Consider the day seized. Joker Out — the rock band representing Slovenia at Eurovision 2023 — have debuted their song for Liverpool “Carpe Diem”.

“Carpe Diem” is an alternative rock track with a retro tinge. The lyrics are in Slovene, making 2023 the second year in a row Slovenia has sent a track in their native language.

Slovenia at Eurovision 2023: Joker Out — “Carpe Diem”

Joker Out was selected to represent Slovenia in Liverpool through an internal selection by Radiotelevizija Slovenia. The song was revealed in the televised show Misija Liverpool

Joker Out’s song title is in Latin, “Carpe Diem”, meaning “Live in the Moment”. The music video shows the boyband indeed living in the moment, and partying hard. The band is in a hotel, bringing everyone together in a huge party with their music. We see people in traditional costumes, adding a note of Slovene culture to the party.

Who are Joker Out?

The group consists of Bojan Cvjetićanin, Kris Guštin, Jan Peteh, Jure Maček and Martin Jurkovič. Formed in 2016, they describe their sound as “shagadelic rock ‘n’ roll.” They have three wins at Slovenia’s Golden Whistle Awards, which celebrates the best in Slovenian pop music. They won Rookie of the Year in 2020 and Artist of the Year in 2021 and 2022.

It’s good, but is it good enough? I was expecting something bigger & more camp considering that the band’s catchphrase is ”shagadelic”.

Anyway, even if this doesn’t qualify I’m glad I discovered Joker Out.

I take my previous comments back after watching their live performance. The band members are CUTE, the singer has charisma and his live vocals are great.

I would ditch that music video and go for the live performance which sells it much much better. These guys are cute as hell and very good vibes!

People be sleeping on this because of the Spain and Norway gimmick acts (as good as they are, and I am obsessed with Spain personally speaking) but this is a great song and the live performance of this was FIRE!

Don’t sleep on this. These kids can perform.

Calling Spain’ act a gimmick is quite disrespectful and culturally insensitive, I’d like to apologize on behalf of your naivety to the rest of this site’s visitors.

We don’t need you to apologise on behalf of other people. We just need you to respect other people’s opinion. And your interpretation of his opinion is just yours, don’t assume it’s everybody else’s, it’s disrespectful.

Blanca Paloma is honoring Spain’s cultural heritage and calling it a gimmick is simply not an “opinion”, it’s just plain disrespectful and wrong, there’s no other interpretation to be made in this case.

Tell me you don’t like the song without saying you don’t like the song. Actually, I think Slovenia could be lucky to qualify, considering they are in the “weaker” semifinal.

Flat song that doesn’t go anywhere. They are good live though, but I don’t know if good live performance will take them to the final. Song itself is really really flat in a desperate need of an actual chorus which is nonexistent. But it has a good baseline, but after a couple of listening you get bored of a baseline too.

Will it qualify? The song has zero chance but their live performance and their cuteness migh take them through.

This song really deserves to bring Slovenia back in the finals. Their live at Misija Liverpool was aided by the audience dancing in the back, which made the performance more dynamic. I am curious to see the staging in Liverpool.

Well I have been bigging up Slovenia to my friends this year, expecting good things when Joker Out were announced. And actually I’m not disappointed by this at all. Writing after first listen and it was nice to listen to and catchy. Not the typical eurovision song but with the right staging I can see this qualifying. Good luck Slovenia, this is definitely an improvement on last year.

I liked it already when I watched the music video and the live performance already boosted my opinion about it. They look great on camera, seem to know how to fill a stage with ease. What I appreciate the most here is that this is pure indie rock without trying to sound like an Eurovision entry. There’s no gimmick, no attempt to follow the structure of a pop song, they’re just doing their thing. It’s authentic and I hope they get a good result to Slovenia.

Currently my 2nd too, behind Spain. I’m glad them and Norway really shaked things up this Saturday, because I wasn’t fond of the 4 songs we had until then. I’m sure Czech Republic will make a solid choice too, so the heat is getting higher, as The Roop would sing.

This is not a bad effort from Slovenia, however, I have a hard time remembering it after I listen to it. I wish there was a little more of a punch to keep it firmly in my brain, but I wonder if it’s a language barrier, but then I remember many songs that are non-English, so I don’t get why I can’t remember it.

Maybe not the most popular style of music but I wouldn’t say the hype is for nothing. That’s something someone who doesn’t care about music will say. Personally, I’m into it. If they are capable of bringing a good live performance that is able to translate their charisma and joy to the audience.

I mean, if they are capable of doing that on stage they will be able to qualify. Though for some reason, I think this is like Georgia’s Midnight Gold that would benefit from the juries.

There is a live version on YouTube the lead singer is incredibly charismatic. If they play their cards right, all the teenage girls will stan them by April. And deservingly so, cos they’re talented and charming with a great song.
