Theodor Andrei from Romania arrived in Liverpool. In a matter of days, he’ll take to Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena stage to perform his song “D.G.T. (Off and On)” in Eurovision 2023 semi-final two. After his second rehearsal, we caught up with the Romanian superstar at the LUSH Liverpool Lounge.

Theodor discussed the changes that were brought to his staging, the message he wants to send through his song and how he always dreamed to represent his country in Eurovision.

Romania’s Theodor Andrei “D.G.T. (Off and On)” — Interview after Eurovision 2023 first rehearsal

Theodor Andrei is in his last high school year, yet he managed to dedicate all the requested time to prepare for this year’s Eurovision. He confessed that Eurovision was always a dream of his, as he always wanted to represent his country and he even considered this in the previous years too. But now, he believes that now was the right time.

His song speaks about the battle of love, about how a toxic love leads to a huge disaster. The song is a mixture of genres including rock ‘n’ roll, hip-hop and blues.  The mixture of all these genres create a New Age Eurovision entry with a sexy atmosphere.  He strongly believes that “rock n’ roll has no limits”.

During the interview, Theodor showed some of his skills with sign language, expressing the messages of his song: freedom, equality, peace and love. Theodor confessed in the interview that he was a victim of bullying in school and how that rough period changed him a lot. He wants to use his new Eurovision platform to encourage everyone to keep on going and to stay true to their authentic self. He said: “Be the change you want to see in the world.”

On winning Romania’s Selectia Nationala, Theodor confessed that somehow he was expecting it and somehow not. He was confident about his performance, feeling that he mastered it after numerous rehearsals — and he believed that maybe people will feel connected to his song.

He believes that Eurovision is more than a music competition. Theodor described the song contest as  “an anniversary of musical cultures.”

He’s a nice guy, if only he had a better song. I wish him good luck in his musical journey.

Kind of curious… u want to say that he is not relevant enough so he has to pay or Wiwiblogs are biased and did not want to do it for free?

No, he needs to seek health. From the development of this Eurovision journey it’s obvious that he hates himself and wants to embarrass himself and probably the whole country.

I like his guy, he’s super talented and I hope he has a really good career in music ahead of him. I think that the staging looks a lot better, as well. But it isn’t good enough to qualify, no way.

It’s cases like this that prove Eurovision still is a song contest, despite what people say. Theodor has everything else going for him, a genuinely nice/decent guy, a great voice, obviously talent for performance, and a friendly personality in all the interviews, but not a competitive song.

Theodor has the second highest note (B5) of the competition and the lowest note (E2) of the competition, and the widest vocal range. If juries were voting in the semis, I think he might have a better chance of qualifying. Unfortunately for him, I think his impressive vocal abilities are let down by the song. I admire his confidence though and glad he’s having so much fun.

Only if juries were in fact music experts

He went from putting literally everything on that stage in the NF to absolutely nothing at Eurovision (based in the clip). I feel this has no chance to advance.

All the feedback received made his team change it. Moreover TVR decided to use the acoustic part when nothing is happening That is sad because he cannot use his acting skills. Unpopular opinion, I believe in him, I want him qualify. Juries from the final will like more him and his wide vocal range. But I am still dreaming. I am afraid to read the comments if he really qualifys.

From what I’ve heard TVR doesn’t help him with anything. What do you expect from 17 yo guy without team behind him? Damn, it’s really not fair
