Crisis averted the fans won on this one ! Please find below a statement from the BBC and EBU: “After trying a new system of presenting the qualifying countries in Dress Rehearsal 1 of the First Semi-Final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 it was decided by the production team to revert back to the previous reveal sequence used in recent years with artists learning whether they will progress to the Grand Final together with their delegations in the Green Room. Whilst this change will not now be implemented this year there are other innovations in the show for viewers… Read more »

So, apart from doing the qualifier announcements “x-factor style” this year, they are also doing short interviews with the qualifiers mid-announcement to increase the tension. Like asking Loreen “how she feels” while more than half the artists are still awkwardly standing on the podium waiting for their name to be called (or not). Plus, they are doing a split-screen of the last 6 acts waiting for the announcement of the final qualifier(s). All alone, on stage without the delegations.
This is so degrading, it’s even worse than I imagined.

When in past years the qualifiers came to the stage at the end while the hosts did their closing speech, now they do mini interviews with the first five qualifiers, then the next 4 qualifiers before announcing the last one and finally the last qualifier does a short interview right after being called. By Alesha Dixon, no less, to really hammer home that x-factor theme. It’s horrendous.

Absolutely disagree with the new way the qualifiers are announed. No self respecting artists would want to take part in this humiliating experience. This is not a national final nor a talent show, these people represent more than themselves they represent their countries. Also being alone on stage without their teams to celebrate with makes it a sad experience for those that Q as well not just the NQs. EBU goes from wrong decision (100 % televote) to wrong decision (Q announcment) this year giving in to a populist narrative. I hope they rethink this approach asap or else Osterdahl… Read more »

So the rumours are true?
An absolute disgrace. I assume it’s too late to change now, but I really hope this is a one-off thing and it’ll be gone by next year!

Yes they are true pictures of the artists standing on stage during the announcment are floating around. It’s embarassing ! I hope they change even NOW for the second semi at least !

So bad! What do they win by doing this? More drama? It’s song contest, not some kind of stupid tv show where they do everything to «entertain» bloodthirsty public …

Live discussion article for the dress rehearsals please ? Till then :

My SF 1 prediction :

Sweden
Finland
Norway
Czech Republic
Moldova
Serbia
Israel
Croatia
Latvia
Azerbaijan

Instead of Latvia and Azerbaijan it may be Portugal (it has a couple of allies in France and Switzerland maybe) and either Netherlands or Switzerland IF songs play any role. But I doubt it. We’ll see.

It would be nice to see more effort put into the songs and maybe a bit less on their images. Even the best songs this year are less that mediocre.

True. It’s just a shame that the commentator was so awful. Like distractingly so. The hosts were on-point and the organisation was great.

The hostess: Everything on point. Azerbaijani twins: so so beautiful!! Fantastic matching outfits, hair and styling. I LOVED this special look. Outstanding. Israel: she’s simply stunning. Such a beauty. What an outfit!! Unicornic. Cyprus: YES PLEASE. Italy: I can’t get enough of him. His style is excellent in general. I always enjoy looking at this handsome guy ? Poland: the BEJBA dress – this girl is smart! She’s owning the meme. Loved it. I know about the whole Polish preselection scandal, but I just can’t hate her. She’s funny. Horrible singer but funny… Georgia: interesting, captivating the eyes. Spain: PERFECTION.… Read more »

I preferred last year. I felt that the interviews were so weak. Sam Quek lacked the knowledge of the contest or the entrants to have more insightful discussions. Timor was better.

Anytime there was an an aerial shot all you could see was the vast emptiness of the open areas around the two buildings, devoid of any crowds except for the 1000 “invited” fans, it all looked a bit fake. You’d have to wonder about the level of interest in the contest from your average Liverpudlian.
