Back in December Croatia’s HRT revealed that Dora will take place on 11 February 2023. And today the 18 songs from this year’s line-up finally dropped.

The result will be determined by a combination of votes from a professional jury and the Croatian public. But listening to these studio cuts, what do YOU think? Who has the potential to slay in May?

Barbara Munjas “Putem snova”

Boris Štok “Grijeh”

Damir Kedžo “Angels and Demons”

Đana “Free Fallin’”

Detour “Master Blaster”

Eni Jurišić “Kreni dalje”

Hana Mašić “Nesreća”

Harmonija Disonance “Nevera (Lei, lei)”

Krešo & Kisele Kiše “Kme kme”

Let 3 “Mama šč!”

Maja Grgić “I Still Live”

Martha May “Distance”

Meri Andraković “Bye Bye Blonde”

Patricia Gasparini “I Will Wait”

Tajana Belina “Dom”

The Splitters “Lost and Found”

Top of the Pops ft. Mario 5reković “Putovanje”

Let3 all the way for me. Lyrics are briliant.
“Onaj mali psihopat, mali podli psihopat..”-“that little psychopath, little vile psychopath”, i guess it refers on Putin..
Knowing their hilarious outfits and stagings, this would be something very interesing and fresh to see on eurovision stage.

Harmonija Dissonance are probably the only act that would qualify for the final since semis are 100% televote now. Lots of staging opportunities with this track!

I just wish Indira would come back with a banger like You Will Never Break My Heart, it was simply too iconic.

I really struggle with this year’s Dora. There is nothing here, I instantly love, like “Rijeka” in 2021 or “Moli za nas” last year. I kind of like the vibe of “I still live”, but her accent is very distracting. I think both “Dom” and “Putem Snova” are both okay, but took a wrong turn somewhere. And then there is the ska song. I mean, it’s a ska song like I must have heard it a thousand times before, but it’s nice and energetic. The big favourite seems to be “Nevera”, but I’m sorry, a dance beat isn’t a magic… Read more »

Unless the live performances change my mind, “Nevera” it is (I hope there’s nothing absurd about the lyrics!). It’s not as immediate as other folk songs we had recently in Eurovision (I personally prefer when they are mixed with contemporary sounds), but sounds like something that can find an audience. “Mama sc” also stand out to my ears, but it’s something I guess only Georgia would be crazy (in a positive way) enough to send. I would like the input from Colin and other Croatian fans, but I’m under the impression the biggest problem with Dora is the excessive number… Read more »

Hi, Sabrina. I also think that this isn’t the most competitive selection we had (that was likely the last year’s edition), but there’s still good in here. I’ll leave them to marinate for a month, but yeah, many of them aren’t strong enough to qualify or even come close, like Mia and Albina did. I don’t think the problem is too much entries (MGP has 21, and Melfest will have 28), but that some of these feel homemade by enthusiastic people who don’t have an idea of a larger scope of this competition, and some others by skilled people who… Read more »

Thank you so much for the translation, Colin! 🙂 So is the song entirely in Chakavian, or just the title? Do you think there’s some hidden (for a foreigner) meaning behind the lyrics? When I say there’s an excessive amount of the song, it’s because they aren’t finding enough people that understand current Eurovision trends. But I also think the fact it hasn’t semifinals (like Melfest, MGP, Benidorm, Eesti Laul, etc) also plays a part on it, because instantly we start thinking “oh, I’ll have to go through 10 weak tracks to get to the solid ones…”. On the other… Read more »

Nevera is in the standard Croatian. Its title originated in Chakavian, but it’s a word more or less widely spoken throughout the coastline, and everyone knows what it means. The song is about the preserverence of nature as well as one breaking free from the unfaithful relationship. It can puprosefully be taken either way. The lyrics are using standard Croatian, but some expressions are traditional and not used in modern language. For instance ”oh, your tired face” would never be used in direct invocation like it is here. That’s the way things were written in old poems. Adjectives after nouns,… Read more »

Thank you again, Colin. 🙂 So, no problem with the lyrics at all, I can root for them. Let’s see how they’ll do on the stage. One more question: do you think there’s the risk someone wins based on their popularity? Correct me if I’m wrong, but Damir, Albina and Mia were all between the most known participants on their respective years, right?. So I wonder what could happen this time, since the fandom favorites seem to not be popular idols in Croatia. Can Damir end up winning even if nobody seems to be very fond of his song?

Colin

Popularity is always a factor, sadly. Dora is not FiK, though. A newcomer could win with the right song. Nevera is already gaining a big buzz, and I’d say they have an solid shot at victory. Damir Kedzo is in a slight advantage, being not only popular, but also a former winner with “a debt over 2020”. Damir isn’t saying that, but other people are. His song is also in top 3 most viewed on YT. Other biggest name are Let3. They’ll certainly get a lot of televote from the previous fanbase, and because of the song being a thinly… Read more »

Depending on who’s in the jury, Let 3 might even win the jury vote. There’s a great love for alternative scene and rock scene of this vibe among younger boomers and generation X in Croatia. Younger folks might even join in if the staging is good.

So here are my opinions on each song: Barbara Munjas – Putem Snova – Instantly captivating, love the vibe and the instrumental. It’s super unique, the kind of song I’ve almost never heard on Eurovision. I like it, but not enough to call a fave Boris Stok – Grijeh – So, a rock ballad. Thr guy has an appropriate voice, the vibe is pretty chill but the song isn’t anything much as a whole. But as someone who enjoys rock ballads – I appreciate it, I honestly don’t dislike it. Also the instrumental is pretty nice. Damir Dekzo – Angels… Read more »

Wow, I kind of didn’t expect the negativity in the comments section. I liked almost every single one of the songs and I think the key to that is simple – I am from a Balkan country myself. Most of these songs serve Balkan realness and so much nostalgia. Like this is what I used to hear (and still hear actually) on the radio and on the TV whenever I had a national program on or there was a national concert or whatever. I suppose most other people will not get the sentimentality of it all, as they haven’t lived… Read more »

I do like this setting a lot. Well, my knowledge to music theory is very limited (some may prove wrong) but I think these songs have chord progressions and even modes which are typical Eastern Europe. I felt these songs had depth while for example Norwegian setting felt nothing. I also appreciate their organic sound. Trumpet is a nice instrument. Cheers from Finland.

Impossible to criticize a national selection that offers “Love at first sight”! This is so far above anything else, it’s going straight to the top of my pre-ESC playlist. This could do miracles for Croatia in May. There are some other interesting entries here – I’d single out Maja Grgi? and The Splitters (although i’d prefer their song in Croatian). Last couple years DORA was pretty dire, but I actually like quite a few of the songs this year. “Putem Snova” is a bop, and I’m glad to see more stuff in Croatian this year. “Free Fallin” has a cool vibe and nice lyrics. “Master Blaster” is fun and seems like it could have an interesting staging attached. “Nevera” is bringing the folktronicav(a must have of every Eurovision season). I was listening to the radio while the songs were presented, and it was nice hearing what artists themselves have to say about their songs, as well as what Tomislav Štengl, the HOD, said about the criteria, the ideas for the stage, the future of Dora, the complaints about how songs are picked each year, about how to give platform to everyone, and about in what direction Croatia has to go in Eurovision. As most of this line-up, The Splitters aren’t that well known (and honestly, Kedžo, Let 3, and maybe Eni Jurišic are only ones which could count as household names). They come from Split, the second biggest city, and the center of Dalmatian region. The members are Petar, Josip, Antonio, and Marko. Didn’t really have any expectations beforehand considering Croatia’s rather poor recent track record, but it was actually a bit of a pleasant surprise. Probably no clear standout entry like Marko Bosnjak’s last year but I didn’t mind at all the ones from Kreso i kisele kise, Barbara Munjas and Tajana Belina (even tho I could do without the few “random” lines in English). Also, bonus points for the fact that about half of the lineup is in your native language as that’s always a plus for me.

There are many that enjoy that Slavic sound, just look at the success of Go_A in 2021. I know many that prefer that sound over generic house music.
