The Eurovision 2012 champion is back. Loreen is the winner of Melodifestivalen and will sing “Tattoo” for Sweden at Eurovision 2023 in Liverpool.

After a thrilling six weeks, the Swedish public named Loreen their pick for Eurovision. The “Euphoria” hitmaker claimed her second Melfest trophy, beating out Norwegian twin stars Marcus & Martinus and Ukrainian singer Maria Sur amongst others.

Loreen won both the public televote and the jury vote.

Sweden Eurovision 2023: Loreen wins Melodifestivalen with “Tattoo”

Twelve acts competed in the Melodifestivalen 2023 final.

  1. Jon Henrik Fjällgren, Arc North feat. Adam Woods — “Where You Are (Sávežan)”
  2. Tone Sekelius — “Rhythm of My Show”
  3. Mariette — “One Day”
  4. Marcus & Martinus — “Air”
  5. Panetoz — “On My Way”
  6. Maria Sur — “Never Give Up”
  7. Smash Into Pieces — “Six Feet Under”

  9. Nordman — “Släpp alla sorger”
  10. Loreen — “Tattoo”
  11. Theoz — “Mer av dig”
  12. Paul Rey — “Royals”

Results

The grand final results were determined by a 50-50 split of jury votes and public votes. Eight international juries — consisting of music professionals — ranked their favourites and award 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10 and 12 points in traditional Eurovision style.

Public votes via the Melfest app are split by seven age groups: 3-9, 10-15, 16-29, 30-44, 45-59, 60-74 and 75+. Votes via telephone fall into their own category. After the jury voting sequence, points from all eight public voting groups were pooled together, with each artist finding out their public voting score one by one.

Loreen won the international jury vote with 92 points, receiving the maximum 12 points from seven out of eight juries. The Croatian jury awarded their 12 points to Theoz.

Loreen also won the public televote, scoring 85 points.

Jury vote

  1. Loreen — “Tattoo” — 92 points
  2. Marcus & Martinus — “Air” — 71 points
  3. Paul Rey — “Royals” — 56 points

I love this song. Especially Daft Punk’s version (and Madonna’s violins are a nice touch. ) Why is she always allowed to sing in dim light,? Lip synching again?

Gorgeous song, definitely the jury winner. But not the overall and public vote winner in Liverpool. Finland will win the public vote with a landslide: Europe will dance all summer long the cha cha cha.

The Sweden loving juries will destroy Finland’s chances. Not that I am a fan of the Fi nish entry, just the juries always vote heavily for Sweden and pretentiousness generally. The only hope of stopping Loreen’s familiar dirge feom winning is Ukraine am afraid, assuming they get another huge wave of public votes.

I think the staging is the real hero here. The LED screens are gorgeous. For me personally the song isn’t special although I think Loreen is a great performer. The way she was acting at the after party seemed a bit arrogant tho.

https://www.tiktok.com/@markuslarssonfanclub/video/7209442876806204678?_r=1&_t=8aaMvnKEkMA The DJ said that they first had a misunderstanding and he didn’t realise Loreen wanted to sing her song once again. It then took him some time to get it on and you can hear her being quite rude. She then goes on to tell the DJ to put it louder but the DJ has said it was the tech people not him who could do that.

Love the song. Love the performance.

Curious about the negativity. I spend zero time thinking about the songs I don’t like. And I would never imagine commenting on then and try to bring others down..

The reason I love Eurovision is the amazing mix of genres and artistry. The fact that I this year love Sweden, France, Czech Republic, Austria, etc. Last year, that list was different. Next year it’ll be different. Why focus on an artist or song you don’t like? Honestly do not understand it.

It’s mostly the hardcore fans that does it. Sweden is considered the best at eurovision by a lot of fans, which means their entries are set at a very high standard. Expectations are higher for Sweden than for other eurovision countries. Thus, they recieve as much critisism as they recieve praise, even if comment sections on wiwibloggs might tell otherwise.

I appreciate your comment, and I understand exactly what you mean.

But, I just want to make clear that I actually am a hardcore fan. 🙂

Loving this contest doesn’t mean that you have to retort to spewing hate on any song/artist/country you don’t personally appreciate. I have a long list of songs this year that I don’t care for, I have no desire to go on forums and be negative about them.

Eurovision would be so much more fun if people enjoyed it for what it is.

Kolan Bränn

I don’t have any statistics, but I’m fairly certain that the vast majority of people who watch eurovision enjoy it for what it is.

What I mean by hardcore fans is people who follow the national finals, talk about the entries in detail, song, lyrics, what fits, doesn’t fit, works, doesn’t work, compare them to other songs and entries and previous entries. The nitpicky ones.

Eurovision stopped being just about the song long ago. Now it’s about the overall package and what leaves the best impact.

Thallo

I watched Melodifestivalen in Sweden with some friends who hate Eurovision on Saturday. Everyone talked during the whole show, but when Loreen came on, they were transfixed by her performance. Even though they didn’t care about the show, they were backing Loreen to win.

I think Europe will have the same response in May. Loreen brings a sense of familiarity to Europeans, we know her as the girl who sang Euphoria, but now she’s going to be known as the girl who won Eurovision twice.

For Mika Newton’s song, there is indeed a part of the melody which is very similar but the notes still aren’t the same and it doesn’t correspond to the definition of plagiarism. Loreen and her team did nothing wrong, the song is perfectly valid 🙂 Don’t know where you want to go with your comment but it’s now time to turn this page.

I think Madonna’s ‘Frozen’ is an influence on Loreen generally. ‘Frozen’ was influenced by a Moroccan film called ‘The Sheltering Sky’ and it’s all about icy deserts, sad love and spirituality. Loreen is ethnically Moroccan so maybe there’s some cross-over there.

I have listened to “Tattoo” three times already, and I am yet unable to remember the chorus Loreen was singing about. Or the melody of the song itself, for that matter. I think success in Eurovision is linked a lot to first impressions: 1) if the audience can mimic the song the first time they hear it, and 2) if the song will stick after the next performance is done. Obviously, that is not always the case (Greece in 2022 finished in 8th place without a memorable chorus), but this facto certainly can elevate things. I have tried to look… Read more »

The day after last years Swedish final with Cornelia Jacobs winning I was sure we were going to Sweden this year, she ‘only’ ended fourth in ESC, something that still wonders me. One never knows. Maybe alot of jury-members will agree with fans who see «Tattoo» as a bland copy of «Euphoria»? Maybe they agree with those who thinks this is the full package in every way? Maybe it will be a mixture, and if so: is that enough to win? Will the public watching the final be disappointed it’s not a new «Euphoria» and not vote for it, even… Read more »

For me, Loreen deserves a good result – maybe Top 3 – but not the win. In any case I prefer Tattoo over Hold me closer.

90 % of viewers probably will not know about Euphoria . A whole new generation out there
And why would juries care about Euphoria? Their job is to compare it to the other competing songs

I think it is both a jury and public pleaser especially in such a weak year. Unfortunately the excitement this year is who will be 2nd

Tattoo is mediocre at best.. nothing special, she is barefoot again (she did that), she has minimal staging (done that), weird hand gestures (done that) and I dare to say she is screaming again with none clear signs of singing..

She is repeating herself a lot..

What a nonsense reply. How could he repeat a comment from 2012 which complained about repeating things from 2012?

The thing is: we in the fandom are all comparing this to Euphoria, but how many people outside of the fandom will actually remember that even existed? And there’s no denying this is an impressive performance. Juries will also eat this up

I’m not sure I’d call a gigantic Panini Press minimal. The staging looks spectacular on TV and will stand out from everything else.

I just don’t get the hype around this song. I’ve tried to listen to it several times but I still don’t remember the melody. Loreen is stuck in her euphoria times and she isn’t bringing anything new to the Eurovision stage. I don’t think anyone can pull Jhonny Logans anymore.

It won, but actually a small margin in Sweden.
Only issue is tattoo is made for Eurovision fans, it’s produced on a mediocre song, with everything in the act and vision. It’s professional, nothing unique in it. The same producers and acter could do it over next year. I think unique and good should win. Finland, Norway, Austria even.
Just don’t let it fool ya, this is a million dollar production professional in every way, and they can do that again and again….

Mixing pop, with viking age feeling, and a throw in of high end voice and a compelling addictive chorus, unique is maybe too much, but it has compelling attributes.

It has certain small attributes to it that sets it apart from being a full out regular schlager song, I’ll give you that.

As for Austria, they are different, but different isn’t alwats good. I mean, come on, their song title is just laughable.

I do, however, agree about Finland.

Mixing pop with viking is what Denmark did already in 2018 and much more authentic to that.
This is what someone from Italy or somewhere thinks viking pop sounds like. It is viking in the same way KeeiNo was Sami..

Bold of you to trash other countries when Sweden basically does the same formula over and over again.

Trash other countries? I was merely expressing my agreements and disagreements with one of the writers. Sweden isn’t the only country that “sends the same formula”, by the way. Pop music and schlager music are long engrained in the swedish culture, so it makes sense that a lot of swedes like it and that it’s the main focus in the swedish music industry. The swedes vote for what they like just as all other national slections. It isn’t the same thing every time either. The Mamas, Cornelia and Loreen being female artists which fans have been nagging about for years.… Read more »

I will keep saying it but Loreen is a phenomenal performer, her voice is stunning and her stage presence is incredible but the song does absolutely nothing for me, I hope this isn’t our clear winner as it would be really disappointing.

Despite the odds, I don’t think this has the unquestionable winner vibe that Stefania or Arcade had. I wouldn’t be surprised if a “dark horse” won this year. Could be Spain, could be Finland, could even be Slovenia.

If at some points the odds reach an abysmal 50%, I’m really pessimistic that they’ll also dictate the final result in May. We all want “dark horses” to win this time. Let this be the first tike since 2018 that the winner’s odds were wrong at their guess.

Grows on me week by week!” 90% of ESC voters in final will at best listen to the song 1 time during the show. Another 5% might remember it from a respective semifinal.

I love them so much! To be honest, it wasn’t until seeing their live performance that I really saw it for the Brit-Pop banger it is. They’ll do really well this year. Would love to see them win. Would be equally happy with Finland or Spain or Czechia.
