We’re halfway through the biggest week in Italian music, as the 73rd annual Sanremo Music Festival rolls on.
On Thursday all 28 artists performed their songs on Night 3. Coming into tonight, Marco Mengoni topped the ranking, with Colapesce & Dimartino and Madame rounding out the top three.
But the public cast their votes this time around and there’s change near the top. We say near because Marco Mengoni remains on top. But Ultimo and Mr. Rain have managed to push up behind him.

Are you watching Sanremo? Who is your favourite act so far? Let us know in the comments section below.
Poople forgot about Diodato and Maneskin been 3 and 7/8 in the ranks and then won….
Especially this year we will have top 5 in the Superfinal
Only one surprise in those results, Mr. Rain being third. When the participants were announced I figured Marco and Ultimo were locks for the superfinal, with the third spot up for grabs.Their fanbases are just so much bigger than the rest.
It’s a top five this year though!
I don’t know how that’s going to change things…but probably makes it easier for the act that’s 1st place throughout to seal the deal.
since I was a child I have heard that the real winner of Sanremo is whoever sells the most records, and in fact it has always been like this, some winners no one remembers them…! and the same will be this year. I see that Lazza has twice as many streams as Mengoni on Spotify…. will that be a sign??
Italy sent Mahmood, Maneskin AND Diodato recently. How much more proof do you need that Italy are not locked into one genre and WILL choose the best song to win SanRemo, regardless? Show some faith! They haven’t been letting us down exactly.
Just reading the comments here. It’s a bit alarming to see people slate Marco’s song which is above and beyond anything entered so far for Eurovision this year. Then, they go on to completely overreact to the Czech republic song like it’s some sort of revelation in music. There are at least 6 songs in Sanremo this year that trample the entire list of songs we have heard from other countries both selected and in National Finals. So can we please stop pretending to give hate to Sanremo when we all know it’s a festival of high calibre? Please? Thanks!
Fans don’t compare it to current ESC songs, but just say it’s boring option for Eurovision.
I agree. Mengoni’s song is nice but that isn’t good for Eurovision because no one would understand the song and it would not impressed both the juries and the public.
I understand that Sanremo is a festival of high calibre 🙂 But I began to get the impression that the press and juries at Sanremo always prefer ballad songs as safe choices; rather than giving chance for more original songs like Madame’s song.
There are many good ballad songs sent by Italy a
but Mengoni’s songs will not impressed both the audience and the juries at Eurovision. I know Sanremo is more important than Eurovision for Italians but many fans also have higher expectations from Italy.
First of all, in the past 12 years, Italy sent ballads only two times (I’m not considering ballads Grande Amore and No Degrees of Separation, different genres, while Fai Rumore didn’t compete) before this. And it’s not even said that will be the song for the entry. Press and Juries don’t use to do any safe choice, since Sanremo is not meant to be a National Final for ESC. Maybe one could say Italy make safe choices, but I don’t think it will be fair, because the whole Sanremo is an Italy’s expression, not only the winner. Sanremo tries to… Read more »
This is obviously a field of high caliber. My problem is (quite a few) great songs getting hosed in the rankings.
Look, he is good but he already been there in 2013, he can win SanRemo but just dont go to Liverpool.
Whilst I do love a good classic Italian ballad, they’ve been done to death at Eurovision. Italy has recently taken risks and left their Italian ballad phase behind, I hope they don’t go back with Marco Mengoni.
Madame & Elodie (or Rosa Chemical) are my top picks. But as we all know, Italy favors men over women, unfortunately, so it’ll be near to impossible for them to beat Marco.
I doubt either makes the final. It’s probably going to be an all male final three.
It seems that Italians would prefer boring ballads ? Mengoni’s and Ultimo’s songs are typical, nothing special songs. I don’t even see any difference between Mengoni’s 2013 song and this year song. Italy cant get high public votes if they send Marco Mengoni to Eurovision.
We will be fair here and say, if Marco Mengoni sends this song, it’ll be a top 5, contender. It’s an amazingly composed song. He sings the living daylights out of it. He’s very handsome, Italian always sounds great in music. So no matter if you are bored of ballads, they are still prevalent in music globally. I would pick Madame for Eurovision as I love that song, but if she doesn’t get the gig, Marco will give Italy a great result nonetheless.
I also like Madame’s song 🙂 At this stage, does Madame’s song have still a chance to win Sanremo?
U OVERhyping him – u are probably Italian … Its not going to be in Top10 even
So happy with the love for Lazza
Both Ultimo and Marco Mengoni should not be chosen to represent Italy at Eurovision. There are much better, original songs than their songs. Neither juries nor the public would for boring Italian ballads. Madame or Lazza should be chosen to represent Italy.
LOL Juries would def go for Marco!!!
I dont mean the juries of Sanremo. I mean the juries who would vote for songs at Eurovision. We already heard many Italian slow ballads.
I am Talking about the juries at Eurovision.Of course the would go for that voice and emotion that Marco shows….!
Lazza is the only song I like to listen to the live version instead of studio cut, it is so much more dynamic
Can they offer the Eurovision ticket for someone other than the winner? Because I’m afraid they will end up with the most boring predictable ballad.
Before the event every artist say if they want to go to Eurovision. If they decline they go down the rankings to the next one. It happened before that the winner didn’t go to Eurovision!
Complain all you want, but barring 2016, San Remo has delivered top 10 placements for Italy
they said whoever wins goes to Eurovision (meaning probably everyone from the 28 participants are willing to go)
I voted for Elodie but seeing she came 9th I think thath in the final I’ll vote for Lazza
The whining in this comment section is laughable! Italians don’t vote for a song to go to Eurovision, they vote for a song to win the Italian song festival, voice, emotions and also lyrics are a factor (because guess what…. italians do actually understand what every artist is singing)
Totally go aling with you!
Sanremo in Italy is much more important than Esc.
I’m sure, everybody gets that. But this is a Eurovision blog. You can’t possibly be surprised that Eurovision comes up here once in a while.
Of course Eurovision comes up…Nevertheless the fandom has always been toxic and whiny for the most part!
lol let’s be honest they vote massively because he is super popular and respected there and happened to have fine song too. We’re really overrating this festival.
Your point being?
If Italy sends Marco Mengoni to Eurovision, their position would be around 10th-15th. The song is average ballad.
Boh get over yourself. If that’s what happens at eurovision, so be it. San Remo is bigger than EU for Italians.
And tbh San Remo has delivered great consistent top 10 results over the last decade so eat a d*ck
It really isn’t an average ballad. I just think you don’t like ballads. But it’s very contrary that Eurovision fans have negative opinions on an Italian selection that is above and beyond what is entered in Eurovision, then they literally have orgasms over something like this year’s Czech song which is a complete mess sonically.
I really don’t understand why Mengoni and Ultimo are on the top. Their songs are boring; nothing special.
because the Italians prefer it
Paying to vote Italians
Their top 3 is my top 3 😀
I just don’t get Marco Mengoni. It just doesn’t hit me, I guess. I also think that Ultimo’s voice gets very flat in the more emotional part of the song, so nah. Not for me, but it’ll be probably one of them.
Lazza is still my number one, but I was surprised by Elodie, it’s low-key a bop. And Mr. Rain really really got me hard this time. I don’t like children’s choirs, but damn, the second time around it hits hard.
Marco would be a really good winner but I really want to see Madame, Colapesce/Dimartino or Elodie win. I would also be fine with Lazza. Ultimo has a voice I really like but the song is not as good as I tuoi particolari for me. Tananai has a solid yet not impressive song. All in all I at least like all frontrunners so that’s good but I still hope Madame will be able to win this.
Anyone knows who has said yes to Eurovision should they win?
I’m fine with Marco (if only to increase the eye candy in Liverpool) but am I the only person who really doesn’t get the Ultimo song?
Anyway, due to the false Covid 19 green pass certification scandal involving Madame (she is under investigatio from one month on it) I find very complicate she will be able to top the televote. Italians who were duly vaccined (3 or 4 times) and complied to all the rules and laws, will find her behaviour extremely irritating and probably choose someone else.
I had heard that Italians are usually hypochondriac xd
I’m sorry Europe, apparently the risk of us sending to Eurovision the most boring song ever Is real
Agree; Mengoni’s song is good but boring; as if it was an entry for eurovision 1993
Elodie being just 9th is ridiculous – her song would be at least top 5 in Eurovision, yet Italians prefer boring ballad that won’t win.
I think your top 5 claim on Elodie is questionable, but this isn’t a eurovision national final. San Remo is bigger than “eurovision” they’re choosing a winner of their festival. Get over it
am i the only one really happy with marco leading?
but i also agree madame and elodie deserve to do really well too, especially madame
Already resigned myself to the fact that Mengoni will be the one going to Liverpool, respectable entry and performer obviously, but definitely not the most exciting choice in this lineup. Blanca Paloma will still reign supreme in the meantime as far as I’m concerned.
a fine song performed pretty well both times, but i really just don’t get the hype either. Ultimo’s song is at least quite dynamic. Also, Mr Rain at #3? Not sure about you, but that song is also really underwhelming to me
Man, I love seeing Tananai doing so well but I hate that Madame is being robbed on plain sight, I feel so outraged for her 🙁
I really can’t decide which of these two is my favourite. I appreciate them both in complete different ways. ;;
I really hope madame, but well, marco is so obvious winning it
Same like Maneskin in 2021? 😀
Ofc those demoscopic twats massacred my faves just like they do every single year. Madame deserves the top 3 so much, but your typical boomer grannie will prop up sappy and formulaic crap like Mr Rain and Ultimo over actually good song… I’m so over this show
So can someone tell me why Italy hates women? Not a single one in the top 5 when Madame has a phenomenal song?
And they havent sent a single woman since 2016? The misogyny is showing
There have only been 2 female winners of San Remo the past 20 years. Italian women should try and enter via San Marino if they really want to go to Eurovision because they have zero chance with San Remo.
Elisa would have been a safer bet last year.
I mean she can still manage to get to superfinal
Even if she does, with demoscopic + public votes being 67% in the superfinal I wouldn’t see her having a chance sadly… the typical Sanremo viewer is over 50 and prefers the sappy staff. Look at 2019, Mahmood only won because the jury was made up of experts + press and it weighted 50%. The demoscopic “jury” goes for the safe picks even more than the public vote. With the current system he wouldn’t have even been top 10 and wouldn’t have gained the mainstream recognition he currently has
And people gave Sweden a hard time of sending a long string of male singers to Eurovision, which has only been broken recently.
Marco’s song is boring and Ultimo can’t sing. But I think Mr Rain or Lazza could still win this and they’d do well at Eurovision. Still praying for Madame, but seeing how mygonistic people seem to be, this won’t happen. Madame would be their best chance tho
Agree. Marco’s song is boring
No idea how Olly’s Polvere ended up near the bottom of the scoreboard. Makes no sense. It should be in the top 3!
Glad to see Rosa Chemical going up to 7th place, though! If he gets in the top 5 by Saturday, I think there is a fair chance people from home will vote for him. The song is an absolute banger and different from what’s on the radio right now.
I’m rooting for him really badly. I just would love to see him compete in Liverpool.
Rosa Chemical’s track is a bit of an entertaining meme, but this is not San Marino, even top 10 in Sanremo would be way too generous…
Too generous? Have you listened to the rest of the songs?
Why do female vocalists even bother participating in this show?
Bc you’re supposedly part of the cream of the Italian music industry if you take part of Sanremo
To promote themselves and their songs. Almost everyone there is or will be big in Italy…!
Ultimo and specially Mr Rain had to really go big with televote to make those jumps. Like 10% in the worst scenario. Also both doing that means Mengoni probably didn’t get more than 15%. Had to be close. But maybe all 3 were so strong and far ahead idk. Italian public and specially demoscopic like their ballads usually. Kudos to Lazza also for going up in this scenario.
Even if Marco’s song could do better I would rather take Mr. Rain cause Marco’s song would be so boring option for Eurovision, it’s that generic Italian ballad
I honestly don’t see how you can hold up Marco’s song as “generic” and then hold up Mr. Rain as the alternative to that.
Because his song doesn’t sound so generic.
Marco’s song is SO overrated. I have no emotional attachment to it like I have for Mr Rain’s song, or EVEN Madame or Ultima or Lazzo OR Rosa Chemical!
Agreed. Marco’s song is crap.
You’re overreacting, it’s far from crap. maybe it’s not to your taste perhaps you’re not into ballads but as far as ballads go, this is amazing.
Yay Tananai still in the top 5 <3
Gianmaria, Leo Gassman and Paola & Ciara should be higher IMO but who cares… Mengoni is winning this.
Wouldn’t mind Mr. Rain either. I really don’t get the Madame or Lazza hype…
If Ultimo and Mr. Rain are the competition, then give me Marco, I guess. (shrug)
Oh well, at least I have the LRDL episode next in my White Lotus binge tonight.
Ok Lazza can still win this. I think Mr. Rain won televoting.
Lazza on the Top 5 against four ballads. If this were to happen on Saturday he has a realistic shot 😮
Some surprising results! But I’m sure no surprise who’s in the top spot for many, looks like Marco will be the winner. Will have to put all my eggs into Lazza’s basket for now.
Well, it was a nice run with Italian entries between my favorites in Eurovision, but I’m definitely not feeling Sanremo’s results this year.
This was like Francesca and Fedez in 2021 or Il Volo in in 2019. Also Irama and Elisa last year. They just like their Ballads I guess idk. It’s usually the trend this kind of vote.
It’s mostly about notoriety and fanbase, those play too much of a role sadly.
Yes. You are right. But remember Mahmood and Francesco Gabbani both won as newcomers. Of course they both won Sanremo Giovani the previous year, but they didn’t have the huge fanbases of Marco Mengoni and the fact he won once already. And both have been driven to the first place mostly by the quality judges or demoscopoic jury, to avoid the same boring song goes to eurovision. Due to this, I am still not 100% sure Marco Mengoni will actually make it. Let’s say, he has 60% chances to win it, but Mr Rain with the child chorus may be… Read more »
Madame, Elodie and Colapesce + DiMartino all outside the top 5 is outrageously bad, especially Madame, are Italians mad! You can never count the televote out from being a disaster, no matter the country, this is well and truly the one thing that “unites” all Europeans.
I’m Italian and trust me, I too don’t understand how is possible that Colapesce DiMartino and Elodie are out the top 5.
Madame sinking so much is ridiculous
Marco where he belongs. Over and out.
Are these results from televote alone or a combination of the first three evenings?
Televotes plus demoscopic jury. Don’t know if the press room are combined or not. Probably yes.
Article says combination of televote and demoscopic jury tonight.
So, the press gets two evenings, but the televote doesn’t even get a single one just for them? I felt like some of the songs were probably more liked by the televote than the result suggests.
I guess you’ve got to hold at least one set of results back, otherwise, simple mathematics would probably reveal the winner before the final show.
Doesn’t the final show get its own set of votes? Plus, doesn’t top 3 (now top 5) get all votes erased once they enter the top, and then get voted for again?
Yes. In the final televote only will define the top 5 spots. Then the votes will be reset and the winner will be selected by a mix of televote 34%, demoscopic jury 33% and press jury 33%.
Not a single woman in Top 5
Am very surprised about Anna Oxa and Giorgia.
I know they are legends but this is not the 90’s anymore.
My top 5 is actually also 5 men (not the same 5 though) with Paola & Ciara at 6
The results…… Italy you’re lost
Now these are results I’m not thrilled about. Go Lazza, I guess.
So happy for Mr Rain and Ultimo
Very deserved
As I said. Marco Mengoni on top.
God it bugs me that the credits are rolling before the results have been revealed!
I feel sorry for the guests who come out at the very end, people just want them to go away so the results can be read.
Yeh you can hear the audience are a lot less vocal now. And they must all have very soar hands after all that clapping.
