Fusa Nocta

The Spanish race to Eurovision continues. Next up, we’re taking a look at Fusa Nocta’s entry for Benidorm Fest 2023. “Mi Familia” is a love letter to her family, from which she has been separated ever since she went to pursue her music career in Madrid.

Fusa Nocta says her staging will also be a tribute to her chosen family.

Benidorm Fest 2023: Fusa Nocta “Mi Familia”

Fusa Nocta — real name Mirian Nares — burst onto the Spanish trap scene after finding fame on season three of The X Factor. Now, she’s departing slightly from her typical urban style. Fusa Nocta’s Benidorm Fest track “Mi Familia” uses traditional flamenco elements, such as clapping and guitars.

There’s also a voice note from her little cousin, who’s credited in the lyrics. “Miri, I really liked your video. I hope you come someday or that we’ll go visit you some time. Kisses”. The whole family is represented in the track – her grandma also gets a shoutout. “My grandma told me: Girl, always go first”. Despite being apart, her family will be very close in Benidorm.

Fusa Nocta hails from Gandia, which is less than one hour from the host venue.

What do the “Mi Familia” lyrics mean?

The “Mi Familia” lyrics see Fusa Nocta reflect on her relationship with her family. “My family is first”, she says. “My grandma once told me: look well into the mirror and look at yourself with pride”. She also refers to her parents: “Pride be with my parents, let them brag about their child”.

But don’t take these lyrics as cocky. The song is all about how Fusa’s family helped lift her up during her lowest moments. “I have my fears, they want me to touch the sky but I’m about to hit the ground”. “When they think about me, I want it all to be nice things. This world has them worried, and with good reason”.

Spanish text

Miri, me ha gustado un montón tu video
Espero que vengas un día
o que nosotros vayamos a verte
Un besito

Mi familia
Mi familia lo primero
Es que yo tengo mis miedos
Que me quieran tocar cielo
Y yo voy a tocar suelo, tocar suelo, tocar suelo

Mi abuela un día me dijo
Mírate bien al espejo
Y mírate con orgullo
mírate mírate
Que me duele la carita
De lo guapa que la tengo
Me ha dicho mi abuelita
Nena tú siempre primero

Mi familia lo primero
Es que yo tengo mis miedos
Que me quieran tocar cielo
Y yo voy a tocar suelo tocar suelo tocar suelo tocar suelo tocar suelo

Pa mis padres ser orgullo
que presuman de lo suyo
Y cuando piensen en mí que sea todo bueno, todo bueno
Este mundo yo sé que les quita el sueño y no es pa menos

Yo nunca estoy sola

Mi familia es lo primero
Es que yo tengo mis miedos
Que me quieran tocar cielo
Y yo voy a tocar suelo tocar suelo tocar suelo tocar suelo tocar suelo

English translation

Miri, I really liked your video
I hope you come see us some time
or that we go visit you once
Kisses

My family
My family is first
You know, I have many fears
They want me to touch the sky
And I’m about to hit the ground, hit the ground, hit the ground

My grandma once told me
Look well into the mirror
And look at yourself with pride
look at you, look at you
That even my face is hurting
Because it is so beautiful
My nanny told me
Girl, you always go first

My family is first
You know, I have many fears
They want me to touch the sky
And I’m about to hit the ground, hit the ground, hit the ground

Pride be with my parents
Let them brag about what they have
And when they think of me, may everything be good, be good
I know this world makes them lose sleep and it’s no wonder why

I’m never alone

My family is first
You know, I have many fears
They want me to touch the sky
And I’m about to hit the ground, hit the ground, hit the ground

My grandma once told me
Look well into the mirror
And look at yourself with pride
look at you, look at you
That even my face is hurting
Because it is so beautiful
My nanny told me
Girl, you always go first

As long as they know who I am, who I am
I’ll never fall, their hands are holding me, ay, ay, ay
May they look into my eyes and have faith
As much as I misbehave may they always know, I’m under their skin

Miri, I love you

I’m really sorry but I just find this song super messy, all over the place and goes nowhere. I don’t really get the hype, I just don’t think this is the song for Spain.
I know this song if the fan favorite for now but I know Spain can do a lot better than this.
Again, I’m really sorry .

This is one of my favorites. I like how it combines modern sound (that even sounds rebellious at times) with some more traditional values in the lyrics. She can be young and modern without abandoning her roots. She can sign about loved ones giving her strength and support, without it being cheesy.

Not sure about it lyrically, but I AM a fan of the lyrics, which remind me of Albania’s entry this year!
