Ukraine’s Eurovision 2023 final takes place on 17 December. And today we know which 36 acts are still in the running to make the final of Vidbir 2023.

State broadcaster Suspilne released the long-list of acts earlier today, along with positive words from the show’s musical director Dmytro Shurov (aka Pianoboy).

“I am personally interested in Ukrainian music not freezing, but developing in all directions so that our all possible music niches and styles have their heroes,” he said. “I believe that, in the current time of war and total uncertainty in the lives of musicians, this selection gains special importance: we are not only choosing those who deserve to represent Ukraine at the contest but also have an opportunity to hear a wide range of Ukrainian music that is being composed here and now, no matter what.”

“I am glad that I managed to motivate, inspire, and nudge many musicians to create new songs and interesting ideas during the selection process. It was hard for many of them to start writing again, quite a few musicians are forced migrants or on the edge of changing their profession or even the edge of survival. They are musicians who are volunteering, fighting in the war.”

“Nevertheless, we have the longlist of 36 songs, featuring everything – from songs performed by their authors, dream pop, and rock to indie, rap, and folk. There are certainly a few solid modern smash-hits that can rock any stage. All this shows how creative our nation is, how much we want to produce. I thank the public and Suspilne Ukraine for the trust to produce Vidbir musically. I have been listening to this longlist in my car and hope that, after all the songs are published, you will be as well.”

Long-listed acts will now audition for the show. The list of finalists will be revealed no later than 17 November.

To be selected in December ? Why so early though?

I don’t think it’s the first time Ukraine has selected their entry in December, but I wonder if it’s just to get it out of the way while this war is still going on.

I agree. It’s slightly weird to decide the winner of Eurovision 2023 – in 2022.

There is a clip on youtube where all acts are introduced. I am more than impressed. Wonderful artists. We can expect a lot of quality.

Good luck to all these brave people who worked hard in war conditions to make a song for this competition. Looking forward hearing these songs. Im sure they wont let us down. Ukraine is always up to the task.

I wonder when this list will be cut down To a short list. I wonder if Ukraine or Albania will be the first countries to have their song for 2023.

Don’t they have more serious issues at the moment like a war ? Unless all is not as they try to convince us . A bit sick of them already ….

If we tell the truth, if not for mercy Ukraine would not have won, neither in 2016 nor in 2022..

The majority of participants are very small artists and there are also a couple of artists with zero information available about them online. I guess the standard of Vidbir won’t be as high this year, which is totally expected given the circumstances.

?Ó?K? sound very promising though, they’re like ZalaGasper with electronic beats.

Wiwibloggs, maybe it’s time to try to fix the non-Latin script and emoji issue?

And the thing is, Wiwibloggs is based on WordPress. I do not understand why would they save a few seconds of load at the expense of a stylized text. I just checked on my page, UTF-8 works just fine.

I think this Vidbir should be about small or unknown artists. Since they are already guaranteed a win next year at Eurovision, why not have someone become famous and become a part of the music community? Just like talentless and anonymous Kalush, who got to tour around the US this year – like that would ever happened if they didn’t have a rigged victory.

I just saw. Familiar names include Evi Reci, Rezarta Smaja, Gjergj Kacinari, Manjola Nallbani, Urban Band, Lynx, and Enxhi Nasufi. Considering some of their previous songs, I hope we are in for some gems again. I wonder whether there is again a big name from Albania whom I’ve never heard of before, yet all Albanians will come forward and say that’s the person to beat this time around? If not, I can only speculate that Rezarta and Manjola are both seasoned divas FiK judges can appreciate for their enduring artistry.

I hope they will avoid another drama like the one last year with Alina Pash! I love Ukraine in ESC and I support the country during these terrible times but I will never forget how Ukrainian TV treated Alina. Plus her song was really good and would have been a deserved winner in Turin.

Most of Kalush’s points in Eurovision came from the televote which they also led hands down in the National Selection. Who knows what would have really happened?

Ari

My guess is same amount of televoters plus even more jury support.

Aside from the fact her personal issues would’ve been constant drama and distraction, you think a blatantly political song winning would’ve been less controversial?

I don’t think it would have been less controversial. I just think it would have been more deserved because the song was way better imo.

What’s with the many names written in all caps? Is it a Ukrainian thing? The Bulgarian one from 2021 had it too, I think.

it’s been a worldwide trend in the past few years, lots of streaming era artists have all caps names. see GAYLE, BLACKPINK, KAROL G and so on.

With the thousands of songwriters she employs for each song, you’d think one of them knew how to spell properly.

They won’t. Not with a weak song, which Stefania was most certainly not. We could argue that their 2023 result might be proportionately higher than it would be outside of this unfortunate context, but we are talking in terms of being 4th instead of 9th or 11th instead of 15th, not winning instead of finishing outside of top 15. That simply won’t happen.

Haha, look at local Ukraine defenders. Nice job on boosting those dislikes, as well. Let’s make it seem as no one agrees with Voila monsieur, hahaha!
Meanwhile, in the real world, many of my friends immediately relate Eurovision to politics, and don’t intend to watch it next year. This includes Eurofans as well as “mortals”.
