Cyprus at Eurovision 2023: Andrew Lambrou with “Break a Broken Heart”
Andrew Lambrou, whose grandparents hail from Paphos, Cyprus, and Lemnos, Greece, first came into the spotlight 2013 after uploading song covers on Youtube. Two years later, he auditioned for The X Factor Australia at age 17, managing to make it into the top 20.
He was signed by Sony ATV in 2017 and then into City Pop Records a couple of years later. Eagle-eyed Eurovision followers will recognise him for placing seventh in Australia Decides 2022 with the club bop “Electrify”.
What do the “Break a Broken Heart” lyrics mean?
“Break a Broken Heart” features the songwriting talents of Jimmy Jansson, Jimmy “Joker” Thornfeldt, Marcus Winther-John and Thomas Stengaard, who Eurovision fans will recognise from their various Melodifestivalen contributions. It is worth noting that Mattias Bylund worked on the song’s arrangement, known for winning a Grammy for his work on Taylor Swift’s album 1989.
The song illustrates one-sided toxic relationship. However, the affected party is motivated to overcome this low point in his life and rise even stronger than before.
Andrew said: “It’s a song about relationships that end heartbroken, but they might very well push us to rise again from the ashes, even stronger”.

Songwriters: Jimmy Jansson, Jimmy “Joker” Thornfeldt, Marcus Winther-John, Thomas Stengaard
Woo-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
The lights went out
I hit the ground
You didn’t mind that I was bleeding out
You filled my life
With minor songs
I loved you but you loved to do me wrong
I miss your kiss, gasoline and a matchstick
Red lights, flashes, rising out of the ashes
Oh, I see you
For who you are
But you can’t break, a broken heart
You lift me up and leave me in the gutter
And tear me up and move on to another
I’m torn apart but I am a survivor
You can’t, you can’t break a broken heart
Woo-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
You can’t break a broken heart
Woo-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
An all-time low
But I’ll get by
And over you I’ll find the highest high
You did your best
To do your worst
I got used to all the ways it hurt
Feel the fever telling me that I need her
Science fiction turning into an addiction
Oh, I see you
For who you are
But you can’t break, a broken heart
You lift me up and leave me in the gutter
And tear me up and move on to another
I’m torn apart but I am a survivor
You can’t, you can’t break a broken heart
Woo-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
You can’t break a broken heart
Woo-ooh-ooh
Oh I miss your kiss, gasoline and a matchstick
Red lights, flashes, rising from the ashes
You lift me up and leave me in the gutter
And tear me up and move on to another (to another)
I’m torn apart but I am a survivor
You can’t break a
Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah
You can’t break a broken heart
Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah
You can’t, you can’t break a broken heart
You can’t, you can’t, you can’t break a broken heart
You can’t, you can’t break a broken heart (Oh…)
You can’t
You can’t break a broken heart
Are you rooting for Cyprus’s song? Do you think it’ll sail to the grand final? Let us know in the comments down below!
Pros: handsome, good song, nice music video, nice voice.
Cons: He lacks charisma on stage, I didn’t like the parts with the high voice in the song.
I think it will be top 15 or top 10 even…
As lyrics go, this year has largely brushed aside the need for cohesive storytelling in favour of musical expression and earworms. This song is really solidly produced, but when you read the lyrics on the page, and looks like they are cheering how you can’t break a broken heart by going “woo-ho”, when actually the pain of the song is quite evident in the music of the chorus. More to come in the Wiwi Jury, if there is one this year.
There has been one every year so far. Why are you putting that in question each time you mention it? (Wiwi Jury, that is)
I agree that this year has one or two songs with lazy (Ireland) or confusing (Georgia) lyrics, but Cyprus seems good to me. I interpret it as a defense mechanism. He pretends to be okay, because he knows he has to go through with it, but it still hurts. That’s how I see it. Hope it makes sense. 🙂
“Break a Broken Heart” could be about denial. I think the answers are in the music itself rather than the lyrics. Ah, the power of songwriting. 🙂
I figure that the more times I can mention it, the more that I can encourage its continuation. As I recall, the Wiwi Jury was a challenge to organise in the past, quite understandably. There has also been some concerns that the Jury is taken too seriously as a “judgment”, and in this environment of growing toxicity I would understand if it were cut this year. Even if it doesn’t continue, I hugely admire the many people that put it together for so many years.
I completely understand, and I’d like to encourage it too. It’s a really nice tradition. Thanks for explaining.
One of the only ‘pop’ songs in the semi and it’s a good one!
I currently predict Cyprus to be the “surprise” NQ of this year, because the positive reactions online may mostly be down to people just finding him attractive?
Attractive? He is Hot as hell. I Hope he sings shirtless….
No, it’s an excellent song and people at home also have eyes.
I know that 35 songs competing this year don’t matter, because it’s all about Cha-Cha-Cha and Loreen, but I Cyprus and Czechia are the ones that really made a difference to me. Both feel genuine and both carry emotions. Andrew’s one is very simple but authentic, making a listener resonate with the story behind it. Vesna’s one is a masterpiece, both lyrically and especially video-wise. I am just hoping that 200 million viewers will see the real art beneath the surface dominated by a generic “Eurovision-like” stuff.
Wiwi people if you ban me from here just BC i declare i wanna f… Make LOVE to him, you are only showing you are all Hungarian…. Hahahahahaha
You can’t just speak about people in a demeaning, filthy way and then scream “homophobia!” when people call you out for it. We should have respect for others and respect for ourselves.
Woah, there are a lot of points on which I disagree but diversity of opinions is part of the show. I agree on the fact that this song is a bit uninspired but I still find it really good and underrated by fans. If Andrew is able to pull those high notes with power, than the performance could be memorable and easily end up in the top 10. I disagree with your point of view on the song from Belgium. Gustaph’s song is weak when compared to the global level of the competition but it seems far from being the… Read more »
I wanna make LOVE to him
I cannot break a Broken heart but i could break other parts of his anatomy.
Cringe
Homophobic much?
Disrespectful much?
Man It is just normal that a man wants to have sex with another man… Please get out of ur little village in Hungary.
I’m gay too… I also find some celebrities really hot but I’m not here saying I want to have sex with them. I find it really weird when people say those kind of things. It’s like people going on the instagram account of strangers (celeb or not) and writing dirty things. It’s disrespectful and it seems a bit desperate.
Please add about 20 points from Australia and Denmark.
UK and Cyprus have an old relationship too…
