New music this week: Songs from Måneskin, Noa Kirel, Malik Harris and more

The Eurovision 2023 season is beginning to heat up. Over the course of the next few months, we will all fall in and out of love with scores of new national final and Eurovision entries. But that doesn’t mean we forget about the artists from past contests.

Contrary to the commonly perpetuated myth about the song contest killing careers, we’re always thrilled to report that singers associated with Eurovision are thriving.

Here is our latest weekly roundup with a selection of the songs and music videos released recently by Eurovision stars.

New music from Eurovision artists: 2023 | Week 2

Måneskin feat. Tom Morello – “GOSSIP”

Only one week to go until Måneskin’s new album drops. But before that, the Italian band have treated us to one final pre-release single. “GOSSIP” takes the Eurovision 2021 champions’ glam rock style and adds in the expertise of American guitarist Tom Morello, who is a member of Rage Against the Machine. Damiano, having recently shaved his hair, sings of the façade that celebrities put up to try and hide their faults and problems. But the tea can often be spilt, to reveal they are just like everyone else: “Sip the gossip, drink ’til you choke / Sip the gossip, burn down your throat / You’re not iconic, you are just like them all / Don’t act like you don’t know, oh”.

Jérémie Makiese – “OASIS”

Jérémie Makiese has officially handed over the Belgian Eurovision baton to Gustaph. But just before he did, the 2022 contestant released his follow-up single “OASIS”. It’s another track with R&B influences that Jérémie adds a bit of swagger to. He sings to a person who he hopes to get up close and personal with: “Come on and bring your body closer to me / I’ll show you loving the way it should be / Oh, I don’t care what they say about us / When they go ‘ooh la la’, I say ‘ooh la la'”. Since the music video ends with a “To be continued” note, hopefully we won’t have to wait as long for Jérémie’s next single.

Poli Genova – “Help Me Out”

“Can you be my guide? / When the storm arrives, ooh / Will you hold me tight? […] You gotta, gotta help me out / Help me out whoooh / Lead me to the promised land”. The promised land according to Poli Genova’s new music video for “Help Me Out” is Antalya, Turkey. Bulgaria’s two-time Eurovision star transports us to the resort as she sings about the support she wishes to receive from her loved one. On social media, Poli discussed the emotive feelings she hopes listeners will get from the song:

“It has a special energy and emotion that makes you rediscover yourself and your inner world. The slow and melodic EDM style, touches and waves as the lyrics of the track itself. I believe that you will be able to immerse yourself in the beautiful music and in combination with the wonderful landscape footage of the video, you will be be able to relax and be transported to a dreamy place.”

Noa Kirel – “Gone”

Noa Kirel is busy selecting her song for Eurovision 2023. But that isn’t stopping her from releasing even more new music for us all. The Israeli star’s new single “Gone” sees her returning to English. Kirel sings about the relief she has following a breakup and the fact she won’t have to deal with that person anymore: “Now I used to pray / Pray you would stay / Stay for so long / Boy I was wrong / Now my favourite thing about you is you’re gone”. Musically, “Gone” is a radio-friendly pop track with just a sprinkling of Israeli instrumentation to add an extra punch in the post-chorus.

Sakis Rouvas & Konstantinos Argiros – “SoK”

Two-time Eurovision star Sakis Rouvas appeared alongside Konstantinos Argiros at MadWalk 2022, where they debuted the new song “SoK” (“Shock”). The single has now had its official release on streaming platforms. A driving punk-pop track, the two Greek stars sing “Shock, we’ve had it / Shock, we’re losing our minds / But in the end we / We will drive them crazy”.

Adam Mišík feat. Ben Cristovao – “ZAPOMENOUT”

Czech singer Adam Mišík has brought Eurovision 2021 star Ben Cristovao onboard for the new single “ZAPOMENOUT” (“FORGET”). Cristovao contributes the second verse to the pop-rock track. The lyrics see the pair finding it hard to erase an ex-partner from their minds: “You can’t be forgotten / When you look into my eyes now I know / I will come back to you / Until the end of days / Until dawn, you can’t be forgotten”.

It’s been a busy start to 2023 for Ben Cristovao. He’s also recently shared the hip hop song “Happy Birthday” with Majk Spirit. In addition, Ben has uploaded a music video for “NEVINNÝ” with EGO, which was part of his 2022 album PROTENKONTRAST — though the video was apparently filmed all the way back in 2016.

Malik Harris – “Dreamer”

“Try to break your back all you want / Oh I can face this alone / I’m not afraid to be a dreamer”. Malik Harris is here to encourage us to chase after our dreams even if other people think it’s not worth it. Germany’s Eurovision 2022 act once again combines a sung chorus with rap verses, but this new single has more grit compared to his entry for the contest. The music video also takes a slightly raw approach to what challenges people might have to face during their lives. In a long post on social media, Malik went into more detail about the song:

“My new single DREAMER is about not letting anyone or anything get between you and your dreams, whether it’s your own anxieties, people around you or any forms of doubts coming from both inside and out. […] I think this world needs more dreamers. More people who are not afraid of holding on to their dreams. More people who will do whatever it takes to achieve their goals, no matter how often they’re faced with adversity, mockery or uncertainty.”

Chanel & RIDSA – “TOKE (Si t’es ok)”

Spain’s Eurovision 2022 bronze medallist Chanel first released “TOKE” as the anthem for RTVE’s coverage of last year’s football World Cup. Now the song is reaching even more international audiences thanks to a new version that features French rapper RIDSA. He enters for the second verse to turn it into the bilingual offering “Si t’es ok” (“If you’re ok”).

Edsilia Rombley – In Balans

After releasing a plethora of singles over the past few years, Edsilia Rombley has now brought them together into the new album In Balans (In Balance). The 13 songs include previous hits “Rustpunt”, “Goed Voor Mij” and “Soulmate”. But, there are also some brand new tracks as well, such as the catchy “We Zijn Al Daar” (“We’re Already There”). Overall, there’s a mixture of genres to delve into — from 80’s pop, to piano ballads, to soul.

Dmitry Koldun – “Заметает”

Belarussian singer Dmitry Koldun has released “Заметает” (“Sweeping”). The Eurovision 2007 act starts with wintry chimes but the song gradually builds with the addition of extra percussion, including drums and electric guitar.

Voltaj – “Esecul va da gres”

The new Romanian film Hai hui în timp (Come on time) was released at the end of 2022. Eurovision 2015 band Voltaj featured on the soundtrack and they have now released the song they recorded for the movie. “Esecul va da gres” (“Failure will fail”) is a soft rock track about perseverance: “When I feel like leaves are falling from my tree again / When I feel bad luck, I am bound faithfully / I tell myself this, one day failure will fail / I look in the mirror and tell myself, come on, I can”. Voltaj discussed the song’s message further on Instagram:

“In life do not allow yourself to be defeated by failures. You need to move forward and follow your dreams. Even if sometimes the hardships drag you down, you must trust that things will change, you can’t give up.”

Isaura – “Glória”

“I made this song for my mum but who knows, there’s a little bit of you in it too”. Portugal’s Isaura isn’t waiting until Mother’s Day in order to celebrate the person who has guided her through life. The Eurovision 2018 participant gifts her mum a loving indie pop single. She sings of the help and advice that her mother has provided her: “In the kitchen your laughter / I discover other trips / The phone rings / You claim to be telepathic / Listen to your voice / Let me know where I was going / Ia ia, ia ia, Glória ia, uh uh”.

SENNEK – “Rise like a phoenix”

Having not released any singles in 2022, SENNEK is rising from the musical ashes for 2023. She has revealed she’ll soon be dropping a Eurovision Unplugged EP following her mini tour. The Belgian singer is teasing the project by releasing her first cover from the upcoming record. Looking back four years before her own participation, the Eurovision 2018 star has taken on Conchita Wurst’s winning entry “Rise like a phoenix”. It’s an unplugged EP, so SENNEK pares things back a bit; stripping out the strings, she is instead accompanied by piano and drums.

Mēs Jūs Mīlam – “Meet The Boyz”

You’ll remember Mēs Jūs Mīlam from Latvia’s Supernova 2022. The duo, which includes Eurovision 2013 participant Ralfs Eilands, had hoped to make a return to the national final in 2023, but their song “Meet The Boyz” was not chosen to progress to the live shows. Nevertheless, they’ve decided to release the song for us anyway. A thumping techno track, it features vocals from Zelma Jegere: “Meet the boyz / And bring out all your toys / You love that noise, noise, noise / So just switch it on and move your body”.

Kalush Orchestra – “Shchedryi Vechir”
