Georgia is one step closer to finding its singer for Eurovision 2023. From the 16 acts competing in the semi-final of The Voice, eight have now progressed to the grand final next week.

One of these eight will earn the right to wave the Georgian flag in Liverpool this May.

Grand final

The grand final of The Voice Georgia takes place on 2 February.

Voting is already open for the public. They can vote once every 12 hours over the coming week.

The Voice Georgia season five coaches

The line-up of coaches includes a couple of Eurovision connections.

Firstly, Sopho Toroshelidze. She is the lead vocalist of Eldrine, the band that represented Georgia at Eurovision 2011.

Stephane Mgebrishvili almost made it to Eurovision. The Georgian musician was part of Stephane & 3G, who originally prepared to take their song “We Don’t Wanna Put In” to Moscow in 2009. But the EBU said no. They felt the key lyric of the nu-disco track sounded a little bit too much like “We don’t wanna Putin” and was therefore in violation of one of the core rules of the contest forbidding political song lyrics.

The other two coaches are Dato “David” Evgenidze and Dato Porchkhidze. They are both renowned Georgian composers.

What do you make of the The Voice Georgia semi-final results? Are you surprised by any of the coaches’ choices? Sound off in the comments below.

Why do countries still keep using these stupid shows like The Voice and X Factor to pick their representatives for Eurovision?

The Voice and X Factor aren’t actually used that often to pick the Eurovision participant. That’s the purpose of national finals and internal selection. Yes, there have been participants who have been on the Voice and X factor prior to Eurovision but those shows aren’t usually used to select the artist FOR Eurovision. It’s usually just something in they’ve done in their background prior to Eurovision. The Voice Youtube channel does a compliation video every year featuring a grouping of Eurovision participants who have done the Voice in the past and representing in a particular Eurovision year. For example, the… Read more »

As far as I know, Georgia is the only country doing that this year. However, Georgian broadcaster likely does not have the funds to host The Voice and a full NF at the same time

Or they could’ve done another internal selection, but yes, Georgia using the Voice to find their artist is probably killing two birds with one stone.

Its such a weird way of doing it. Eurovision is a song contest, not an artist contest. Sure, the artist matters – things like singing ability, charisma, acting, etc do matter. But if the artist is good but the song isn’t, that’s not a winning formula. Look at Alexander Rybaks return to Eurovision in 2018. He’s a legend. Incredible victory in 2009. But his song in 2018 was corny and bad (in my opinion), and Norway didnt get a great result that year.
