The search for Italy’s Eurovision 2023 superstar continued on Wednesday with the second night of the 73rd annual Sanremo Music Festival.

On Tuesday, 14 of 28 artists performed as part of night 1. On Wednesday, the remaining 14 artists presented their original songs, accompanied by an orchestra, with their hopes to claim the biggest prize in Italian music.

All Sanremo acts will perform their tracks again throughout the course of the week. The festival champion will be offered first refusal on the opportunity to represent Italy at Eurovision 2023 in Liverpool.

The results will be determined by a combination of three voting methods — the public televote, the press jury, and the demoscopic jury, consisting of 300 music fans from across Italy.

However, on these first two nights, the rankings below have been determined solely by the press.

Ok. I’ve now become obsessed with Made in Italy by Rosa Chemical. I was sceptical to begin with, because I thought it sounded slightly monotonous and repetitive, but no! It’s grown out of proportion and I can’t stop listening! It’s been very much on repeat. This is my favourite by a long mile and, dare I say, the only one I actually like!

I’m feeling fairly disappointed by the festival overall, I must say. Last year’s was SOOOO much better quality.

Can anybody from Italy tell me top 5 songs which italian people seem to be most hyped up about?

If they like those 2 the most then I hope one of those 2 will win, they are both good songs anyway and would do well in the contest.

I would like Mr. Rain to win the whole thing with “Supereroi”. The best ballad for me was “Lasciami”. Both upopular opinions, I’m afraid 🙁

I wish that could happen. I think he would do well at ESC, the song’s just pure feeling, beautiful melody, and the children multiply every emotion by billion. “Supereroi” has power to reach people’ hearts

But he can’t bring the children to Eurovision both because they violate the six person limit, and they are way under the minimal age limit of 16. Their parts will have to be pre-recorded backing vocals.

But what about if it’s pulled from an already existing old song? I’m not sure if the sampled parts are old, but it sure sounds like it. Pretty sure everything in the song has to be from this year, even if it’s pre-recorded vocals

I like how Italy is mining the 1980s at just a slightly different angle from everyone else, from Elodie’s sophisticated R-n-B to Colapesce Dimartino’s turn-of-the-decade disco-gone-weird to Giorgia’s twinkly keyboards.

Madame – “Il bene nel male” would by far and without any doubt be the best artist for Italy to select for Eurovision. Such a great song by an even greater artist………goosebumps

I caught up with some songs that I didn’t get to hear last night, i’ll be honest, whilst night 1, there wasn’t really a song I loved per se, I liked a l lot songs last night, Madame, Colapesce DiMartino, Luzza, Ros Chemical, LDA, and Sethu ( there might’ve been some I missed) As someone who likes ballads, I can appreciate Marco’s vocal but the song (perhaps its a language thing idk) feels like its missing something, I wasn’t wowed by it but it was alright. Italy have some good songs to choose from so it’ll be interesting to see… Read more »

I agree, Lazza for the win and with the right staging it can do very well in Liverpool. Then I have Colapesce and Mr Rain but they have quite a few good modern options there.

You have to know Madame has been cought in a fraud of a false certification for Covid 19. She had a false green ertificate, even though she has never got any vaccine shot. She is actually under investigation. She then apologized on a post on Instagram, who actually made the thing worse. Then she removed the post. She was justifying herself saying her parents are novax. I don’t believe she will be huge on televote due to this.

Am I the only person who found Madame’s live performance a bit disappointing? The studio cut of the song is awesome though.

Rosa Chemical is a bit too repetitive for my taste but it’s a very good song. The chorus does not elevate it.

My favourites so far are Madame and Olly.

Lazza was pretty good, and I also enjoyed Tananai, but he has to work on his charisma, there wasn’t much happening on stage, song and his voice was good tho. I didn’t experience the magic of “yep, this is the winner without a doubt” I had with all of their last entries since 2017, but there’ll be three more nights, so maybe the magic will come.

Lazza and Colapesce DiMartino for tonight but after having heard everyone, there’s not a doubt in my mind that Ultimo has THE song that ought to win Sanremo. My 2nd choice would be Blanco with the song he “performed” yesterday. But since that one is not competing, it’s Ultimo or nobody for me.

Sabrina

Math isn’t my strongest asset, but if nothing changed, I guess they keep adding the results. So, tomorrow the demoscopic and the televote join and tonight’s result keeps being used. Than the 3 sections vote on Friday. And then they vote again Saturday. When combining all these results, we get a top 3. Don’t ask me what percentage tonight’s result would have though!

Thanks. What’s the real question is can someone who’s placed lower end-up winning, and I think that the answer is yes. I saw that Maneskin were ranked as 7th out of 13 entries by the press on their first evening. Also, the orchestra placed them as 10th in their ranking. They still ended-up winning. So, I guess that Madame, Lazza, Elodie, and Ultimo all have a chance. Perhaps Leo too. The audiences can turn things around. 😉

It was the demoscopica that voted first in 2021. Måneskin were 15th after the first two nights’ combined results, and the orchestra then placed them 6th for their cover. The press actually loved them and voted them 2nd. But it shows that with a strong enough result the other evenings, a tanking one night isn’t necessarily the end.

Congrats to Colapesce & Dimartino. Also, good 2nd and 4th for Madame and Lazza (even if I hope they might ultimately win, once we get an actual televote and actual juries behind them). Again, a shameful last place. Anna Oxa didn’t deserve it, Sethu didn’t either. The press jury in Italy is even more useless than the demoscopic one in Spain.

I think it’s because a non-italian can’t understand that she indeed use the same words but with different meanings. It’s a play on words. In Italian is : Nel bene e nel male Fai bene e fai male Baby, nel bene e nel male Fai bene e fai male Quanto bene e male Nel bene e nel male A me resta il bene, a te resta il male Non male per me But in English is something like this: For better or for worse You do right and you do wrong Baby, for better or for worse You do right… Read more »

The ones I was anticipating before nearly all delivered, Madame, Colapesce e DiMartino and Elodie my top 3 after the first impressions and it’s very likely to remain that way, hoping that one of those will be the entry for Liverpool. Second night overall clearly stronger than the first one.
