Turku ’bout to get lit! On Saturday, February 25th Finland’s Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu finally goes live. The country’s national selection for Eurovision 2023 is already considered one of the strongest — if not the strongest — of the year, owing to the quality of the artists and their songs. From frothy dance filler to an emotional ballad to mainstream pop rock, the Finns have already served.

Ahead of the show, the Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of musical unprofessionals — have listened to and rated each of the songs. The panel for this jury includes 10 people, who hail from Finland, the U.K, Australia, Germany, Romania, and the United States.

Next up are the streaming kings KUUMAA with the song “Ylivoimainen.” At the time of writing this, they’re #1 on the Spotify Top 50 in Finland. Do we think that will translate into votes on the night of the competition? Read on to find out…

KUUMAA — “Ylivoimainen” (UMK 2023 Review)

Deban: Ylivoimainen is a familiar piece of pop that truly stands in its own lane. Referencing global acts like The Feeling and Depeche Mode in parts, Kuumaa have successfully merged nostalgia with their own signature singing style. The result here is compelling: a perfect slice of anthemic Finnish pop-rock. This could win UMK in a landslide, but even if it doesn’t, it remains one of the most heartwarming entries in recent years.

Score: 8

William: This is far and away the most-played of all the UMK 2023 songs on my iPhone. KUUMA have managed to deliver a pop song that pushes forward despite the heavy nostalgia and melancholy that underscore pretty much all of it. I don’t speak Finnish, but the song transmits desire, longing and regret loud and clear — and it all feels so smooth and polished. That the lead singer has those vocals — and that handsome face — only adds to the allure. My favourite studio cut in a stellar field.

Score: 9

Rik:  Based on my personal taste, this is probably the song I’d listen to the most — outside of Eurovision. It’s giving me nostalgia, the beautiful Finnish language and some high-quality production. But to stand out, this really needs some creative staging. At the moment I’d say this is not the song that should represent Finland this year because there are better options. I still love the studio cut though.

Score: 8

Dayana: “Ylivoimanen” is a sweet cocktail of nostalgia and modern love. Johannes sounds incredible live and I have high hopes for their UMK performance — go Kuumaa!

Score: 9

Tom: Again, another 80s style track. However, unlike “Hoida Mut” where it is unapologetically 80’s, “Ylivoimainen” feels like they are trying to modernise and bring the 80’s to 2023. From personal experience, this is fun to close your eyes and dance alone to — I love the energetic chorus. It feels darker, cooler and is less pulsating than “Hoida Mut”. I don’t like comparing the two, but it is hard not to. I just hope that KUUMAA’s staging will be completely different to Benjamin’s, so they don’t cancel each other out on the night.

Score: 7.5

Sebastian: KUUMAA deliver a sweet, upbeat 80s pop track with “Ylivoimanen” — and I am LIVING. It has sleeper radio hit appeal — it’s not pretending to be too much, but it knows it’s solid. KUUMAA’s lead singer has a sweet tone to his voice, and by all accounts, strong performer energy. While it’s probably not the front runner going into UMK, I could see this sleeper hit waking up the audience and taking the crown.

Score: 7

Ruxandra: Can somebody explain to me why this song is so underrated? They seem to me a well-calibrated boy band with a nice sound, a song that has a good structure, indie vibes and good lyrics. This song brings some nostalgia — it reminds me of the boy bands that were on the radio on early 00s. The whole song and the message match with the black and white imagery that they bring in the music video. If they could bring the concert atmosphere from their music video to a live performance on the ESC stage, then this would definitely do well.

Score: 9.5

Calvin: There’s a power here that I struggle to translate into words. The first time I listened to this, I wasn’t necessarily hooked. But once it’s inside your head you can’t escape “Ylivoimainen” anymore. It has a hypnotising quality, spinning around between verses and choruses. A flow of nostalgia hits my body and thoughts catch my mind while I’m jamming to this wonderful song. I don’t see this having the instant appeal to do well at Eurovision, but I wouldn’t mind being proven wrong.

Score: 9

Samuel: “Ylivoimainen” demonstrates the strength of this year’s UMK line up. I don’t see it at Eurovision, but instead stuck in my head, on repeat. I thoroughly enjoyed the instrumental, the visuals and KUUMAA themselves. I feel like my score is a bit harsh, but the song doesn’t captivate me, and I almost don’t think it’s meant to? It’s perfect as is, and a lovely addition to this year’s line up.

Score: 7

Suzanne: I felt like I was at a Eurovision Party listening to this. So much fun! The artists really connect with the audience and draw me in.

Score: 6

We have removed the highest and lowest scores before calculating the result to weed out any potential bias.

The Wiwi Jury Average: 8.07

I’m with the majority here: I was underwhelmed at first, but the song really grew on me. It just gets stuck in your head and you randomly start blurting out Ylivoimainen at impossible times.

That being said, I don’t think it would do well in Eurovision. This song needs a few listens, and the average finale watcher won’t vote for it.

I love this song and I would be over the moon, but Finland deserves to do well and cha cha cha is their way to do that. Still, this would land them a top 15-20 if they made it to eurovision

Even then, I think they’d end up being this year’s Rosa Linn (being the most streamed song of the contest) if that ultimately happens lol

I won’t lie, I didn’t like this song at the first time, this was almost my last place (Yes the last was Portion Boys) but I listened it again and again and then it becames my first option to win UMK. KUUMA is a really good band with soft rhythm and meaning lyrics, but above all the members are so sweet, I already watched interviews and concert videos and they are so kind and humble. Even if in the ESC there are so many (and stronger) songs I think that KUUMA could be popular and memorable in their own way.

I would give it a 6.5 becuase it is not so great according to me. I would be happy if this got like 2nd or 3rd place but the winner would either be Käärijä or Benjamin. This song is still great tho

Finns think Benjamin is too over-the-top for them, they didn’t like him that much xd
Käärijä is the winner, unless his live show is disastrous

My winner tbh. But I’d be happy with any song winning UMK as long as it’s not Portion Boys.

I personally like «Ylivoimainen» the most but think «Cha Cha Cha» will do best of the two in Eurovision.

“Ylivoimainen” – Wow, what an incredible year for UMK. Finland is spoiled for choice when it comes to strong Eurovision entries, because here is another one. Okay, it’s an 80s sound again (Depeche Mode, A-ha), but the music in this song really works well. (If you are not a fan of music theory, look away now…) After a very short Intro, we get a nice Verse in E melodic minor with melodies driven by little rhythmical hooks. (There’s even one in the background at the end of each phrase, to help keep us listening.) When the Pre-Chorus comes, the melody’s… Read more »

Very interesting interpretation Purple. I’m not sure if it’s religious in an organized sort of way but I definitely feel spirituality in this track. There is something about the lyrics that speaks to a core essence of humanity driving a person forward – that’s certainly what it makes me feel anyway.

If the unthinkable happens and Käärija is not chosen- then please let it be this track- it has a bit of everything- ( even a little bit of As It Was from Harry Styles) . And let’s be honest here- whilst I love Käärija- he’s not singing much and when he does sing- it’s kind of auto tuned….. unlike this brilliant entry.

Contrary to what others have been saying, I was instantly hooked to this song. The first time i heard it I was sooo amazed that they could convey a sense of sadness and regret, all the while in a cool beat. I have this as my winner right now, but i think Kaarija Or Benjamin would be the most successful at Eurovision. I’m not really sure how Kuumaa would fare at esc. It could go either ways. But last time i had unrelenting hope in Finland that they would pick bess and instead we got the rasmus. So I’m not… Read more »

There’s so so much I could say about this song, feels so mysterious yet so relatable, it’s melancholic yet joyful and it has vintage elements while sounding so current. It’s my favorite song of this year’s UMK, I’ll even dare to say that it’s the best one of this NF season, and discovering Kuumaa was a great way to start this year. Now I find myself listening to their songs on the daily. Also, streaming-wise, it’s this year’s UMK’s most streamed song and it’s the only one so far that’s made it to #1 on the Finnish charts. Käärijä was… Read more »

This is the best song out of all the national finals this year. I would love it this won UMK and went on to represent Finland.

Eaea is great but it works best as a whole package (i.e., with the performance). If we’re talking about the song alone, Ylivoimainen is where it’s at.

My big favorite in this year’s UMK, would instantly become one of the greatest Finnish entries ever. Still hoping they can somehow pull it off.

It didn’t hit me straight away but boy has it grown on me. Probably my most played song on spotify this year so far. So nostalgic, yet I can’t stop humming along and wanting to dance to it. Love it so much. My number 1 of the NF season so far, and really hoping for them to travel to Liverpool. Best of luck tomorrow!

Oh wow, this song has well and truly suckered me. It is such a sad song. I’ve only hit rock bottom once in my life and this song absolutely and perfectly captures that intense feeling when there is only one road left and you reach the simple conclusion that it just has to be followed.

What talented people to trigger something so personal in a three minute pop song. A round of applause is heading your way.

Ylivoimainen is such a beautiful piece of music. Melancholic and uplifting at the same time, modern and throwback at the same time. The chorus has a really wonderful flow to it, and there’s a certain subtle edge in the instrumental. I love how enigmatic, yet relatable the lyrics are. Anyone could apply the sentiment for something or someone else. For my taste, this might be the winner, even if its ”grower quality” could be a risk for Finland. Nevertheless, this might be one of the best songs of this NF season, and who knows, maybe the live performance makes it… Read more »

Completely off topic but not sure where best to discuss. Just noticed Sweden has overtaken Ukraine in the odds this evening, that’s some serious movement since loreens snippet release and we haven’t even seen her perform it yet, exciting times!

ps also love Kuuma’s song.

The chorus has elements of another Finnish act Take On Me by Aha. Memorable, hummable, enjoyable. It’s my favorite of the upbeat songs.
