Loreen "Tattoo" Melodifestivalen 2023

Over the last few weeks, the Wiwi Jury – our in-house team of music unprofessionals – has been reviewing and rating the 37 competing songs in Eurovision 2023. Having travelled across the globe to each participating country, we now have the final results of our personal ranking.

When taking an average score across 20 jurors from different countries and with different music tastes, it’s often hard to earn a high result. However, one act has not only managed to win over the vast majority of our jurors, they’ve broken records in the process.

We’re now happy to reveal that the Wiwi Jury’s favourite entry of Eurovision 2023 is Sweden’s Loreen with “Tattoo”.

Loreen wins the 2023 Wiwi Jury with “Tattoo”

Eight of our jurors awarded Loreen’s “Tattoo” with a perfect score of 10 — the most of any song this year. And with all but four jurors scoring the Swedish star a 9 or higher, Loreen pushed to victory.

Wiwiblogger Oliver was one those to award Loreen a 10:

“Loreen is unstoppable. Alongside her expert songwriting team, the former Eurovision champion takes a handful of simple ideas to create something greater than the sum of its parts. ‘Tattoo’ keeps the audience on the edge of their seats with its jaw-dropping stage show, powerhouse vocals, and satisfying pre-chorus motif that builds and drops exactly when it needs to. Sometimes, these high production value numbers lose heart and authenticity. But Loreen pours emotion into every word, every movement, and every moment. Sweden might have just secured its seventh Eurovision trophy.”

After dropping the lowest and (one of) the highest scores, Loreen earned an overall average score of 9.31 from the Wiwi Jury.

Our silver medal goes to another Nordic star. Finland’s Käärijä proved to be another very popular choice amongst our jurors, picking up five perfect 10s.

This includes our Ruxandra, who is fully diving into the crazy party spirit:

“I find Käärijä one of the best performers of this year. The song is a banger, the musical transition that appears in the song is iconic, the vocals are on point and I see a contagious charisma when I look at Käärijä. There’s no better description for this song than ‘it’s crazy, it’s party’ — and we need craziness in Eurovision. With a green bolero and some easy to follow dance moves, Finland is so ready to conquer Europe!”

Käärijä earned an impressive average score of 8.97 from the Wiwi Jury.

Highest Wiwi Jury scores 2012-2023

Analysing scores between the Wiwi Jury results of past contests is not completely comparable, since the number of jurors and their identities vary between years. But it’s interesting to examine nonetheless.

Before 2023, the highest score ever recorded in a Eurovision Wiwi Jury (not including national finals) was 9.25 — earned by Loreen with “Euphoria” in 2012. Now the Swedish star has surpassed her own record with her current entry “Tattoo”.

It’s not just Loreen who has managed to enter our top ten. Finland’s Käärijä has also earned one of the highest scores since the Wiwi Jury’s inception in 2012.

Our top-ten highest scores are now as follows:

  1. Sweden 2023: Loreen with “Tattoo” (9.31)
  2. Sweden 2012: Loreen with “Euphoria” (9.25)
  3. Netherlands 2019: Duncan Laurence – “Arcade” (9.15)
  4. Finland 2023: Käärijä – “Cha Cha Cha” (8.97)
  5. Italy 2017: Francesco Gabbani – “Occidentali’s Karma” (8.96)
  6. Sweden 2022: Cornelia Jakobs – “Hold Me Closer” (8.94)
  7. Spain 2022: Chanel – “SloMo” (8.91)
  8. Italy 2019: Mahmood – “Soldi” (8.80)
  9. Switzerland 2021: Gjon’s Tears – “Tout l’univers” (8.77)
  10. France 2021: Barbara Pravi – “Voilà” (8.73)

It’s important to note that the Wiwi Jury is not, and has never been, designed to be a prediction. Rather, it’s a way for us to share our personal pre-contest favourites with y’all.

We’ve enjoyed reading many of your own reviews over the past few weeks and finding out how your own personal rankings differ from our own.

Opinions will no doubt change once rehearsals start and we get to see exactly what each act will be bringing to the Eurovision 2023 stage in Liverpool.

What do you make of the Wiwi Jury 2023 results? Do you agree? How different is your own ranking of this year’s songs? Let us know in the comments below.

This is another reason why I consider 2021 one of the best years in ESC history. It was so unpredictable, you thought anybody could win. 2022 was weak because it was blatant Ukraine would win and 2023 can only be saved by a dark horse victory.

This is so unfair how u treat her. She is just one of the contestant, the song is product of many composers, it’s not very original and it might be too similar to Mika Newton’s old song…Euphoria or this song never spoke to me, too fake

we all know that Tattoo is not better than Euphoria., by far.
at this point in 2012 we knew without a doubt Loreen would win, but we think now that Finland, Spain or Armenia are strong dark horses and anything could happen

I don’t understand all this hatred towards Loreen.
She has one of the best entries this year (before the rehearsals), and deserves to be in the top 5, or even winning ! And remember: it’s only a song contest!

But people don’t worry only 2 out of 10 of wiwiblogs top rated songs went on to win.
Manneskin didn’t even feature nor Stefania.
So spread the word and let’s vote this fake song down. Anything but Sweden now. Anything

I literally love Loreen’s earlier works.
But, seeing how much Tattoo is being pushed for the win, JUST BECAUSE it is Loreen, I won’t be mad even if Albania wins.

Like, how much of a push for one is strong enough to alienate a big chunk of potential voters? We are already there

Omg the Loreen hate here. Of course part of Tattoo’s success is that it is Loreen singing it. You think Bad Romance would be such a hit if it was sung by Katy Perry? NO! An artist often makes or breaks the song. But the fact that people who like Tattoo constantly get downvoted and bullied for liking a “generic pop song”, and apparently have to accept that is just crazy. But when someone calls Cha cha cha chaotic or says that Spain isn’t their taste and sounds like 3 minutes of screaming (and yes I know it is vocally… Read more »

It’s not hate to say a song is over rated, that too is just an opinion! Not everyone will choose the same song. I think the reason for the ‘hate’ is because the fans of the song are behaving like it is the best entry to ever grace the Eurovision stage, but I think its fair to say, we all know that’s really not the case! I will put it to you this way, if Tattoo was selected to represent Ireland would it be anything more than a border line qualifier?…. this is where Eurovision becomes unfair and this is… Read more »

There are few reasons people dislike idea of Loreen winning (and not that I agree with all of them, just my observation) – even before song was performed in NF, her fans have proclaimed her a winner. -she already won once and people do tend to cheer for an underdog -in general, her song is being rated as something out of this world (even Wiw jury) which can be irritating as there is a number of equally interesting acts -also, she is favoured by media (on belhaf of her previous win) and people tend to get annoyed reading and hearing… Read more »

I agree to a point because I thinkall of us fans of eurovision have some connection to Loreen as an artist, she is iconic to the contest! BUT at the end of the day it is not the Eurovision Artist Contest….. its the Eurovision SONG Contest. I think most people will agree this song does not hit the levels of Euphoria, so the hype feels somewhat unjustified. Is it fair to have this artist listed as a favourite to win? 100% Is it fair to have this song listed as almost a certain winner before anyone had performed? I don’t… Read more »

History says Sweden WILL NOT win.
Linda Martin in 1992 is the only woman to win that is older than Loreen, Sertab Erener in 2003 and Katrina Leskanich (part of Katrina and the Waves) in 1997 are about the same. No other woman was over 32 when they won!
When you dilute the fandom the viewers in other countries are less likely to vote for it, and its a fact looking at Sweden’s public vote performance since they split the vote in 2016.
Looks like a lot of fans might be crying in their beers in two weeks time.

I’m not convinced about Cha Cha Cha for the win either. A very large cross section of the fan base have tunnel vision every year, Slo Mo and those who were in tears Sekret was NQ (I saw NQ vibe for it during rehearsals). All the online reviews, rankings etc. are pointless until rehearsals only then can you really review the entries under the same conditions.

Let’s be real the song is average and most of the fandom are screaming queen queen like pathetic sheep.
The reason why many people dislike her is because they are real people.
They aren’t queen screamers and they see the song for what it is. Therefore injustice angers them when media and ex fans from 2012 desperately want her to win.
She’s not as popular amongst the public as she is the fandom.

Okay, since the above is pretty much what could be considered a “conventional” top 10, I’m also gonna name around 10 entries from the modern era (2009 onwards) that I would personally rate a maximum 5/5 and add to the all-time tier, but that may not be considered as such by a large part of this fandom otherwise: Estonia 2009, Estonia 2010, Germany 2011, Finland 2012, Hungary 2013 (the original version), Georgia 2016 (the original version), Slovenia 2019, Portugal 2019, Lithuania 2022, France 2022 (the studio version in particular) and Portugal 2022.

I always thought the scores were graded against each other in that year so for example a 6/10 in 2016 wouldn’t necessarily be equivalent in quality to a 6/10 in 2023…Is that not correct Wiwibloggs?

I must say I like Tattoo but Euphoria was absolutely legendary back in 2012, I don’t think they really compare. But Tattoo is clearly a stand out entry for the songs submitted for 2023 in terms of overall quality and production, even if not my personal favourite.

If anything, this shows a process of “grade inflation” that only reduces the quality and credibility of the Wiwi jury. 6 of the best 10 songs, in 2021-2023. This is absurd and you guys know it.

Don’t doubt me, but when Loreen said filming a music video for “Tattoo” wasn’t a priority at the moment, I hope it doesn’t mean the song is never getting a music video because that would break the law of any song release as a single, Eurovision or non-Eurovision. What’s worse is that Eurovision’s YouTube channel calls national final performances music videos, which I think from 2024 onward should be forbidden. The average music video shouldn’t have the song’s live recording and audience cheering unless the video is concert-themed. Secondly, the ceiling could take up 90% of the stage in Liverpool.… Read more »

I actually never thought about that. Do Swedish entries usually get music videos?

They either seem to be way after the selection or a lyric video. The only ones I can think of off the top of my head since 2015 that had one are 2016,2018 and 2022 but that was a good while after it won Melfest.
