It was over a month ago that the live auditions for Moldova’s Etapa Naţională 2023 took place. The ten acts who made it to the grand final have been busy preparing to impress the Moldovan public on Saturday.

In the meantime, we asked our international readers to share their thoughts and vote for the act they would like to wave the Moldovan flag at Eurovision 2023.

After receiving 1,997 votes, we can present the results of our poll.

Pasha Parfeni a favourite to win Etapa Naţională 2023

The top three is full of Eurovision alumni. But the one who rose to the number one spot is Eurovision 2012 star Pasha Parfeni.

Pasha is hoping to return to the contest in 2023 with the thumping folk-pop song “Soarele şi luna”. And many of y’all want to see him in Liverpool as well. The Moldovan singer won this poll in a strong fashion, picking up 43.92% of the vote — that’s 877 votes.

In second place is Moldova’s Eurovision 2013 representative Aliona Moon. A decade since she defied gravity in Malmö, Aliona is back in the national selection with the dark alternative-pop ballad “Du-mă”.

There’s a good number of people who would love to see Aliona back at Eurovision. She picked up 449 votes in our poll, which is 22.48% of the total.

Sunstroke Project pick up the bronze medal in this poll. The group have previously appeared at Eurovision on two occasions — in 2010 and 2017 — achieving Moldova’s best ever result with their latter entry. If they made it back to Eurovision in 2023 with “Yummy Mommy”, this would be the first time they appeared at the contest as a duo (violin player Anton Ragoza left the group in 2018).

Sergei Yalovitsky and Sergey Stepanov are a fair way behind the front two when it comes to our poll. The pair secured 284 votes (14.22%).

Full results: Who should win Moldova’s Etapa Naţională 2023?

  1. Pasha Parfeni – “Soarele şi luna” – 43.92%, 877 votes

Just listened to all the 10 songs, only really disliked 1 ( Nordika), and the 3 in moldavian are simply stunning. Now I am curious to check them out live. Definitely going to watch the finale, unlike Iceland’s ( looooved Dadi Freyr, but this year none of the songs crossed my path)

Moldova just voted the “Moldavian language” syntagm out, their language is to be officially called Romanian.

Pasha and Alina are better. And Sunstroke Project do not have a strong entry this time.

Regardless if it is Pasha or Aliona representing Moldova, they will jump immediately to my top 3

Of the top 3 I agree that Pasha’s song is the best, although it does sound a bit like Kalush. And Aliona’s song sounds a bit like Pasha’s in places. Not a fan of Sunstroke’s song, a bit ghastly. So of this interesting EuroStars battle I’d go for Mr Parfeni, perhaps it will be someone new.

I like the top 2, prefer Pasha’s music slightly but since his song is a lyrical vacuum (maybe he can’t remember lyrics) I’d vote for Aliona. Nice to have them both in local language and happy with either in Liverpool.

Okay… my favourite without a doubt is Aliona Moon, I love her ethnic song with her vocals. At the same time, I think with both Aliona and Pasha, Moldova will definitely qualify for the grand final

Unfortunately, its SunStrokeProject because are Famous in Moldova … And because With live auditions, they are first and I think are the winner.

SunStrokeProject have a good song, very energetic & modern but very generic … But I think with them, Moldova will be in the final.

But Pasha Parfeni IS better !

How can a song be both modern and generic?

radio friendly songs are modern and therefore ultra generic because we hear them every day on the radio or elsewhere and the songs nowadays are like that.

I really can’t get that a song is modern & generic at the same time. A generic song is in my book a song that you could hear many years ago, while a modern song is a type of song that suits the times right now, with modern rythms.

For me it’s good that songs considered “old” are coming back nowadays, because it proves that music is universal and that it’s not just modernity that counts too.

Apples and oranges. Modern’s opposition is dated or vintage, generic’s opposition is innovative or unique. Moreover, none of the four options guarantee it to be a good or a bad song.
