Twenty-six acts sang in the grand final of Eurovision 2023. Austria opened with a chaos bop involving the author Edgar Allan Poe, while the United Kingdom closed with a song about channeling aggression after a breakup. In between we saw men wearing dresses (with moustaches that nodded to dictators of the past) and a Canadian-born chanteuse balancing on a plinth while serving French disco. But in the end it was Sweden‘s Loreen who topped the vote to win Eurovision 2023.

Loreen’s victory makes her the first woman ever to win the contest twice and only the second artist (after Ireland’s Johnny Logan) to achieve the feat. She did it by topping the jury vote and coming second in the public vote. Finland’s Käärijä, who finished 57 points behind Loreen, won the public vote but came fourth with the jury.

“I’m so happy,” Loreen said on stage while collecting her trophy. “I’m so thankful. Thank you for this. This is for you. Thank you.”

Next year’s contest, which will take place in Sweden, coincides with the 50th anniversary of ABBA’s win with “Waterloo” in 1974.

Sweden has now tied Ireland for the most wins — with seven.

The telenovela is finally clear. We all know the reason why Sweden won. Abba changed advice very quickly. First they said they would never be present to the Eurovision in Sweden. Now they changed advice. I am sure SVT is applying the same pressure they applied to Loreen in order to participate and stage the fake victory.

I’m from the Netherlands. I checked our jury and 2 people from our jury aren’t even music experts, one is a comedian and the other one is a host for television. Guessing something like this is also the case for other countries. So basically, juries aren’t even music experts anymore but famous people from a country. Because, genuinely, how does a famous comedian and a regular person watching Eurovision differ in music taste that the former is allowed to become a jury? If you’re gonna make a jury, do it with only real experts and not just famous people!

A long interview of LOTL was just uploaded on YT from ESC-Kompakt (german).
Despite coming last they loved everything about ESC and have only good memories.

Big 5 to be abolished. They should qualify like all other entries.
No juries, it should be peoples choice, only televoters to decide.
Points should be awarded from first to last, not only top 10.

Previous winners shoud be exluded from future entries.
Non-winners wait a minimum of 5 years to enter again.

Winners have unfair advantage as seen this year.

Last news, Marco Mengoni has got a gold record in Switzerland. He is the first singer among all the ones in Eurovision 2023 (Loreen included) to have a certification in Europe and outside his country. He hasgot 3 platinums in Italy, already. Not the gold in Switzerland.

We had a similar discussion at coworking Malmö. Even though I am very happy that we won first place, I think Loreen could do better. When I watched her performance I got the feeling that her singing and the music were not synchronized. The first time she did better. Still, she has a great voice. Probably the song was not good enough.

Norway: The jury ruined it for the big favorite
Stig Karlsen, Norwegian Head of Delegation says to Dagbladet:

“The jury system in Eurovision definitely needs to be evaluated and the debate is very welcome. There has been a difference between the jury and the public vote in the past as well, but this year it became extremely distinctive. The people obviously had a different winner. The fact that a jury of 185 people should have as much power as millions of TV viewers is questionable.”

1 million thumbs up to Stig.

You cannot possibly have 37 juries giving just 52 jury votes to Norway while the public gave Norway 216 Televotes.

I said it before, and I say it again. The juries knew that Finland and Norway were massive televote threats, so they eliminated both in the Juries section.

I’m not sure why no other broadcasters have not publicly objected yet. I wonder if this could actually be the first salvo hitting back at EBU??

The EBU is still silent on the issue. They know they have a massive PR disaster on their hands.

It sure is when 14 juries gave Finland zero points, while 18 countries gave Finland 12 points, 9 gave Finland 10 points and 4 gave Finland 8 points.

That’s 31 out of 37 countries had Finland in their Top 3.

Sweden’s equivalent numbers are: 0 countries gave it 12 points, 8 gave it 10 points and 8 gave it 8 points.

That is only 16 out of 37 countries had Sweden in their Top 3.

I am very happy that the Norwegian Head of Delegation has gone public.

Hopefully others will too.

I’m not sure MoGu. I’m also puzzled why everyone – EBU, Fan Clubs, Broadcasters – have all suddenly gone silent. This jury win has become a very hot potato.

Stig is the first official I am aware of that has been this frank and direct. Is something happening behind the scenes that’s creating the silence?? Are they hoping that it will go away?? (I’m not sure it’s going away.)

Over at YT many videos are already popping up about the biased jury voting.

If the debate will end up with a modification of the juries or the jury weight, I see it hard for Sweden winning again. Unless they will bring some really innovative song or not a copy and paste who already won. Maybe the big heads ib Sweden shall start to think more on how to win the televote, not to rig the juries. But unfortunately, due to some Swedes here, it will be difficult for many televoters to forget the arrogance of a country who uses Eurovision as they carpet or to project the power they never had, they don’t… Read more »

For me the real questions are: what does EBU do with juries moving forward & how will the general televoting public punish Sweden in the future? The jurors have shown themselves to be totally biased and blinkered towards certain countries. The EBU now has a massive credibility issue. The general voting public feel cheated, while Sweden’s image has also been severely damaged by the antics of these ‘professional jurors’. Four times in as many years the real winner has been denied due to these ‘professional’ juror’s voting patterns. Sweden has benefitted twice as a direct result of these jury votes,… Read more »

Thanks Vincenzo. It’s how I feel.

The 50/50 system was meant to eliminate the bias of diaspora & bloc voting. Instead, it’s become a tool for 200 nobodies to manipulate the outcome and over-ride the public choice. This year was most extreme example yet.

This current system is destroying the contest and leaving the majority of fans angry. When a song that attracts almost 85% of the max points still is deemed to be the ‘losing’ song then you know something is wrong.

But off course Frederik/Tony will ride in and tell us we’re sore losers.

Remember only 27 points separated Loreen & Alessandra in teh televotes. 288 points separated them in the jury votes. That number says everything.

Eliminating both Norway & Finland in the jury votes was the only way. But told tell Fredrik/Tony that…

2023 was supposed to be the last year of cooperation between SBS and EBU? I really hope Australia will be there next year because I often love what the artists bring to Eurovision and Voyager were phenomenal this year. They were my 5th place after the show.

Yes, the previous agreement ended. This was possibly our last entry.

Voyager was top five for many, judging by reaction videos. Because lots of fans realised that there was undue influence to push Sweden to host next ESC most of Australia’s televotes went to Finland.

Not sure how they did it but it’s amazing if you compare the quality of the performances on YouTube compared to either last year or the year before. Of course he cannot go in an interview and say Loreen was helped by the Juries. He still is a neighbour of Sweden and his song is first in the charts. But when he says thing with juries and televote must change he admits the victory of Loreen is undeserved. So he betrayed his words with that sentence.

The jurors need to stop being blinkered and start doing their job correctly.

They need to start Voting for songs, not countries.

My personal view after this year’s fiasco is that juries must go.

Diaspora voting never created this much of a mess. For the most part 100% televoting gave us some of the best ESC winners.

Juries are becoming more open to songs in languages other than English and to “ethnic” songs (Ukraine 2021, Spain 2023). I hope that trend will continue. I’m also glad that Finland got a couple of 12s from the juries. In 2019 Norway won the televote but they didn’t get a single 12 from juries. One thing I dislike about the new way of presenting the results is that the jury vote occupies much more airtime than the televote. In 2019 again, we saw Sweden and North Macedonia getting jury 12s many times but we never saw Norway even though at… Read more »

Loreen’s second ‘victory’ has totally destroyed her reputation and has completely overshadowed her epic and well deserved first win.

Her name will forever be associated as being the runner-up who got to hold up the winner trophy thanks to jury biased voting.

Time will show that my observation is spot on 🙂

All these years later everyone still says that Il Volo (2015) was robbed of their win due to jury votes to Sweden. The same will happen to Loreen – the label has now stuck on her.

The big question mark that I still have is how the televoting public will treat Sweden in future competitions. My instincts say they will boycott her moving forward…time will tell.

Very interesting to read the comments where most of them agree things worked very well for Sweden this time. So well that it all seems rigged. And I am sure it is.

There is also the other comment. When Balkans countries were voting each other, the vote system had to be changed to prohibit neighbours voting. When Nordics vote each other at each eurovision, that is ok and accepted and no Nordics Executive Supervisor has nothing to say. That proves how much Eurovision is biased in favour of the Nordics.

Another comment there from a voice coach that checked the opinion of other voice coaches is that Loreen was not perfect in singing. There are treasure vaults in the comments to this video. All fanatic Swedes should go to reas them. There is also a Swede begging for pardon for the rigged vote.

I recall one commentator suggesting starting a fraud case against the EBU in the Swiss courts. That would be awesome.

Imagine a court ruling that EBU must refund all televote monies back to televoters.

Surely there must be a massive Eurovision Fan out there who is a Lawyer and could start such a class action against EBU 🙂

Here are partial re-post from Colin which I found insightful Part 2: Explaining the bias. Despite of what I said, the juries still did give almost all of their points to Sweden. And despite many rumors to the contrary, I personally do NOT think that all of these people (many of them musicians, music lovers, and even some ex-representatives) are corrupt, malicious, or deliberately biased. They are, for the most part, convinced that they are just doing their job. The issue is that the juries are spoon-fed the idea that music is not subjective after all. And sure, there is… Read more »

You’re suggesting giving the televote two thirds of the power. If you don’t like televoters voting multiple upon multiple times, then maybe your suggestion is flawed. How many televote points a song gets does not necessarily indicate how much the wider public like it.

In the interests of fairness, maybe we can consider how this also impacts on the televote. it immediately makes Finland the underdog, someone to root for. Against the big giant Sweden. David against Goliath. It also leads voters to believe that Finland “needs” their televote more than invincible Sweden. Loreen can just sit back and put her feet up, and her voters can do the same. “We all know she’s going to win” cry the huddled masses. Good point but there is still a difference between jury and televote. As a televoter, I can avoid voting for a country but I cannot keep other televoters from voting for it. As a juror, I can place that country at 25th and that may lead to that country getting 0 points. So, both televote and jury may be “tactical”, but a juror can do much more harm.

Very true. 2015 was a bit different though in that the audience was not immediately aware that the juries stole Italy’s win. That came later and was drowned out in the media at the time. Last week however it was there for everyone to see – on live TV with millions watching. That’s why the audience in the stadium were booing, and why the backlash has been massive since then.
