Brunette has been keeping her cards close to her chest since being revealed as Armenia’s act for Eurovision 2023. But now her hand has been dealt and we finally get to hear her entry for the contest, “Future Lover”.

Brunette – “Future Lover”

Upon the reveal, Armenia’s head of delegation — David Tserunyan — said he was looking forward to showcasing a bright new star from Armenia:

“For the second year in a row, we are excited to use this opportunity and lead the path for young and talented singer-songwriters from Armenia to the world’s biggest stage – the Eurovision Song Contest! Brunette is a true artist, with a very unique style and energy, that is transmitted through her every single performance. I’m confident she will make us all proud and find her place in the hearts of millions of Eurofans, just like she did in ours.”

Who is Brunette?

Brunette is a relatively new and up-and-coming act with several songs under her belt. This includes the chilled lounge track “Smoke Break”, clocking in 3.5 million views on YouTube.

At the time of Brunette’s announcement as Armenia’s Eurovision 2023 singer, Executive Director of AMPTV – Armenia’s broadcaster – Hovhannes Movsisyan advised that going for a younger, fresher act was part of their game plan. This is especially after the commercial success of Rosa Linn’s “Snap” since Eurovision 2022. On the selection of Brunette he said:

“Last year, sending a young artist to Eurovision was justified. The song is still successful and captivates millions of fans. I hope this year we will surprise the European audience with a unique Armenian artist.”

What are your first impressions of “Future Lover”? Can Brunette deliver another strong result for Armenia at Eurovision? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

I’m seeing claims that Brunette lifted the first two verses from Tumblr blogs, and–if true– this is exactly the kind of authorial distance I needed for this song to work for me.

Mild and forgettable unfortunately, I don’t see this as a clear finalist, when there are several songs that could go above this one. For now I wouldn’t put this on my list of qualifiers.

Finally something really decent. And some healthy competition to Tatoo, at least quality-wise. Not commenting on authenticity, as this war is forever lost this year, and possibly for ever in the ESC, with some very honorable exceptions.

Well, this song is interesting, and I would say a quality entry. On the other hand, it seems it was overhyped by the public and the bookies, similar to Israel.

I can see both songs ending in the top 10, but also flopping. It should be a safe qualifier of course, but I don’t think this is a real contender to make something memorable, especially not fighting for the win.

This is the most interesting song of the year. Really cool . if it wasn’t for Loreen, I would say this is the winner for me . I didn’t like Armenian song at all last year . i prefer when they experiment musically .plus they always create super edgy videos.

Can’t remember a single time when the fandom liked Armenia’s ding after it was dropped. Please check all the posts from recent years. Then somehow people say Armenia is a successful contender. How? I appreciate how one girl composed music, dances, sings well and has jazzy voice.

I am kind of baffled about how little appreciation these touching, poetic lyrics get…

Knowing her backcatalogue of loungy, jazzy tones mixed with Armenian harmonies, I was afraid she would be handed an alienating pop song. Thankfully, this did not happen. the song is more like an evolution in itself:
It’s starts off like a typical Brunette-song and then evolves into something really impactful. I would say, it definitely written for the stage.

Anyone familiar with the mid 2010s ESC history will know that this isn’t Armenia’s first dive into the music puzzles that combine multiple styles. They’ve done so in 2016 and 2017 too, with the former being my favorite Armenian entry to date. In its own way, Future Lover gives its own spin, and I think I really like it. It feels elegant and sonically full. I really like the rap parts too, as they give it an additional oomph. I’ll have to translate the lyrics in Armenian, but they sound great. The lyrics have this nostalgic / hopeful tone, and… Read more »

Unless Andrew really crashes vocally, Cyprus will qualify. Being second to Loreen in the GF is, however, highly unlikely. 12th-16th range feels plausible so far.

Of course. People often overlook the importance of having a good presentation in the eyes of casual watchers who are listening to it for the first time. Fair or not, even things like outfits and camera angles can make a difference. Until we see the rehearsals, the qualifier list on the betting odds is to be taken with a lot of salt.

Tibor

I have the complete opposite impression. Nobody overlooks presentation, I feel as if people rather treat the songs as some minor detail without real importance.

I mostly meant us in the bubble. People like the song, and then overlook the importance the presentation has on everyday listeners. From first hand I’ve heard people commenting on wardrobe, choreography, and styling before they even notice the song. That’s the main reason I’m wary about the (much beloved and pushed among fans) 100% televoting. In the end, I do think that most of the best songs do get noted, but stellar staging can push mediocre songs to score above their belt, and bland staging can ruin chances of great songs, especially slower ones.

I also mean the bubble (I’m not saying “us”, because, as you know, I’m definitely not part of that particular faction). I see people talking more about staging, styling and camera angles than about music.

I like the sentiment of the lyrics and the thought behind them. On the one hand, she’s talking about reading books, visiting old bookstores, drinking smoothies (or tea) in cafes, and doing simple cute things. That all sounds nice, future lover. But it’s not real, it’s just a daydream. She might have great plans and lots of cool things to do, but she just wants the daydream of this idyll. She wants poetry and art, but the city just gives her panic attacks (she’s been reading Virgina Woolf). Some nice ideas here, and her rap turns out to be the… Read more »

I do also like the Armenian lyrics with the strings at the climax of the song. The slow-motion levitation in the music video backed by an orchestra feels inspired by the Wachowskis.

It’s nice to see Armenia trying different things, even if the song does seem to be a splice of several distinct parts, some a bit generic and some more experimental.

The “impossible plans” she mentions seem quite modest to me. My wish for her is that she grows to realise that a “future lover” is not necessary to achieve them. If one comes along, great, but don’t feel the need to wait for them.

Is that something to judge her on? It doesn’t bother me if she wants to look good, though hopefully it’s for herself, rather than anyone else.

Ideally, it’s the content of what we say that would matter most, but we are visual creatures too 🙂

Also, not everyone can just “decide” to look good. The lyric about that is nonsense.

Look your best? Sure. But “looking good” is not achievable for everyone (and also subjective to a degree) and while surely preferable to most, ultimately not truly necessary.

She’s not denying that it’s possible for her to go to the bookstores and cafes with her friends or on her own. What she’d like to do is go with this person she hasn’t met…but they’ve not met yet, so it’s impossible.

Perhaps she’s singing from the point of view of an artificial intelligence trapped inside a matrix. It’s literally impossible for her to go walking down the streets with a future lover, and that’s why she’s having panic attacks inside the neural network she’s imprisoned in.

Some countries are trying to be a bit more experimental this year, clearly. Although, i’d say it’s been rather hit or miss. Can’t tell how I feel about this one. It kinda reminds me of “Walking Out”, but this one more authentical to Brunette I guess. Is it a contender to win? Of course not. Will be this song in the top 10? I doubt that. But good luck!

There was so much hype for Armenia but the end result is disappointing. That’\s why broadcasters should not keep fans waiting for so long because the hype is crazy and there is always disappointment. First, I don’t understand what she is singing about, she needs to improve her diction. Then, the key change in 1:30 is bizarre and it takes forever. It doesn’t stick to your mind and it’s giving Noa Kire’s Unicorn vibes. Brunette is stunning so I think she will save the song by giving a great performance. After having time to properly digest this song, I really really REALLY like this one. After the admittedly questionable first minute of the song (those lyrics feel very awkward), it really kicks into high gear and reaches out of this world levels for me. Ending with the climax in Armenian was a really smart move and managed to take the song even higher than the high level it was already at.
