Back in December Croatia’s HRT revealed that Dora will take place on 11 February 2023. And today the 18 songs from this year’s line-up finally dropped.
The result will be determined by a combination of votes from a professional jury and the Croatian public. But listening to these studio cuts, what do YOU think? Who has the potential to slay in May?
Barbara Munjas “Putem snova”
Boris Štok “Grijeh”
Damir Kedžo “Angels and Demons”
Đana “Free Fallin’”
Detour “Master Blaster”
Eni Jurišić “Kreni dalje”
Hana Mašić “Nesreća”
Harmonija Disonance “Nevera (Lei, lei)”
Krešo & Kisele Kiše “Kme kme”
Let 3 “Mama šč!”
Maja Grgić “I Still Live”
Martha May “Distance”
Meri Andraković “Bye Bye Blonde”
Patricia Gasparini “I Will Wait”
Tajana Belina “Dom”
The Splitters “Lost and Found”
Top of the Pops ft. Mario 5reković “Putovanje”
Yogi “Love at First Sight”
I really believe they should go for Harmonija disonance. I hope their live is really good.
It would be the best choice, of course.
So far is for me the best national final beside Spain . But the songs in croatian language are much stronger than the english ones.
This is the first time that I didn’t like a single song in a countries national selection. That’s just sad.
Ever, Or just this season? I’ve that feeling for a few selections in the past.
Either Barbara Munjas or Harmonija Disonance
Have just listened to Yogi and “Love at First Sight” again. It’s absolutely brilliant! A “visual-poetic” staging and the job is done! Croatia would be mad not to select this one!
Harmonija Disonance “Nevera (Lei lei)” would be my choice.
Let3 all the way for me. Lyrics are briliant.
“Onaj mali psihopat, mali podli psihopat..”-“that little psychopath, little vile psychopath”, i guess it refers on Putin..
Knowing their hilarious outfits and stagings, this would be something very interesing and fresh to see on eurovision stage.
My Top 3 (after 1 x listening)1.Barbara Munjas “Putem snova”2.Damir Kedžo “Angels and Demons”3.Krešo & Kisele Kiše “Kme kme”4.Let 3 “Mama š?!”
Like most people – my favourite is Nevera. The rest is mediocre at best. Though Let 3 could be fun live (depends on staging).
Harmonija Dissonance are probably the only act that would qualify for the final since semis are 100% televote now. Lots of staging opportunities with this track!
I just wish Indira would come back with a banger like You Will Never Break My Heart, it was simply too iconic.
At the very top, Nevera by Harmony Dissonance! The only selfless song that can represent Croatia at the Eurovision!
I really struggle with this year’s Dora. There is nothing here, I instantly love, like “Rijeka” in 2021 or “Moli za nas” last year. I kind of like the vibe of “I still live”, but her accent is very distracting. I think both “Dom” and “Putem Snova” are both okay, but took a wrong turn somewhere. And then there is the ska song. I mean, it’s a ska song like I must have heard it a thousand times before, but it’s nice and energetic. The big favourite seems to be “Nevera”, but I’m sorry, a dance beat isn’t a magic… Read more »
My favorites were Nevera, Free Falling and Angels and Demons. Of those 3, Nevera would be iconic, please Croatia don’t miss this chance out!
Unless the live performances change my mind, “Nevera” it is (I hope there’s nothing absurd about the lyrics!). It’s not as immediate as other folk songs we had recently in Eurovision (I personally prefer when they are mixed with contemporary sounds), but sounds like something that can find an audience. “Mama sc” also stand out to my ears, but it’s something I guess only Georgia would be crazy (in a positive way) enough to send. I would like the input from Colin and other Croatian fans, but I’m under the impression the biggest problem with Dora is the excessive number… Read more »
Hi, Sabrina. I also think that this isn’t the most competitive selection we had (that was likely the last year’s edition), but there’s still good in here. I’ll leave them to marinate for a month, but yeah, many of them aren’t strong enough to qualify or even come close, like Mia and Albina did. I don’t think the problem is too much entries (MGP has 21, and Melfest will have 28), but that some of these feel homemade by enthusiastic people who don’t have an idea of a larger scope of this competition, and some others by skilled people who… Read more »
Thank you so much for the translation, Colin! 🙂 So is the song entirely in Chakavian, or just the title? Do you think there’s some hidden (for a foreigner) meaning behind the lyrics? When I say there’s an excessive amount of the song, it’s because they aren’t finding enough people that understand current Eurovision trends. But I also think the fact it hasn’t semifinals (like Melfest, MGP, Benidorm, Eesti Laul, etc) also plays a part on it, because instantly we start thinking “oh, I’ll have to go through 10 weak tracks to get to the solid ones…”. On the other… Read more »
Nevera is in the standard Croatian. Its title originated in Chakavian, but it’s a word more or less widely spoken throughout the coastline, and everyone knows what it means. The song is about the preserverence of nature as well as one breaking free from the unfaithful relationship. It can puprosefully be taken either way. The lyrics are using standard Croatian, but some expressions are traditional and not used in modern language. For instance ”oh, your tired face” would never be used in direct invocation like it is here. That’s the way things were written in old poems. Adjectives after nouns,… Read more »
Thank you again, Colin. 🙂 So, no problem with the lyrics at all, I can root for them. Let’s see how they’ll do on the stage. One more question: do you think there’s the risk someone wins based on their popularity? Correct me if I’m wrong, but Damir, Albina and Mia were all between the most known participants on their respective years, right?. So I wonder what could happen this time, since the fandom favorites seem to not be popular idols in Croatia. Can Damir end up winning even if nobody seems to be very fond of his song?
Popularity is always a factor, sadly. Dora is not FiK, though. A newcomer could win with the right song. Nevera is already gaining a big buzz, and I’d say they have an solid shot at victory. Damir Kedzo is in a slight advantage, being not only popular, but also a former winner with “a debt over 2020”. Damir isn’t saying that, but other people are. His song is also in top 3 most viewed on YT. Other biggest name are Let3. They’ll certainly get a lot of televote from the previous fanbase, and because of the song being a thinly… Read more »
I wonder if the jury can harm Let 3’s chances. If in the end Croatia sends something that doesn’t stand out, I would prefer Eni to Damir. But let’s see how the live performances will go.
Depending on who’s in the jury, Let 3 might even win the jury vote. There’s a great love for alternative scene and rock scene of this vibe among younger boomers and generation X in Croatia. Younger folks might even join in if the staging is good.
Very good selection. A few songs will be going on my playlist.
But ‘Master Blaster’ with its baseline and melodies/atmosphere like it was taken from my favourite show ‘Wednesday’ won me over.
So here are my opinions on each song: Barbara Munjas – Putem Snova – Instantly captivating, love the vibe and the instrumental. It’s super unique, the kind of song I’ve almost never heard on Eurovision. I like it, but not enough to call a fave Boris Stok – Grijeh – So, a rock ballad. Thr guy has an appropriate voice, the vibe is pretty chill but the song isn’t anything much as a whole. But as someone who enjoys rock ballads – I appreciate it, I honestly don’t dislike it. Also the instrumental is pretty nice. Damir Dekzo – Angels… Read more »
When I first listened to them “meh, nothing special no final”. When I listened to some of them again, I was actually surprised and thought “oh,ok, that’s quite good. Third time, I only listened to Harmonija dissonance. Nevera (Lei Lei) is by far the best song Croatia offered in a looong time! ?
At this point, this are the songs I want to dig into a bit:
Barbara Munjas “Putem snova”Boris Štok “Grijeh”Detour “Master Blaster”Let 3 “Mama š?!”
Wow, I kind of didn’t expect the negativity in the comments section. I liked almost every single one of the songs and I think the key to that is simple – I am from a Balkan country myself. Most of these songs serve Balkan realness and so much nostalgia. Like this is what I used to hear (and still hear actually) on the radio and on the TV whenever I had a national program on or there was a national concert or whatever. I suppose most other people will not get the sentimentality of it all, as they haven’t lived… Read more »
But it’s 2023, how about stop living in the past and start living in the present. Why not have songs that actually sounds like music from today?`None of the songs will get Croatia past semi final
I think you were listening to the wrong national selection. Dora’s 2023 songs are the worst entries I’ve ever heard.
I do like this setting a lot. Well, my knowledge to music theory is very limited (some may prove wrong) but I think these songs have chord progressions and even modes which are typical Eastern Europe. I felt these songs had depth while for example Norwegian setting felt nothing. I also appreciate their organic sound. Trumpet is a nice instrument. Cheers from Finland.
Wer? Qualität und Geschmack bei der Dora? Die sind schon längst über alle Berge, schon seit Jahren, wenn nicht Jahrzehnten!
Harmonija Disonance : I love it !!! Let 3 : its special & crazy but why not (with 100 % televote on the SF, its possible for a qualification of Croatia with this group) but I love it !! Hana Masic : we don’t talk about it much but I think it’s a superb Balkan ballad, I would say it’s a darkhose Eni Jurisic : beautiful ballad and voice Meri Andrakovic : beautiful pop song but not for Eurovision but its cool yeah Dana : beautiful voice, beautiful girl with charisma and like Hana, its a darkhorse Krešo & Kisele… Read more »
Harmonija Disonance is really really good
Yogi’s song is nice, I like the ambience… but the lyrics are very boring. There’s only so much romance I can take. Please write more songs about something else.
Barbara, Boris, Harmonija, Kreso, LET3 and Meri stood out for me on first listen. Lots of quirky entries that I very much appreciate, quite an enjoyable experience, well done Croatia!
Croatia has only 1 option!
Harmonija Disonance “Nevera (Lei, lei)”
It seems like Croatia loves to staying in Semi’s. This selection was even worst than Malta’s one… I am sorry and ready for dislikes. Even Daria’s celebrate from 2011 would be the best song from this selection, i am really Dissapointed.
You may dislike this line-up, but there’s no selection in which Celebrate would be the winner. From 1993 to 2022, that was, hands down our worst, and one of the worst ones ever. A bottom 3 entry in 2011, and that’s saying a lot.
I did not like it either, just said an example – I dont feel this year Croatia as much as i felt 2021/2022 🙁 But it is what it is.
A deserved one!
Impossible to criticize a national selection that offers “Love at first sight”! This is so far above anything else, it’s going straight to the top of my pre-ESC playlist. This could do miracles for Croatia in May. There are some other interesting entries here – I’d single out Maja Grgi? and The Splitters (although i’d prefer their song in Croatian). Competition-wise LET3 has potential too, but I don’t think they could do more than barely qualify. The same goes for “Lei lei”, I find their lyrics equally confusing. All in all, good luck to Croatia, this will be a very… Read more »
Indeed, utmost interesting, I’d say. When you think it cannot go any lower, there is another edition of Dora – the festival of horror.
The miracle will be if Croatia manges to reach final. If they could not reach final with better songs in 2021 and 2022 then they will for sure not reach it with any of these. This selection is so old-fashioned, no one really listens to songs like this any-more
But this year they changed the voiting … Maybe Diaspora will saved them 🙂
Maybe, but not even diaspora listens to songs like that any-more.Diaspora voting only works if you have a good song. And not even then. Look at Albania 2018 and thier great rock entry which televoters ignored completely.
Last couple years DORA was pretty dire, but I actually like quite a few of the songs this year. “Putem Snova” is a bop, and I’m glad to see more stuff in Croatian this year. “Free Fallin” has a cool vibe and nice lyrics. “Master Blaster” is fun and seems like it could have an interesting staging attached. “Nevera” is bringing the folktronicav(a must have of every Eurovision season). I don’t know what’s going on in “Mama Sc” but “Tractor!” made me laugh every time. “Bye Bye Blond” is another bop (with a dash of homoeroticism). This is a greatly… Read more »
Yes, one can always rely on Croatia.NO QUALIFICATION YET AGAIN!
I was listening to the radio while the songs were presented, and it was nice hearing what artists themselves have to say about their songs, as well as what Tomislav Štengl, the HOD, said about the criteria, the ideas for the stage, the future of Dora, the complaints about how songs are picked each year, about how to give platform to everyone, and about in what direction Croatia has to go in Eurovision. I am happy that the songs are already out and that they are presented next to a video. We needed that element. Also, I agree with Štengl… Read more »
As most of this line-up, The Splitters aren’t that well known (and honestly, Kedžo, Let 3, and maybe Eni Jurišic are only ones which could count as household names). They come from Split, the second biggest city, and the center of Dalmatian region. The members are Petar, Josip, Antonio, and Marko. I can’t exactly recall what they said in the transmission, but I can look-up for the radio event again.
I actually like it, too!
Get a lot of Bowie vibes from it and that’s a good thing.
Meri Andrakovic looks like Frances Ruffelle. That is all I have to say for now.
What do you have against Frances Ruffelle to put her down like that?!
Who is the say he’s putting her down? He could be complementing her.
I just think is an insult to compare Frances Ruffelle to… that! Frances is a very beautiful woman.
So is Meri, though.
Didn’t really have any expectations beforehand considering Croatia’s rather poor recent track record, but it was actually a bit of a pleasant surprise. Probably no clear standout entry like Marko Bosnjak’s last year but I didn’t mind at all the ones from Kreso i kisele kise, Barbara Munjas and Tajana Belina (even tho I could do without the few “random” lines in English). Also, bonus points for the fact that about half of the lineup is in your native language as that’s always a plus for me.
I really believe that Krešo & Kisele vode have the best chance for the best success at Eurovision. If the performance is good, the result could be like B&H 2008.
OK I just listened to all of them and I have 3 conclusions: -Probably the last time I bother listening to the Dora songs -Might as well send Let 3. If you’re gonna get eliminated in the semi at least go out in style lol. -If I had to pick a favorite here it would actually be Bye Bye Blonde I think. I think it’s mainly because I like the singer rather than the actual song but yeah I’d pick that one I think. Croatia isn’t likely to do well this year either. Not surprised, not disappointed. I’m expecting Croatia… Read more »
OMG! All the songs are terrible! Another year of not qualifying for the finals… I’m sorry!
I couldn’t agree more.
What a horrendous selection! 🙁 This lineup has nothing to do with a real music scene in Croatia, nor can it represent this wonderful country in a proper manner.
If I were to choose anything from this mess, I’d go for LET 3 or Kreso & Kisele Kise as they will, at least, make a true mockery of the ESC for it has lost its original ESC identity and has become a tasteless mediocre circus.
I don’t know why people complain about Damir, I like this song. It gives me Imagine Dragons vibe and I love them ?
If he sent balkan ballad, everyone would be complaining “oh, boring ballads” (btw I adored Divlji Vjetre and still do!) and now when he has a good and catchy dance song, it’s not good enough again ????
You people are so demanding!
If he had actually sent a good catchy song, no one would say anything against him. Unfortunately, his song is a poor try to imitate a quite popular American pop sound. Wish him all the best, but better luck next time (in advance)
Don’t insult Imagine Dragons please
“Imagine Dragons” is an insult by itself!
The Splitters for me “lost and found” is an earwurm and brings back the 70ties sound.
Yogi “Love at First Sight” – HURRAH!!! REFRESHINGLY DIFFERENT EURO-SONGMaja Grgi? “I Still Live” PURE AND MELODICThe Splitters “Lost and Found” NICE TUNE – LYRICS? Hm … somewhat dodgyGreat entries! Some of the best overall so far!
Interesting, we have the same top 3 out of 18, quite a coincidence!
Hurrah! Thought I was out of step with all the Eurovison fans (I usually am).
So far from what I have heard Harmonija disonance – Nevera (Lei, lei), Hana Maši? – Nesre?a and Eni Juriši? – Kreni dalje have potential and I have to confess I have 2 guilty pleasure songs which are Meri Andrakovic – Bye Bye Blonde and especially Top of the Pop ft. Mario 5rekovi? – Putovanje
I really like Harmonia Dissonance and Kreso I Kisele Kiss and Let3. I actually kind want Let3 to win just so”TRAKTOR!” csn become a Eurovision meme XD. I also don’t mind Boris Stok or Damir
Harmonija Disonance – Nevera LEI LEI
What an electro ethnic bop!
They deserve to go to Liverpool!
Just found out Croatians hate it because of the lyrics. I don’t think it’s going to Liverpool…
What’s the problem with the lyrics? Are they offensive or just plain bad?
Ofcourse lyrics are not offensive! According to initial reaction from croatian public, it will be fight between Harmonija Disonance and LET3 for ticket to Liverpool.
I personaly think that stage perfornance on Dora will decide!
These two are my favourites. I also like Master Blaster
They are just a bunch of nonsense.
Not quite true. Croatians hate all Dora songs.
Well I can already see I will be supporting Mama Š?. What a song!
I really want it to win so we can turn “TRAKTOR!” into a meme XD
I only listened to a recap video of the songs and already I don’t think Croatia has anything that can get it out of its non-qualification slump. I listen to the songs in full eventually to see if I can pick out some thing that I like, but I have a feeling I’m not gonna have a lot of Croatian songs in my eurovision national final playlist.
Honestly just wait for the winner of the competition. There really isn’t anything great.
I still want to be fair and give the songs a shot, but honestly I don’t know who to root for. They just don’t inspire me.
You don’t need to root for anyone in every national final. Only root for an entry you truly care for if it goes to ESC.
Croats didn’t send Rijeka, but they would send Nevera. They really don’t know how to choose entry for Eurovision.
What’s to choose from?! A disgusting input gives a disgusting output.
Very disappointing selection. Harmonija Disonance has some potential, but I don’t like the song. I understand Croatian and the song is just no from me.
What’s wrong with the lyrics?
There is nothing wrong, it’s just not for me.
“Tell me oh my mother who were those who were fighting” or “Oh Neretva river forget the sea, so that your heart stays in place” (Neretva river enters Adriatic Sea)
The lyrics is fine, it’s just not my cup of tea as it’s too traditional to me. Personally liked Rijeka much more.
As already said, they are just nonsense.
Agree with you. I too understand the lyrics and I have origins from Bosnia and I do not like this much traditional. For me it is to peasantry,to much country side. Sort of like dansband here in Sweden. Shame that people only want that type of songs from our countries, as if that is the only thing we have to offer music wise. No one really listen to that type any more and radios will not play it. I feel like people do not know or care that we have modern music to, just like other countries. I want that… Read more »
I am from Bosnia and Herzegovina too.
Hehe, sta ima?
Though I live in Sweden…
Haha I would disagree with you. That is some decent electro folk, and with some revamp will have a great potential. There are many that enjoy that Slavic sound, just look at the success of Go_A in 2021. I know many that prefer that sound over generic house music. In comparison to other songs in Dora this year, Nevera is the only one with potential to go to finals I’d say.
Greetings from Östergötland!
Harmonija Disonance “Nevera (Lei, lei)”. Send this. Everything else is trash.
I think that’s also the only song that intrigues me. However, that’s not saying much.
Yeah… it’s not great, but at least it stands out
Including that one stated. All are trash!
?ana – Free Fallin’ – already on repeat 🙂
I like these songs most:
Boris Štok “Grijeh”Eni Juriši? “Kreni dalje”Harmonija Disonance “Nevera (Lei, lei)”
Let 3 or Harmonija Disonance.
It’s like choosing between the plague and cholera.
