Eurovision Song Contest 2023 United By Music

Liverpool will host 37 countries at the Eurovision Song Contest 2023, but there can only be one winner. The Wiwi Jury — our in-house panel of music unprofessionals — has now determined who they think the victor should be. We’ve ranked each of the acts from Eurovision 2023 and written our own reviews. It’s hard work being honest, but somebody has to do it.

Our jury consists of 20 jurors who hail from Australia, Bulgaria, Colombia, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Israel, Netherlands, Romania, Spain, United Kingdom and United States. We are truly international, y’all!

Each juror assesses each song independently and then awards the entry a score from 1 to 10. The highest and lowest scores are dropped before determining the Wiwi Jury average.

Scores and reviews were done in March 2023, based on available versions of the songs at that time. As always, Wiwi Jury reviews will not be changed to reflect new information from pre-party performances or the Eurovision rehearsals.

It’s really enlightening to realise how out of touch the wiwijury.really is.
The UK at 6th….seriously !!
Estonia and Lithuania so low down in the rankings. I could go on and on.
William just a suggestion for a future post. How way out most of your scores were.would be a good one.

I think it’s interesting that in the wiwibloggs reviews of songs RON awarded Finland 3 and SWEDEN 9.5

Loreen wins in the Eurovision bubble, but I think televoters, who will all be told she’s a former winner, will want to give someone else a chance. That’s how it works in these shows, hence the recent dire showing by host nations.

Funny thing I noticed: the way the rankings turned out this year, all of the automatic qualifiers are in the top 26, and exactly 5 acts from Semi 1 and 6 acts from Semi 2 are in the bottom 11. Basically, this could potentially be the final results

I think Ukraine will win the televote again but by narrow margin and the jury will make sure not to put them high in rankings to prevent Ukraine winning again (Ukraine winning second year in a row would only reflect negatively on the EBU). Sweden or Spain might win the jury votes…. It’s difficult to predict anything else, but at the end I can only see Finland winning the whole thing. I even started to believe Croatia (my own country, I’ve finally accepted the chosen song and admited it’s decent entry) could end up 2nd in the televote just like… Read more »

Everyone knows that the juries will vote heavily for Sweden – as usual – and will kill off any chance Finland has (as they did for Keino for Norway.) Even though, shall we say, the Swedish entry is very, very familiar. So probably will be Stockholm for Abba’s 50th anniversary of winning next year.

I really hope not, but the chances the juries don’t hypervote for Sweden are low…. Still, I think “Tattoo” will be the televote flop (or at least lower left on the board) and that might compensate for Finland’s lower jury votes… As I always point out, Loreen won the televote in 2012 by margin of only 11 points ahead of Babushki – and let’s face it, “Tattoo” is nowhere near “Euphoria”…. And not to be forgotten: the whole stack of televotes will once again go to Ukraine

Thank you Wiwi Jury. Welcome to everyone.
From me, there will be some reviews in this year’s edition that are joyfully detailed, and others that simply read as: “This music is not to my taste.” There will also be no scoring from me, since this really upset some important people many years ago who didn’t seem to realise this was meant to be fun. Disclaimer completed.

I managed to write reviews to my favorite songs, but since I don’t have as much free time as I had in previous years, the bottom of my ranking may get some very short ones too… A spoiler of the “running order” would be very helpful, but I guess the mystery is part of the fun.

In any case, I hope everybody has a great time during WiwiJury season. Let’s remember that taste is subjective and each artist is doing their best. No need to be disrespectful to them or to those reviewing songs here (both Wiwi members and readers/commenters).

Last year, I wrote most of my reviews before the Wiwi Jury. This year, I didn’t. However, I think I’ll have just enough time to write each on the day they come out, and “finalize” my pre-show rating then. I already have an idea where most of them are, but there are those which are tougher to rank. Spoiler alert, I hope that the running order keeps France, Netherlands, Belgium, Albania, Greece, and Switzerland as late as possible. 😉

I’ve already written my reviews and I also have some really detailed ones and some less detailed for songs that are just mediocre or below average (eg Denmark that just premiered). “Telemóveis” was one of the most interesting songs ESC had over the last 10 years, but I couldn’t stand its microtonal sound. To this day, it was the only ESC song that made me feel physically sick. However, years afterwards I heard a performance that Conan gave of the song re-tuned, and it was really beautiful. It made me realise how sensitive I am to tuning.

Telemoveis is a masterpiece, different, weird, but addictive. I am sad to say though that I don’t see this as a vintage year. There is a whole lot of songs where it actually felt like a chore to write some words. It’s not that I hate the songs, just that there’s a lot of songs that are actually not really worth writing much about, and that is a shame. My respect for William’s opinions stems largely from his high score for Portugal in 2017. He and a few others on the jury recognised that song was special.

But most of the jury didn’t, likely for the reasons you describe. As a result the average score was 6.5ish, placing the song midtable, and meaning the wiwi jury completely failed to identify a serious contender and eventual winner of the contest.
