On Saturday evening Loreen and her song “Tattoo” was the first act announced in heat 4 of Melodifestivalen 2023 in Malmö to go directly into the final.

And less than two days later she has broken all streaming records of a Melfest entry on Spotify since the numbers went on record in 2017.

None of the previous years’ entries were streamed more than 200,000 times the day after being released on Spotify, but Loreen annihilated those numbers by being streamed 375,600 times on Sunday alone! That also meant “Tattoo” went straight to the #1 spot on the Swedish Top 50 chart.

The previous record for streams for a Melfest entry was held by John Lundvik – “Too Late For Love” in 2019, that also went to #1 with 191,960 streams. So Loreen almost doubled the 2019 winner in terms of streaming numbers.

Sweden love their Melfest entries this year, as Smash Into Pieces – “Six Feet Under” are at #2 with 197,701 streams and Norwegian twins Marcus & Martinus – “Air” take the #3 spot with 157,978 streams.

Other Melfest entries in the top 10 are THEOZ – “Mer av dig” at #5, Jon Henrik Fjällgren – “Where You Are (Sávežan)” at #8 and Panetoz – “On My Way” at #9.

Did you stream “Tattoo” already? Are there other Melfest songs you have been listening to in the past few days? Let us know in the comments below.

As a Swede it makes me unhappy to read hateful comments every year about how overrated sweden is. Can these people honestly not see that it is not to any advantage what so ever to compete for Sweden?

People always have high expectations on Sweden due to the absolute masterpieces that have been sent in the past. Tattoo is the best song in the competition this far, it is a great song. Juries will give it high points the fans will cry. People don’t want Sweden to win and to an extent I can understand it. Sweden is running laps around every other country and they can’t handle it. Loreen is having momentum and people are scared that she is going to win because they don’t want Stockholm 2024. The ONLY possible other contenders is Birdy for the… Read more »

The staging was cinematic. It was like a high budget movie (SVT resources( but the song itself is just bland. It doesn’t have the mindlowing effect and I don’t want to overhype songs just because of the singer.
I also don’t want to characterize songs as “Package for Eurovision”; I just want to vote for the song, not for the sake of Loreen’s popularity.

At the moment, I have only two wishes about Eurovision winners – not Loreen and not Ukraine. Supporting Ukraine to the fullest, but Heart of Steel is not winning material and would be NQ easily if it was for example Latvia, not Ukraine. Also, Loreen is the icon of Eurovision, but this song also wouldn’t catch anyone’s attention if it wasn’t her. I just want to see good songs win. Don’t want to see songs performing well because of the country they are from, or because they are sung by a famous singer. It just ruins the whole competition and… Read more »

It seems that fans think that a song shouldnt be overhyped just because of the popularity of its singer and I agree.
The flow of the song seems for me flat and the build-up that goes nowhere.
A generic, designed song, with good staging because without staging, the song doesnt stand out and just bleak.

I love Loreen’s artistry, I think her style of singing and voice itself can turn any bland song into a good one, but it still doesn’t change the fact that it is what it is – a bland song. That’s my exact problem with Tattoo. As much as I like the visual and vocal aspect of her performance, I just can’t see this winnig Eurovision in 2020’s. IMO her 2017 melfest bid Statements is miles ahead of Tattoo for a simple fact that it just feels more real, relevant and raw than this poppy average stuff. And the problem with… Read more »

The performance is very cool, The song is good, but not that great as I expected. With all the hype I was expected to be blown away, but really it’s a bit basic song with average lyrics. Staging team focused on the visual effects but seems that songwriters didn’t so much focus on the song.
I don’t want to hype the song due to Loreen sings it.

I am actually guilty. I have already listened to it like 500 times ! ?
I was afraid. I always think that songs from the Melodifestivalen are way too generic. And eventually the songs that represent Sweden too.
Then Cornelia happened. And now, probably Loreen.
Hold Me Closer and Tattoo are masterpieces.

Its so awful to think that sweden must send a song with fart sounds just for the approval.

I liked the performance, not the song itself which is quite simple with its average lyrics; chorus and melody. What I remember after listening and watching was simply some lightning and foggy effects; a singer singing an average song :/

It’s a nice enough song. … Probably, if you like that kind of music, … but it’s not growing me; especially the chorus. The performance was good but you know, it’s a matter of financing that visual effects, Led screens etc. Simple, a bit generic and gloomy song.

I think it is not always good to hype songs too much and comments also show that not all fans liked the song itself. Some websites like wiwibloggs, YouTube channels like “Vins” are always overhype Loreen as if that singer was sent as gift for the music. Just overhyping :/

I’ve listened to the studio version without looking at the performance and then watched the performance. Quite bland to be honest, while live the “Violins playing and angels crying” lyric sounds very… simple and a bit average.

I believe most of the hype comes from the stage performance. I am sure if Loreen sang “Voices” for instance (Sweden’s entry in 2021); Fans would have still overhyped it, saying “what a great song” :/

My view on“Tattoo” is that it is pretty bleak and dated, trying to make an updated version of a song which was out 11 years ago using mostly same instruments is not an idea which I find appealing. I also found the lyrics simple and average.

Loreen’s song is just a good visual performance; not a classy song and I also want another country win or be in top 3. I think Euoppharia could win without staging but Without that expensive visual effects; “Tattoo” is just okay song.

People complain about staging enhancing the song. But that is Loreen, with her it is never just about the song. She did the same with Euphoria. What would the song have been without her staging of it? Would it have won without staging? It was a ordinary house song anybody could have song. But it’s her staging of it that made it unique, same here. Same with any ESC song really, because the visuals are that important As for the lyrics, did Euphoria have better lyrics? A song about feeling euphoria and being with someone forever and ever. How deep!… Read more »

I always feel like I’d like Loreens songs more if they weren’t so hyped by the fans. They’re always in tha place where I like them well enough but at same time find myself looking sideways at the people are just hoping it too much.
The song is just average; with its simple chorus. I would be objective and for my Perspective, Loreen is not like “first among equals”; due to her popularity as former ESC winner and overhyping a singer is also unfair for other participating singers.

I heard “Tattoo” a few times now, and I still don’t get it… I sort of like it when I’m listening it, but just as the song gets going, the beat “stalls” oddly (don’t know how to better describe it). When it ends, I forget it almost instantly.

“Tattoo” is not a song which I want to listen, I am sorry I would be objective. The hype is just thanks to Loreen and expensive visually rich staging effectd; nothing more. Its chorus is flat; linear and lyrics are really surprisingly simple and these lyrics are written by professional Swedish songwriters :/

Loreen is not only about the song. She also competed in 2011, but was hardly remembered. In 2012 she had a very strong will about staging. Removing the lights. Just being backlit. Many things that enhanced the song. Also her vocals that made a mediocre house song into something else. Many here complain about the lyrics of Tatto, but was Euphoria better? It’s actually normally not a lyrics competition either. Anyway, I root for her in Melodifestivalen. That’s also her current situation. That’s why they talk about streaming numbers. I wonder how our attachments to certain songs would go if we were unaware of the massive hype which reaches this heights this early on. Because, in some cases, we could convince ourselves that the song that is this much hyped by everyone else must be good, and tag along because that’s what we are supposed to do. In other cases, we might get tired of a pretty good song easily because we find it exhausting of hearing how perfect it is all the time. I don’t understand all these negative comments about Sweden, I think they’ve got a really strong grand final this year with Loreen, Marcus and Martinus and Smash into Pieces just to name a few. I get why people might think Loreen is being overhyped right now as she hasn’t even been selected yet and we still haven’t heard all of the songs or seen the stage performances for Eurovision this year so other countries could still surprise, but I wish people would still appreciate the effort that Sweden always puts in every year to their national final.

Anything and everything positive about Sweden’s entries gets massive amounts of downvotes and negative replies, that’s just how it is. It started back in 2012 and every year since it has just gotten worse. Comments and downvotes here so far though hasn’t been reflected on the actual results so it’s obvious that the small group of ESC fans who seemingly always hate on the Swedish entries here do not share the opinions of the majority of other ESC viewers and voters so people shouldn’t take it too seriously.
