Last year they didn’t give viewers the variety it takes for an exciting national final. Now, in 2023, Germany‘s broadcaster NDR wants to do better. But will the acts and songs at their national selection Unser Lied für Liverpool actually make an impact? It seems like they will…if you can trust the older generation in Germany.

This week website Eurovision.de has been posting a series of videos. They show NDR’s social media face Broder sitting together with his “besties”. These are people from the older generation reacting to the songs competing in Unser Lied für Liverpool — and maybe the TikTok wildcard competition. While the acts will not be revealed until tomorrow, the reaction videos already give us some hints.

So let’s take a closer look at the comments from the senior citizens – and Broder. You can watch all clips on TikTok and Instagram but they also got uploaded on YouTube:

So of course there’s a lot going on here. Whilst many comments are about the looks of the selected acts, they also talk about the music itself. So we decided to investigate in those two categories seperately.

Hints about the look

Since there is a lot of talk about rock music and music “you need to listen to on a high volume” we can definitely expect a variety of genres. At one point Broder says, “Now it’s raining blood.” We can definitely imagine Lord of the Lost being part of Unser Lied für Liverpool. German media already expect them to be in the race with the song “Blood & Glitter”. Other comments like “this is very loud and very glittery” fit this guess perfectly.

Another noticeable detail they talk about multiple times is a guy with long hair. Another comment is that “he reminds me of Jesus”. Combined with some comments about an emotional, romantic song we can’t help but think about Will Church. He openly talked about applying for the German selection and could also be part of the TikTok round.

An interesting comment comes from one of the senior ladies. She says that “all of them look like they are size 38.” This is a German dress size for slim people. She also adds that no one of those look like (for example) Maite Kelly, who is a very popular Irish-German singer known for being very self-confident about her female curves. This could actually lead to singer Betül, who is dancing with her backing dancers in her music video to “Heaven”. There are also comments about an oriental-inspired song, which would fit perfectly.

The female seniors are especially impressed by one of the contender’s looks. There are comments about a man looking sensual and being very good-looking. We can’t help but think of singer Jona while hearing those comments. He also applied for the TikTok wildcard-selection with his song “10/10”. Especially because one lady says “the older generation [in Germany] could like it because they’ll understand the lyrics”, which obviously hints a song in German. BUT since Jona also released his song in English, these comments could also lead to singers Florian Künstler and Senta, both of whom sing in German and have uploaded clips on TikTok with the Hashtag #UnserLiedFürLiverpool.

Another interesting act could be the one they talk about in part 2. Comments like “she’s got a great outfit” and a number that can be played at the club or in a bar could refer to a dance song. “You can dance in your apartment to this song while cleaning.” one lady says. Maybe the act behind those comments could be Freak Nation.

Hints about the music itself

Another aspect are hints about the musical genres. The seniors talk about a song which could entertain children, saying “The singer just needs to add a clown’s nose and it would be perfect for children.” Combined with comments about a male version of Schlager-star Andrea Berg, this could lead to Ikke Hüftgold. Of course he is known for his party-music but it’s often compared to German Schlager-songs also.

There is also a lot of talk about “something like Celtic music” and an instrument they don’t immediately recognize. Broder also talks about a female singer looking like Dotter from Sweden. Fans guess this is a clear hint of Patty Gudy being part of the selection. Some of the seniors also talk about a girl with a very strong voice, which also fits Patty. On the other hand, there’s another “Celtic” song with an unusual instrument, which is “NOT even Patty”, according to Broder. This got fans excited for the band Storm Seeker. You can watch their entry “Heavaway” here.

“They really got inspired by Michael Jackson” is another reaction we get from the listeners. So far, we haven’t found an act who this could be. Instead, because the rock/metal genre is named multiple times, and also hip hop/rap is said to be included, there’s a big chance From Fall to Spring are part of the line up. You can listen to them below. Also Nu-metal band Lonely Spring are said to be taking part.

But there are also songs the ladies and gentlemen are less enthusiastic about. “On which occasion could you ever listen to something like that?” and “That’s music you can only listen to if you’re not allowed to fall asleep.”

Of course everything’s a matter of taste but those reactions at least give us some rumours to talk about. Who is actually part of the German selection for Eurovision 2023 will be revealed tomorrow. Then we’ll also know who and how many acts will compete for one wildcard via TikTok.

Acts like Leslie Clio and Thomas Godoj, who are established already, did also apply. NDR stated they also were in talks with big record companies and their acts about taking part at Unser Lied für Liverpool. So there will surely be more acts we didn’t mention yet.

Who do you think will fight for the German ticket to Liverpool? Who would you like to see representing Germany at Eurovision 2023 after Malik Harris came last in Turin? Let us know in the comments below.

That’s the list of the acts and songs:

There will be one more from TikTok. The race there is among these:
Betül (“Heaven”),
Leslie Clio (“Free Again”),
From Fall To Spring (“Draw The Line”),
Ikke Hüftgold (“Lied mit gutem Text”),
JONA (“10/10”)
Mitchy & André Katawazi und NashUp (“Summertime”).

I think size 38 actually means that they are just slightly above slimline (so equivalent to 8-10) although the fact that people of this size are sometimes construed as plus size can show how questionable standards can still be.

Hopefully, they learnt something from last year. Though, I’m not holding my breath on that.

There are some acts with Potential there. Likely no Eurovision winner there, but we don’t have to embarrassed (whether we have to be embarrassed of the final entry remains to be seen, but the decent options are there this time) of the selection. I would personally send Patty Gurdy, but LOTL COULD work, and so could Anica Russo with an impactful staging. Overall, at least three steps in the right direction. So all in all, thanks NDR ? now just make sure there is a (if possible demoscopic) jury to prevent Ikke Hüftgold please, thanks ?

Did you get all of those entries based on the clues in that video or do you have insider knowledge? If true, that’s really amazing that patty Gurdy actually got to be a direct competitor, not a TikTok wild card. I heard Melodies of hope on YouTube a while back when I stumbled across it randomly. That would be a great entry for Germany, not to win, but definitely something a little different that could place them above 25th place.

Frida Gold – Alle Frauen in mir sind müde

And Ikke Hüftgold is NOT nominated (zum Glück nicht!!)

Idk what to expect from Germany, they have a solid scene and acts with diverse and very interesting proposals but they seem to always choose something disappointing.
I’ve heard that they do so bc they don’t want to win, but you don’t need to be delivering pitying and disappointing results not to win.
Anyways, it’s weird to see them do these PR stunts just to ultimately deliver something subpart most times.

I’ve got no clue so I’m just gonna wish Germany to choose an entry that could bring them back to the left side of the board at the very least
I adored “Rockstars” and I was in awe when Malik’s rapping came in during the live performance, still don’t think it deserved to finish last
Germany needs to go back to their Lena and Michael Schulte days of glory

I find this a little demeaning to our elders.

OK, I’ve got my expectations sent to neutral and will see if they’ll be above or below the line. I don’t like to think the worst of a natural selection, but Germany hasn’t exactly been persuasive of why we should have high expectations for it. I’ll be shocked if they have anything good tomorrow.

I love how Germany always teases their entry with PR stunts, like it’s not gonna be garbage as usual.

I have no faith in the German selection, but it does seem like they’re making an effort at musical diversity this time, so I hope to be proven wrong. Fingers crossed.

If they don’t have at least a few songs in German on offer, I will be p¡ssed though. Come on, Germany!

Considering Eurovision’s audience is largely made up of families and young people, why did they only include older people? And social media is hardly the place-to-be for many senior citizens, which makes their exclusive inclusion even more baffling. I’m not saying they shouldn’t be involved, but rather there should have been a mix of ages and backgrounds.

It’s a promotional piece to get the viewers watching, Germany also has an ageing population , and in the future the way population growth is increasing, there will be more elderly than young. I need to point out the elderly are members of families, 2. Elderly are as young as they feel. 3. Some elderly do have twitter accounts and finally the elderly love Eurovision too. 🙂

The Turkish one (that letter in her name is not available in my keyboard) or Patty Guddy are the best choices if you ask me! Patty Guddy’s song is absolutely beautiful and it could easily save Germany from the last place
