Australia at Eurovision 2023: Voyager with “Promise”

Voyager are a five-piece progressive metal band consisting of Daniel Estrin on vocals and keytar, Simone Dow and Scott Kay on guitars, Alex Canion on bass and vocals and Ashley Doodkorte on drums.

The band formed in 1999 and have released seven studio albums through several lineup changes. Voyager participated in Australia Decides with the song “Dreamer” in 2022, finishing second behind Sheldon Riley. Despite falling short, the band won the public vote and will now realise their Eurovision dream 12 months later.

Eurovision has always been a passion for the band, putting their names forward ever since Australia joined the contest in 2015. Singer Daniel Estrin said: “As a long-time Eurovision fan, this is the pinnacle – Voyager gets to play the greatest show on earth! Our song Promise is made for the Eurovision stage and collectively we feel it’s one of our best yet. We filmed the music video in both the city of Perth and beautiful parts of Western Australia to showcase the majestic beauty of our home state. Eurovisionation, we are coming!!!”

What do the “Promise” lyrics mean?

“Promise” is described as “an epic, progressive pop metal track that transports the listener on an emotive story of adventure and redemption”. The song puts the voyage in Voyager, with a journey distinctly on the cards. This is mirrored in the music video, which showcases Voyager’s home state of Western Australia.

As Daniel sings “If you’ve never done anything like this before, then you haven’t been alive”, he prompts the listener to come along on this wild ride. The song asks a series of questions, such as “Have you ever just walked out on your own?” and “Have you ever just lost your mind?”, creating a connection with the listener and provoking some thought.

Throughout the chorus, they sing “Promise me you’ll hold me ’til I die” and “Promise me it’s gonna be alright” which form the crux of the message and are repeated several times throughout the song.

Voyager — “Promise” lyrics (Australia Eurovision 2023)

Have you ever done anything like this before?
Have you ever done anything like this before?
If you’ve never done anything like this before
Then you haven’t been alive
Have you ever shut all the open doors?
Have you ever just walked out on your own?
Have you ever just lost your mind
When you try to unwind?
Or are you coming right back for more?

I’m here tonight
Promise mе you’ll hold me ’til I die
I’m by your side
Promisе me it’s gonna
Promise me it’s gonna be alright

Oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh
Promise me it’s gonna be alright
Oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh
Promise me it’s gonna be alright
Promise me it’s gonna be alright

Have you ever been alone too much?
Have you ever prayed for human touch?
Have you ever just lost a little part of you
To find a little something new?

Cross my heart ’til the sky turns red in the sunrise
Since you told me everything’s alright

Oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh
Since you told me everything’s alright
Oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh
Promise me it’s gonna be al… Right!
I’m here tonight
Promise me you’ll hold me ’til I die
I’m by your side
Promise me it’s gonna
Promise me it’s gonna
Promise me it’s gonna be alright

Alright
Cross my heart ’til the sky turns red in the sunrise
Promise me it’s gonna be alright
Be alright
Alright

I don’t mind that the lyrics are simple because you can project lots of different scenarios on to them. The opening in fact invites us to do that (have you ever, this, that or the other). It’s general to start off with, then becomes specific – ‘I’. This person needs reassurance – a promise. His/her request is answered – support is given (since you told me). Basic but important stuff – if we are talking about friendship or love. I think it’s great how the music actually delivers the promise – shows solidarity, being together for each other – like… Read more »

Could this be the ‘dark horse/ Tamara Todevska’ of ESC23? Every year has had a dark horse and maybe, just maybe this is it.

Despite the initial wow factor from obvious front runners of the likes of Finland, it’s Voyager’s song that has slowly but surely grown and firmly worked its way into my head and refuses to let go. It’ll never win but I think they’ll pick up a new European fan base of this. Highly underrated song.

I’ve been immersing myself in their back catalogue- they are a *seriously* good band. Fabulous instrumental skill, bags of musical and lyrical hooks, and that twin guitar attack lover some massive rhythms.

Underrated, if Loreen sung it, it would be first in the odds.
