Els de Schepper competed in Eurosong (Belgium’s Eurovision national selection) back in 2006. Although she didn’t make it to Eurovision herself, she’s now been able to creatively collaborate with someone who did. Els’s new song “Unsaid” was composed by two-time entrant for San Marino, Serhat.

The Turkish singer-songwriter, presenter and music producer worked on the lyrics of the song with Jens Geerts. It was then Jens’s idea to bring Els in as vocalist, having wanted to work with her for some time.

“Unsaid” is a melancholic song with a universal sound. The song shows Els from her most pure, authentic and fragile side, while she takes a journey into everyone’s deepest doubts and desires.

Five years ago, Els lost the love of her life. After all these years, she was finally able to talk about it and process that immense loss and grief through “Unsaid”.

Els de Schepper – “Unsaid”

Els confessed the story about the song in an official press release:

“When I heard the melody of ‘Unsaid’ for the first time, I was silent for a moment. And that doesn’t happen easily to me. This is a song that touches me personally, in which I recognise myself and undoubtedly many others with me. Five years ago I lost Adel, the love of my life. We came from completely different worlds. He was a respected surgeon in Egypt and Saudi Arabia, but I couldn’t possibly live and work where he lived and worked. The last time I saw him we had left certain things undiscussed. However, when I got a premonition that something was about to happen, I wanted to speak to him before it was too late. It wasn’t to be. We have not been able to see each other in this life. Now when I sing ‘Unsaid’, I am in dialogue with Adel. Yet this song is not just my story: it is an ode to the pain and memories that people carry with them. Everyone experiences difficult times in their lives. We all have that in common and I hope that by realizing this, people will feel less alone when listening to the song.”

The artwork of “Unsaid” was designed by Els herself. The original drawing symbolises “gone with sorrow”.

Yes, send Serhat back to Eurovision! He gave San Marino the best result ever and deserves to become the male Valentina Monetta just like Loreen has become the female Johnny Logan.

Still processing the loss of all of Portugal, Hungary and Poland back in that 2019 SF while Serhat somehow qualified instead, yes…
