Following the grand reveal of the seven acts competing in Finland’s Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu (UMK) 2023, Finnish broadcaster Yle has been dropping the lyric videos for each entry one by one. And on Friday at midnight Finland time we finally reach the end of the line with the Portion Boys and their song “Samaa taivasta katsotaan.”
With a career spanning more than a decade, party band Portion Boys are one of the most listened-to bands in Finland. Their 2021 megahit “Vauhti kiihtyy” brought the group to a whole new level, making them a household name.
Portion Boys consists of Kenraali Vahva, El Meissel, A.P. Vuori, JaloTiina and Taitelija Nieminen. The group created their name as a reference to Swedish foods.
The UMK jury describes “Samaa taivasta katsotaan” as an “unforgettable earworm, positively brimming with laser drums, energy and musical hooks”.

The winner will be chosen jointly by Finnish television viewers and international juries. The public will account for 75% of the vote and the juries for the remaining 25%. The finalists were chosen from 362 applicants by a jury of music industry professionals led by Tapio Hakanen, YleX’s Head of Music.
What do you make of “Samaa taivasta katsotaan”? Do you think Portion Boys can win UMK 2023 and represent Finland at Eurovision? Let us know in the comments below!
I don’t think I’m too camp to say that this is amazingly good and addictive, just because people have other preferences on the winner doesn’t dismantle the fact that there’s not a single bad song here! All songs will be probably my most played songs by the end of this year.
cha cha cha rulez!
🙂
This was big let down for me
I like this song very much !!
Listen to the lyrics – It sounds like these people have lived under a rock their whole life – and now finally learning about the mystic “Europe”.
Okay, Brits drink tea, Italy has good pizza and Iceland got hot springs. But its like singing “1+2=3” and “the hand has 5 fingers”.
As a Finnish person this is absolute NO for me. Finnhits with slight electric guitar and “Heavy metal” ish scream. This bows in so many directions, it looses its identity. This whole song seems to be thoroughly calculated, trying to fish votes from those who like metal, and from those specific countries mentioned. We are better than this.
It’s probably my least favourite of the bunch even though it’s not that bad, if you leave the subtitles off.
It’s a nice song but there is a problem, not all the participating countries are mentioned in it, but only specific European countries. This thing can mean that other countries that were not mentioned in the song simply will not vote for it, these countries will be hurt that they were not mentioned, and rightly so!
I cannot possibly comment on something so ridiculous. So, this comment does not exist; it’s just in your imagination; it never happened.
Yet you’re posting your sh*t here
It’s not real. It’s imaginary.
Camp in a good way and enjoyable part of this selection, but most likely not a winner. Hit for the homemarket, which is good too.
It’s so bad that it’s good, I enjoyed listening to it! XD
This is a definite NO from me, especially considering the strength of the competition.
Reminds me of that pirate song from years ago. For me the weakest of the selection but for any other country this would stand out in theirs. UMK have done themselves proud this year. The winner is now down to stage interpretation i think. Well done the selection team and good luck to all the performers
This song does give me Iron Maiden vibes with more of a pop sound. I totally think it’s a fun song and it probably do well in the televote at UMK. Although I have to say I think a few other songs in UMK would do better at Eurovision.
This is so stupid, I absolutely love it. I can’t wait to see it on stage.
Other countries like Sweden should follow the example of Finland and focus on quality not quantity.
Why Sweden?
The answer is so obvious that your question offends
But not only Sweden – how about with Cyprus and Azerbaijan ?
Cyprus and Azerbaijan do not have a national final.
UMK incredibly strong this year, I think Käärijä is the stand out but Benjamin, Portion Boys and Keira all have a chance.
Robin is dull, Kuumaa is forgettable and I fear Lxandra will just get lost in the shuffle, especially with the televote having such power in the decision making.
This is not meant to be a slight on this song, but this reminds me of Dustin the Turkey…
It reminds me of Wolves of the sea.
Sústom slayed at least
What a sélection !
The only song i do not Vibe at all with is Robin’s. But it aint Bad
I Hope for benjamin or chachacha but I think Finland Can qualify with the 7 songs, though some will have it easier than others
Wow, this is just great
Ok Finland is very good & strong this year OMGGGGGG
For me Kaarija or Benjamin but I prefer the first !
I love also Lxandra, Keira & Portion Boys
The rest NO ! (Please Finnish People, no Robin because he’s famous !!!!) it’s a contest with the BEST SONG not for the BEST Popular !!!
It won’t win, but it’s hilarious and owns its schlager-eyness XD
Is it just me or is the drum track of this almost identical to Kaarija? I’d love for someone more clever than me to merge the tracks, I think they are practically identical.
This has much more 80s rolls, at least to my ears.
Yes, the rolls. I was referring to the core best, I would suggest they are the same.
*beat
Ok so this is by far the strongest selection we have this year and it will be a blood bath in February. Well done to Finalnd , other countries can learn from this. And yes Kaarja for the win!!!!
I can now positively say that I don’t hate any of this year’s UMK entries, but the Portion Boys don’t make the top of my list. The song is catchy, but in a rather calculated way, musically there’s not much to discover. Lyrically, let’s say, it helps that I don’t speak Finnish, yet.
To sum UMK-week up, there are four songs out of these seven, I would be at least happy, if not downright thrilled to see at Eurovision – if the live versions live up to the studio cut, of course. Unfortunately, only one of them can go.
Lol I don’t eat Kukkoa Viinissä everyday but ty for the ref! Enjoyable and catchy song, they seem to have fun all together and seem to be fun too, there’s nothing to dislike here, good luck to them.
This will definitely do well in televoting as it’s anthemic and Partial Boys have a fanbase regardless the cringe lyrics, but I respect that the song is in native language even if they sing about other countries, which still makes the song less cringe obviously.
I feel like this song tries to hard to be a Eurovision song. Mentioning other countries and what they’re famous for, it’s like a call for voting.
That said, it’s still a fun song. I wouldn’t put it on my playlist, but it did make me smile with mentioning Kimi Räikkönen, in the chorus no less! If they wanted to shine a light on the things people think about the Finns, I guess they did it, but the melody of the song is still very basic, almost like a JESC entry.
I absoloutely enjoyed it. Can’t help.
Was like an Nordic schlager rock. Very anthemic and catchy.
Only Nordics can do it
Wow, Finland has really come to par-tay this year!
There is going to be one helluva dance off in February.
I must say that Finland has done a great job, the marketing has been top notch and they’ve given their artists the best possible platform!
This was a cringefesf. I just can’t with those lyrics. The only bad song this year. Käärijä to Liverpool.
Yeah, but deliberately so… right?
This is by far my least favorite UMK entry
I still think it’s the best selection, but I just didn’t connect with this, I guess
The Finnish audience might vote for this but if this were to go to Eurovision, I don’t think it would qualify
I want Benjamin or Käärijä to win, good luck to all artists, I’m sure this show will be a blast
It would qualify
A bit too cliche for me. It does sound exactly like smth you’d see on eurovision, but maybe in the 2010s and not now and definitely not from UMK. Overall – not bad but for me personally it is at the bottom of my list with Robin. However, I am very glad all the songs are now out. If we are talking about personal favorites – my absolute favorite has not budged and it’s Hoida Mut. However, Cha Cha Cha has slowly been going up in my list and I have to admit when it comes to chances in Eurovision… Read more »
A question for Finnish people: Who do you think will win?
Käärijä is the clear fan favourite by a great margin. Benjamin might just be the only other act to stand a chance. Robin’s got the biggest fanbase so it could be a threat, but I just can’t see him getting THAT much support with THAT song.
I’m surprised Keira isn’t more popular among Finnish people. I hope Käärijä wins February 25th.
NO ROBIN PLEASE ! NO MISTAKE FINNISH PEOPLE
Well as a Finn I would say Käärijä is the most likely to win . Kuumaa is going to explode radiocharts, like BESS did last year. It is way too early to say, live performances can change everything. Strong selection overall. We have done huge mistakes with our voting earlier years, but I dont think that Robin has any chance this year. Portion boys is my favourite party band, but this song is….well, you all see the lyrics, my mom loves it tough 😀 it is going to be bloodpath for sure.
What it’s trying to do, it does well… but sorry, not for me.
