It’s official: Malmö will host Eurovision 2024. The three live shows will take place on 7, 9 and 11 May. What follows is the official press release from Sweden’s broadcaster SVT.

Directly after Loreen’s historic victory in Liverpool, SVT started work on the Eurovision Song Contest 2024. After dialogue with several cities, the event lands in Malmö. Semifinals and finals take place on 7, 9 and 11 May 2024 in Malmö Arena.

“Being able to welcome all the competing countries to Malmö is fantastically fun and meaningful,” says SVT CEO Hanna Stjärne.

“Hundreds of millions of TV viewers will follow the broadcasts from Sweden. The Eurovision Song Contest fulfills a particularly important function in these times of war in Europe and it is with great respect that we take on the event. Malmö is a creative city with a rich cultural life that can create a music festival for the whole of Europe in a sustainable way, not least financially, because the arena, communications and logistics are already in place.”

SVT is responsible for all parts of the television production and Malmö creates festivities for the city and its residents, participating delegations, visiting fans and international press and takes care of logistics solutions.

“We received strong, exciting and creative proposals from several cities, for which we are extremely grateful,” says Ebba Adielsson, executive producer and ultimately responsible for the Eurovision Song Contest 2024.

“The commitment of the municipalities has been outstanding. When we finally had all the options on the table, we made an overall assessment, where many factors had to come into play. Since the organized ESC 2013, Malmö has added efficient and more sustainable flows as well as more and modern meeting places. They are also firmly committed to offering even more than last time to visitors and residents to actively participate in the festivities. It will in many ways be a new experience.”

In connection with Eurovision, delegations from around 40 countries are expected to visit Malmö and around 1,000 accredited journalists and fans are estimated to cover the festivities. When Liverpool hosted Eurovision last spring, half a million people visited the city in connection with the event.

The Eurovision Song Contest is Europe’s largest shared television experience that unites countries and people through music and culture.

Eh, it comes as a surprise how Sweden fails to book Friends/Tele2 for third time. They even talked how Stockholm is the best choice, not looking good as of now.

No, only fans talked about Stockholm, as if that was the only option.
How about giving it a chance, see what else is planned and judge on what you see rather than judging it out as ” not looking good” based on the simple fact it was not the choice you wanted?

I wonder if given how host countries never win in recent Eurovision—would Sweden be so bold to send a song in Swedish. Their local music scene is so Swedish-forward, even with their biggest stars. Why not take a gamble. Look at Finland this year.

Because none of them are competetive enough. It is very obvious they are simply there to fill the 10% Swedish language criteria. If they are competetive then send it. But to send one only for the sake of it..

I disagree. Clara Klingenström’s “Behöver inte dig idag”, Medina’s “In i dimman”, and Jon Henrik Fjällgren’s “Where You Are (Savezan)” are my favourite Swedish possible entries of the last decade. Europe is becoming bored of Europop songs too, and I noticed that songs sung by local artists in native or regional languages tend to do better than songs sung by the same artists in English only. That’s because songs in English are generally mainstream and repetitive: same rhyme, same structure, same language. I’m glad Eurovision is turning its head towards promoting local languages more as well. That’s great! And that’s… Read more »

Regarding why none of them wants to try, well, Mello’s entries sound the same every year, any genre other than pop and songs in Swedish are rarely (relatively speaking) featured at Mello, and the latter ones are often a comical relief, that should change imo

When has Sweden ever sent anything bold and daring, we look at songs from 2000s and 2010s it’s the most mildest plastic-pop we’ve ever heard.

Their 2001 song “Listen to Your Heartbeat” plagiarized Belgium’s 1996 entry, and that’s the most daring thing they’ve done ever.

Adding this: Even Sweden’s 2016 entry “If I Were Sorry” by Frans was plagiarized from Matt Simon’s “Catch & Release”, these allegations seem to be constant with Swedish entries.

I am not a fan of Malmo bc it has a bad reputation and it is boring.

I also think their bid was not as good as Liverpool so I don’t expect a great Eurovision…

Malmo arena will have the same capacity as Liverpool (or slightly more) if they keep the green room in the standing area.

I like Malmo a lot and I’m quite happy to have another excuse to visit it. But I’ll probably end up staying in Copenhagen too, because the hotel capacity in Scania is simply too low. I mean, the SVT/EBU are apparantely desperate too, since they’ve also booked out some hotels in places like Lund.

I found a hotel in Helsingborg charging 700+ euros per night for a flex reservation during the Eurovision week. Obviously the prices will normalise a bit as the date approaches, like they did in Liverpool, but nevertheless, CPH will likely be a better choice.

Taylor Swift has taken hold of Friends, and the football teams of Tele2 won’t let their arena go for a few weeks either, Gothenburg has a too old arena which is straight up dangerous. Örnsköldsvik is too small, too much of a gamble very difficult to get to. So Malmö was the only choice left…

Taylor wasn’t taking hold of Friends Arena in 2013 or 2016, SVT & the Football teams still haven’t got a plan for “incase for a win” which is surprising as Sweden has almost won several times and we had this situation already twice, if Gothenburg’s Scandinavium is dangerous then nothing should be held there – not even Melodifestivalen, Örnsköldvik is small, so it’s very narrow chance it’s going to host ever.

Scandinavium still holds events but the roof rigging for ESC would be too heavy for the roof so it can’t be held there, and to renovate it would cost alot of money and also might get delayed as those kind of things do… Taylor just like ESC needs time to set everything up in Friends Arena therefore she probably has booked the Arena for more than a week… There are now 4 football teams from Stockhom in the highest division of the Swedish football league…2 of them in Tele2, 1 in Friends and 1 is a small team.. the 3… Read more »

A lot of reasons why Stockholm wasn’t a reasonable option in the first place, but SVT saying how they prefer Stockholm and even name their first choice of venue (without propper preparing on getting it on three occasions) shows lack of respect for other cities and their efforts, basicly telling us that other cities are never a main choice. Melodifestivalen might be “Hela Sveriges fest”, but they sure show that the number one city in case of a victory will always be Stockholm. Us going to Malmö just seems like a let down, because the broadcaster talked like these cities… Read more »

Taylor will be performing after the 17th of May.

ESC could have been held in Friends Arena the first week of May. The problem was that the football teams needed the stadium and we all know that EBU needs to book the arena 4-6 weeks in advance which clashes with the football games.

Friends Arena was never pushed in 2016. It was the Globe as it was known then.
And SVT never pushed anything, they gave every city oppurtunity . These four cities were the only ones deemed suitable by EBU.

Well, that was quick. I didn’t expect the host city announcement to happen so soon. The last two times we found out the host city and dates was in October, so Sweden is ahead of schedule here. It’s also an interesting observation that this will be the fifth Eurovision in a row that is not held in a capital city. I don’t think we’ve ever had such a long streak of non-capital cities hosting. I wonder what’s the earliest and latest time a host city was announced in Eurovision history. Time to conduct some research.

For some years people complained about the contrary, saying it was always the capitals that were hosting the contest. During the 20 years pre-covid pandemia (so from 2000 to 2019), only Istanbul 2004, Düsseldorf 2011, Malmö 2013 and Tel Aviv 2019 weren’t the capital of the country (I don’t count 2010 as Baerum is a suburb of Oslo). I think it’s nice to see other cities even though it doesn’t change anything for me.

Copenhagen, on the other hand, has plenty of economic offers on the plate.
