The Busker Malta Eurovision 2023

The Busker will sing “Dance (Our Own Party)” for Malta at Eurovision 2023.

At Malta Eurovision Song Contest, the trio beat out repeat MESC acts Matt Blxck and Brooke to win the ticket of Liverpool. They charmed their way to Malta’s hearts singing a sax-loaded upbeat anthem about bringing friends home for their own party.

Malta in Eurovision 2023: The Busker with “Dance (Our Own Party)”

The Busker’s current line-up got together in 2020 in Malta. The band consists of Dav Jr on vocals and guitar, Sean Meachen on saxophone and Jean Paul Borg on drums. Dav, Sean and Jean will fly the Maltese flag in Liverpool after winning the Malta Eurovision Song Contest with 121 points, beating out runner-up Ryan Hili by a 36 point margin.

The boys have a special connection to Liverpool. The Busker told wiwibloggs they have previously busked near the world-famous Cavern Club, and attended shows at the M&S Bank Arena twice. Drummer Jean Paul is also a huge Beatles fan with the unique Liverpool accent, being a huge Beatles fan.

Jean Paul said: “I love Liverpool! And it’s super special that we get to perform there. We just love the UK in general. We have also performed in Manchester and London.”

What do the “Dance (Our Own Party)” lyrics mean?

“Dance (Our Own Party)” is about escaping a large-scale event to break away with a group of friends for their own more intimate party, to escape the anxiety of crowds.

The Busker told wiwibloggs: “‘Dance (Our Own Party)’ is a funky tune mixed with The Busker’s signature sound. The storyline is a trip of someone triggered by social anxiety at a party, finding comfort in leaving with a couple of friends to go to a familiar and more comforting setting.

“Since COVID hit, the three of us have felt more comfortable in our own environment surrounded by people that we are closer with. The song in general is a journey of how one gets out of such a party, and heads back to their home with their friends to throw their own intimate party.”

“Dance (Our Own Party)” lyrics — The Busker (Malta Eurovision 2023)

Wait now,

Can you speak up
It’s a little bit loud
I’m a little bit lost
Oh

Fogged up

Might be the drinks
Or the social tease
Of anxiety

The tension
I’m getting
The faces I drew on

I can’t focus
Should’ve known this
When the tik gets toking I’m gone

I feel better
In my sweater
Got my stereo
I’ll play you songs you know

But Hey,
Wait,
What you say?

Do you want to dance?
Do you want to dance?
Do you want to dance?
Do you want to dance?
Dance

It’s on
Yeah, we go outside
Take the very first ride
Try to save our night

If you’re keen
I got some indoor shoes
I can offer you
Get you in the groove

The tension
Is lifting
Another moment would’ve been too much

This the real me
Our own Party
Our own Party
Our own Party

I feel better
In my sweater

Gaga radio
Is this the song you know?

Hey
Wait
What you say?

Do you want to dance?
Do you want to dance?
Do you want to dance?
Do you want to dance?
Dance

I feel better
In my sweater

Gaga radio
Is this the song you know?

But hey
What you say?

Do you want to dance?
Do you want to dance?
Do you want to dance?
Do you want to dance?
Do you want to dance?
Do you want to dance?

Dance

If he feels better in his sweater, why doesn’t he smile? I don’t think that this rendering will qualify.

That’s cute and all, but this isn’t the song we’re getting in Liverpool. You know, just Malta things.

Malta participated 34 times in the ESC. It changed its song twice. Can we move in from the jibes and hate.

It is the final song, a revamp at most is what will change.

Best song from Malta in years. I hope it qualifies. Great bop. I also hope there is room for 2 saxophone acts if Moldova choose Sunstroke Project

“You fit me better than my favourite sweater” isn’t it from a Lana Del Rey song?! How original!

More original than say “Sticks and stones won’t break my bones…”.

I wanna like it, but as for now, I don’t quite understand it
It’s like supposed to make me wanna dance, obviously, but he’s basically whispering it, which isn’t making me hyped and, well, wanting to dance

The first time since 2014 I like the maltese entry.

Good luck to the guys, you deserve a place in the grand final.

This song feels like the child of these two songs:

Benjamin Ingrosso – Dance You Off (Sweden 2018) &
Sunstroke Project – Hey Mamma (Moldova 2017)

Honestly, I hope so too. Yummy Mommy is dreadful and doesn’t live up to their past attempts.

Honestly this is my favourite selected song so far (though I have others I like more in UMK etc). It’s been stuck in my head, they really engage the crowd, it’s great live outside of the fact the lead singer’s breath control needs work towards the end of the song with the choreography as lively as it is. This seems like the kind of song that easily makes the final off the televote and then opens it.

Very relatable song as someone who struggled to go to parties and social situations when I was younger!

Every year there is one song that is heavily underrated but I defend to the death. I can already feel that this is gonna be that song this year.
All the ppl complaining abt brooke I feel like have forgotten the maltese entries of the past that sound exactly like checkmate and get last in the televote. She would not have qualified, the busker was maltas only chance to get the final this year. Rly hoping for them to place well

Although I loved Checkmate, I think you’re probably right. The Busker have a really nice, funky tune which is more likely to attract public support

I think Matt Blxck would also have had a chance of qualifying

Also Malta does well with bands – or at least, they qualify – Gianluca, Kurt Calleja, Firelight were all in the final and Gianluca landed 8th place with 100% televoting system!
