Some countries dream about the opportunity of reaching the Eurovision grand final. For another five, it’s a reality they get to live every year. The Big 5 – Spain, Italy, France, United Kingdom and Germany – automatically have a spot in the grand final of Eurovision 2023 due to their financial contribution to the contest.

But with great privilege comes even higher expectations. The Big 5 have had split fortunes at the contest of late and 2022 was no exception — the UK, Spain and Italy were up at the top of the scoreboard, whilst France and Germany found themselves right at the bottom.

For Eurovision 2023, each of these countries will be hoping to land at the top end of leaderboard. But which of them do you think has a chance of doing so?

We want to hear from you. Remind yourself of the entries each of the Big 5 are sending to this year’s contest. Then scroll down to vote for your favourites in our poll.

Big 5 acts at Eurovision 2023

France: La Zarra – “Évidemment

Germany: Lord of the Lost – “Blood & Glitter”

Italy: Marco Mengoni – “Due Vite”

Spain: Blanca Paloma – “Eaea”

United Kingdom: Mae Muller – “I Wrote A Song”

Poll: Which Big 5 country has the best entry at Eurovision 2023?

In this poll you can vote for as many of the Big 5 as you would like. However, you can only vote once – so choose wisely!

Who did you vote for? Do you think a Big 5 victory is on the cards for Eurovision 2023? Let us know down below in the comments.

The Big 5 are this year stronger than most times. Usually Italy is high in my ranking, but this year UK and Italy are the ones I like not so much. They are still good songs. Surprisingly this year my own country Germany has my first place. I came to love the song and even more the band, which has such a diverse and beautiful back catalogue and are so nice and empathic guys. The second place for me is a tie between France and Spain, can’t really decide. They are both unique and there is no question which country… Read more »

I’m Italian and a fan of Marco’s since he made himself known at X Factor many years ago. He’s really a great artist who released many beautiful songs in the past years, but this song “Due vite” no no no no no… I hoped he was going to change it, he was the first one to understand that it doesn’t suit Eurovision at all, but in the end he decided to sing that one…mah! I don’t understand and don’t approve this choice. If he comes ninth or tenth it will be only thanks to his ability as a vocalist, because… Read more »

Easy Spain!!
Italy is another italian ballad. France and UK are well produced songs that cannot replicated on live. And Germany isnt a great song.

Blanca Paloma is also a scenographer and knows exactly how to use the Lights. And people dont vote for the sound. Vote for the performance, the voice and sometimes the lyrics. And Eaeaea excell in these 3 areas better.

You are so right. I think that Blanca has planned a really good performance, also the stage fits perfectly for what she wants to do.

I know I’m the lone wolf here. Spain’s performance is pure art. But when I try to put the lyrics and the performance together I just can’t make it work. Everyone else seems to be able to but me. Instead of down voting me, can someone help me understand?

It’s interesting, because the songs really are totally different styles from each other, and ultimately the poll scores are pretty close. There are of course also all the other songs to take into account, but I believe that this year there will be suspense until the end and that the victory will be decided with few points.

Spain is by far the best imo, original, haunting, ethnic, with stunning vocals.

France is ok, not a huge fan of it though. Same goes for Italy.

UK I don’t like at all, not a fan of generic, soulless pop. Germany too, I usually like heavier sounds, but I’m just not feeling this one.

Four are in my top10; in order:
Germany 7 pts – my husband will rate this 37th!
UK/France – they are the two that are most in my head 3 or 4 pts
Spain 1pt

Italy – not my type of song, down in mid-teens.

The big 5 have done well this year and I like them all, but for the poll I chose Spain and Italy. I’m spell-bound by Spain’s powerful, dark and mysterious song and seduced by the melancholy loveliness of Italy. I find both entries mesmerising, and they are jostling for position in my personal top 5.

I’d be happy with Blanca Paloma as a winner. I appreciate Marco and La Zarra, but they’re just below my top tier. Lord of the Lost are good for Germany. UK is absolutely not my thing.

Italy, UK, France, Spain – 12 points (fresh, quality, modern)

Germany – „I am sorry Germany, 0 points” (very poor copy of Lordi, dated, kitschy, badly produced). It’s sad that 82-million nation cannot send a decent quality song and finishes last every year… maybe they should send any German-Turkish artist if they don’t have any nice German acts??? At least they would gain lots of points of Turkish diaspora 🙂

There’s no brainwashing. There are many Spanish fans and many “alternative” obsessed fans that like to bash all mainstream pop and praise everything that is different. I’m not a fan of “Eaea” either but I respect the artistry and the authenticity.

I don’t get the hype over this big 5. Only UK is in my top 10 and only because it is radio friendly (the quality of the song is questionnable).
France and Spain are between my 10th and 15th place. Italy and Germany are not even in my top 20 although I recognize the qualities of the italian song, it’s just not a song I enjoy to listen to.

Why is “radio friendly” alone enough to get points? If anything, it should lose points.

Usually I love to give credit to songs with a great message, an arty performance, etc… but this year I want to follow my heart, enjoy the competition and if I like to listen to a song, then I give points to it. It’s as simple as that. This is the reason why my top 10 is mainly composed of up tempo songs (Alika from Estonia is the only ballad in my top 10).

“I don’t get the hype” this expression….I can’t anymore, sorry, and it means nothing in fact.
Which hype? The majority is saying they are all pretty good and pretty strong, that’s all.
The hype is not on the big 5 side so far but on the Nordics and you know that very well.

2.) FRANCE
2./3.) UK (if her live vocals are good, then it is a shared 2nd place with France)
4. ITALY (nice, but nothing new from Italy)
5. SPAIN (highly appreciate it that they sending something unique and Spain-related, it is just not my cup of tea at all)

They’re all amazing, except for Germany, as usual.

I do think the UK is my favorite out of them all though. Yes, it’s a basic pop song, but it’s a perfectly crafted pop song. I catch myself constantly singing the pre-chorus & chorus all the time.

Five good songs.

Germany has grown on me the most. They’ll be excellent live. They deserve a Top 15 finish this year.

UK grew on me but has grown off me. I’d have rather seen a less “urban” vision of UK. Something classy instead would have been nice, something like, I don’t know…. Birdy? If the vocals are bad, Mae is on the right side of the board.

The Latins all have beautiful, classy songs by singers who can deliver on stage. I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re all Top 15.

The only two big 5 country that showed us the full package, live vocal capacity and a staging esc ready are Spain and Germany so far the rest remains a mystery. Italy, we already know the great Marco’s voice but we don’t have the esc version of his song yet, neither an idea of his staging. UK we can’t really judge her voice the first time she performed she was sick so it doesn’t count, her staging will be with dancers and choregraphy that’s all we know. France, still waiting for Miss La Zarra to perform her song live, I… Read more »

I’m nervous about the UK’s vocals…

Everyone saying she was sick…remember that Pia Maria was also sick during the party season last year and when it came to the night of the semi we all found out that she just couldn’t sing live.

I’m fearing that may be the unfortunate case for Mae…but I’m open to being proven wrong

Remember that Mae has headlined in HUGE stadiums before – so if she has bad vocals now it’s not neccessarily a bad thing even at Eurovision because she’ll probably bring the party…and we’re hosting it ANYWAY! So we dont wanna win!

France Italy Spain Germany / UK I believe France will be this years “iconic staged package” that we crave. The Fuego, the slomo that we will remember for years to come. It’s one of the few songs this year that I will randomly hum the melody to whist least expected. Italia. A beautiful song but I’m never really wowed by the way italy stage their songs (exception for Maneskin which was ace!) Spain. Personally I don’t really like this song but can appreciate the ethnic sounds of the Spanish culture. Germany. I do love rock music, but this is past… Read more »

France is really underestimated by the bookmakers by the fans also in the polls. I feel that during rehearsals it will be one of the countries that will create a big surprise. the staging will be very amazing, a play of light show, a show that is both simple and a big show in parallel. I think we will be very surprised by the zarra

There’s such a small gap between the current first and fifth places, it surrely means something about the level of this years Big 5 songs. I hope it will turn out well in the scoreboard knowing that at least two of them end bottom 5 each year recently. My favorite as of now is France, I’m excited to see the staging plan annouced for real

Currently I would probably go for Uk, not entirely sold on any of the big 5 this year. Hopefully France can elevate the song live as never really gets into second gear on studio edit. Germany is not great but I do rember the chorus despite it being a bit rubbish. Italy classy but dull. Spain is a very jarring to my ear, one for the jurys, cannot see the telovote going for it.
