Twin superstars TuralTuranX have arrived in Liverpool with their guitars and are ready to represent Azerbaijan with their song “Tell Me More”.

We caught up with Tural and Turan Baghmanov at the LUSH Lounge after their second rehearsal at the M&S Bank Arena.

The brothers chatted about the story behind their song, their beautiful hometown, and the best part of being twins.

In describing their staging concept, the brothers wanted it to feel “comfortable” above all. With a simple, stripped-down setup, TuralTuranX and their music are able to take center stage; “you can see the song.” Even though they didn’t get to see their costumes before rehearsals, they love their complementary, retro-style purple and green suits. In fact, Turan adores his costume because it’s in his favourite colour.

While their performance pays tribute to the Beatles – Liverpool’s very own – Tural and Turan remain true to themselves in their songwriting. The song was born a year ago when Tural started composing some chords in his music course. He then took it to his brother, who at the same time was writing some song lyrics after being rejected by a girl. They combined their creations, which then became Azerbaijan’s 2023 entry. As Turan described their song, “it’s about connecting with people, it’s about empathy” and reaching out to people who feel lost and are searching for love.

The twins also talked about being inspired by the landscape of their hometown. “We’re from Zaqatala, there’s lots of trees, lots of mountains…it’s a beautiful place, it does impact you”. At the same time, they feel right at home in Liverpool, as the air here reminds them of the air back home.

As for the advantage of being twin musicians? As Tural described, “I know [Turan’s] sound”. This makes it easy for the brothers to harmonize well, which involves everything from matching the timbre of their voices to the shape of their vowels. They even performed an impromptu cover of SHOUSE’s “Love Tonight” to demonstrate their harmonies. As William says, “it’s genetic”.

I can tell I’ll be listening to this for years to come. Such a classic and sweet and charming song!! Something about the simplicity of it makes it so much more memorable to me. Wish Azerbaijan sent home grown talent more often

I have a soft spot for feel-good and/or laid-back tunes like this. And they sell it quite well with their music video (the “less-is-more” strategy). I anticipate that many out there don’t necessarily feel the same way. Nonetheless, they are my #9 this year.

I anticipate that they will get smashed in the semis, in part or in whole because of the improprieties that involved AZE last year. Not to mention that (if I read correctly) advancement to the final will be done entirely by televote.
