Lithuania kicked off its popular Eurovision selection Pabandom iš Naujo 2023 last week with the show’s first heat. Tens acts qualified from that show, including Gabrielus Vagelis and Ruta Mur. This week it was the turn of 15 new acts and their songs, with ten that made it through to the semi-finals.

Lithuanian star Beatrich came on top of tonight’s second heat, finishing above all the others with the televoting and jury. Meanwhile, Eurovision 2015 alumna Monika Linkyte finished as the show’s runner-up.

Like usual at Pabandom iš Naujo, the acts were judged by a panel of musical experts and journalists. They give a total of 50% of the votes. The other half was determined by the public through SMS votes.

Pabandom iš Naujo 2023 is partially pre-recorded. This means that the show and jury feedback have been pre-decided. The public vote is held during the broadcast with an LRT commentator revealing the eventual result at the end of each broadcast.

You could watch the broadcast from 20:00 CET. It was live on LRT’s website, as well as on LRT1 or LRT Lituanica.

Semi-Final 1 running order of #PIN

  1. Il Senso
  2. Alen Chicco
  3. Baiba
  4. Joseph June
  5. NOY
  6. Petunija
  7. Juste Kraujelyte
  8. Gabrielius Vagelis
  9. Ruta Mur
  10. Donata Virbilaite

The semifinal allocations for pin or out and frankly, I am disappointed with them because they didn’t really shuffle the songs around much, just switched out two songs per heat. Semifinal one is basically heat one except with Donata and Petunija. Semifinal two is basically he too, but with Lukne and Paulina. If they weren’t going to take the effort to do a true shuffle, they should’ve just kept the semi finalists as they were in the same place as the heats.

Gabrielius Vagelis have to win IMO, he is the only one who will bring a good result, a great song and he himself is stunning!

After we know all the performances, my perfect final and the outcome would be something like:

  1. Beatrich
  2. PAULINA
  3. Gabrielius Vagelis
  4. Monika Linkyte
  5. Ruta Mur
  6. Mario Junes
  7. Petunija
  8. NOY
  9. Agne
  10. Juste Kraujelyte

I’m glad Beatrich didn’t dissapoint me, she’s my number one to represent Lithuania at the ESC 2023. Paulina is the next very close choice to me. Overall, I love the energy LRT is putting in making PIN a great music show. As an outcome, I’ve received tons of feedbacks from the Lithuanian compatriots who were praising the quality overall too. Don’t stop!

I also made a list of predicted qualifiers and we seem to differ by one artist. Why do you think NOY Could make the final? he doesn’t come across to me as a strong contender to make it.

Well, it’s not much of a prediction list but rather my favourites in the corresponding order. Depending on which Semi-Final they are allocated, there may be no free spots left for gems. So, a prediction list? Uncertain.   As for NOY, he is a pretty fresh face in the music industry from the Lithuanian X-Factor, and he has built up a decent fanbase since then. Basically, I think he has more chances, compared to Gebrasy, to advance to the final. His style is more appealing to the masses; he is fun to look at, and he has moves. Gebrasy, on… Read more »

I don’t know, Noy came across to me as an awkward, amateur singer playing with the big boys above his league. Sorry for the harsh characterization, but that’s how I see it. That’s why he isn’t in my list of finalists, but I hope regardless of his final result, he can take this experience and use it to develop his craft, and become a stronger singer in the future. It would be to see interesting to see how he develops as an artist in the long term but right now he doesn’t do it for me.

Was she really the reason Lithuania was in the top 10 of the odds? I think we need to really prepare for the possibility that she’s not going to win this selection or worse not make it to the final. We need to be open our minds to other songs. We just saw a fan favorite song failing to make the final for the Norwegian selection last night. RIP freya— you will be missed.

I think that the reason behind Lithuania climbing to the top might be having at least a few decent songs in the national selection. I just noticed that Lithuania re-entered the top ten after Beatrich’s performance became trending in the country. Only Ruta Mur managed to achieve the same, so I guess the battle might be between those two.

Now that we have our semi finalists, here are the ten artists that I think should make it to the final, in no particular order: Gabrielius Vagelis R?ta Mur Paulina Paukštaityt? Just? Kraujelyt? Monika Linkyt? Agn? Gebrasy Petunija Beatrich Mario Junes I admit my list is a little more tilted towards the heat 2 artists but that’s because I think heat 2 was stronger than heat 1 in my opinion. There might be a different artist or two in the final lineup after the semi finals are done but I hope that the majority of this list does make it to the final.

I agree with what you say. When it comes to Lithuania, it seems like a weak national final at the beginning with all of the songs, but once you start cutting out the deadweight week after week, you can actually get a strong lineup for the final. It’s just you have to wade through the muck to get to the gems.

Again not really my kind of music but I thought the PIXLS did great and stood out from the crowd can’t believe they didn’t even qualify. Petunija was at the bottom of my list with Antikvariniai, very shocked they qualified, I guess Anti had a novelty factor, but Petunija had the most bland song of the night.

Sure there’s a lot more going on and Beatrice is good, but I don’t think she’s the right fit for Lithuania. I think Lithuania can do a lot better with Ruta Mur. She has a more unique voice and a song that stands out and gives you more feeling as you progress through the song. I think Ruta, for that reason, could give Lithuania a really good result with a revamp/more highlighted staging later down the line!

I think the opposite, or at least in taste. I would prefer Beatrich because I think she could have a better shot to qualify than Ruta Mur (and I just happen to like her song more). Whether Lithuania will qualify or not will depend on what they’ll choose and how it stacks up against other countries. If they turn out to be weak, then Lithuania will deal with not qualifying this year, but if it’s turn out to be strong, then it’s fine. You can’t always make it every year. Of course, don’t forget that the semi finals are televote only so Lithuania could be fine regardless because they do better with televote than jury but it will all depend on what countries they’re grouped with. And Latvia, a sure 12 televote points in semi final from Latvia (as Ukraine is in the final already).

Also, having Ireland and Latvia in the semi is a benefit, because those two have not been doing so great in terms of qualification. And – if it is the semi final with only 15 countries – Lithuania sails through easily.

The last time Lithuania was in a semi final with just 15 countries, it didn’t qualify but that was because It didn’t have a good song. If Lithuania makes the best choice they can, they might have a chance, but it also depends on what other countries in that semifinal bring to the table. Lithuania could look strong if everyone else is weaker or makes poor choices in their national finals or disappointing internal selections, or it could end up as one of the weaker countries. It’s all a roll of the dice. We’ll have to see where Lithuania ends… Read more »

At this point I think it’ll be Ruta vs Beatrich. Could very close and waiting if someone from the last group can join their party bit winning both jury and televote was a very strong sign

Are the semis defined by a draw? Otherwise, I bet LTR will keep them separated to keep the mystery…

Agreed. Ruta has the better song and her voice is more iconic. However, Beatrich should NOT rule out participating in the future!

The exact standings don’t really matter. The amount of votes is really low until the final and juries usually try to give the big names a lot of points to guarantee their spot in the next stage.

Indeed the heats don’t say much about the televote, because so many people vote on them. Also, I remember PiN’s jury changing their mind about some entries.

I didn’t watch. Have Gebrasy and Donata qualified?

They did. 8th and 9th. Matt Len, Agne and Moon Be were the others ahead of them. And the joke entry was 10th.

Thanks. 🙂 Got scared for a moment, as these are my top 2 (out of released 26 before the show, so I have to check out Monika Linkyte and Beatrich). Lower placement probably means they aren’t winning, though. Too bad. I feel like Gebrasy should take a year or two of pause. It seems like the Lithuanian public isn’t that keen on him going to Eurovision so far. 🙁

Unfortunately, I must agree about Gebrasy. He was great a couple of years ago, but he’s failing to show a different side of him and getting too predictable. He should also work hard on his stage presence if Eurovision is his big goal, which seems it is.

I agree. He has his style. Works for me, but not so much for Lithuanians, it seems. Sadly, his best song was kinda wasted on the glorified internal choice of 2021 (I am honestly still salty of the tremendous pressure people were getting when suggesting anyone but The Roop in a supposed selection). His subsequent two songs are still very, very good for me, but he needs something in a different direction now.

Saw his performance. Yeah, the vocals are on-point, and the song is great, but he seems to be in his own world. Not attempts at focusing on camera cues or connecting with the audiences. I hope that he works on that, because he has the huge potential for Eurovison.

Or they’re telling him that he’s not competing with the right song. Even in 2021 when he and the roop had the only two good songs that year, I felt like he was only winning his heat and semi final as a placeholder for the roop’s in the final.

Nobody could have won over The Roop in 2021. Holding a selection didn’t have the same purpose it usually has. I actually preferred Gebrasy’s song (even if I love Discoteque too), and was treated like I was speaking heresy on Wiwibloggs. Everyone wanted to see The Roop at ESC, and so it was.

He was really good. Loved his voice and presence. I wish his song was better. He really sold that performance and was’t that easy.

Did the “we are fragile creatures” section get cut? That was the goosebumps moment for me on the live version

I loved Monika’s song so much, but Petunija…. Left me in chills, the song, the vocals, the staging, absolutely fantastic!

I like Petunija’s video clip. But live at PIN she was underwhelming.

Is Petunija’s song why Lithuania is #7 in the odds?

It’s dropped down to number 9 now. Still not bad, but do we have anything here that can warrant remaining in the betting odds top 10? We’ll see.

Probably. That’s why it dropped now. It was underwhelming.

Everyone else would have to be extremely weak for Lithuania to succeed as a contender. There are a couple of people doubting Lithuania’s chances to qualify but Lithuania usually does better with the televote and the semi finals only have televote this year so the country could have a chance.
