Ready, set, slay! Belgium is the first country out of the gate to Malmö and has revealed its Eurovision 2024 artist: Mustii.

Known to mom and pop as Thomas Mustin, Mustii is an actor and singer from Brussels. He’s released two albums and starred in an acclaimed Romeo and Juliet stage show that opened the Théâtre de Liège. He can give as good as he gets. Mustii is also a judge on Drag Race Belgique — the Belgian edition of the wildly popular drag franchise.

Below you can check out his eye-popping performance from the Semi-Final of the show. He most definitely holds his own!

Details about his song will be revealed at a later date. He told Belgian media that the song won’t drop until February.

Speaking to VRT News in Belgium, Mustii admitted that he’s not well-known in Flanders. But he’s definitely made a name for himself in French-speaking Belgium.

“Ever since I was little I wanted to be an actor and not a firefighter or a pilot,” he told the news site. “But I have also released two albums in the meantime. Now I have a double career: actor and singer. I see music as a form of theater by the way. Creating a total act. That’s why I said yes when they asked me for the Eurovision Song Contest.”

So how did he find out about the gig? His team broke the news while he was on the set of Drag Race Belgium.

“I was sitting in the make-up chair and I was still tired, someone from the team came to me in my whisper in my ear. I had to let it sink in.”

Mustii described his music as “pop with a dark edge” and said that he’s influenced by everything from new wave to rock.

“I contrast pop with fragile subjects, I like to play with them. My last album, for example, was a homage to my uncle who had schizophrenia.”

“My idea is to go to the Eurovision Song Contest with my own DNA. I don’t want to lie, I want to be sincere and authentic. I don’t want to create a fake character.”

“I have been working in the studio for a while. I also want the song to be part of an album and not just a random song for the Eurovision Song Contest.”

The EBU shared his official bio:

“In 2017, he landed a lead role alongside Mathilde Seigner in the French TV movie Je Voulais Juste Rentrer Chez Moi, in which he played the infamous Patrick Dils before playing Hamlet in 2019 under the direction of Emmanuel Dekoninck.”

“Alongside acting, Mustii has made a name for himself as a singer. With two albums to his credit, 21st Century Boy and It’s Happening Now, successful tours (selling out the Ancienne Belgique on 3 occasions) and winning the ‘Revelation of the Year’ trophy at the D6bels Music Awards, Mustii is known for seducing audiences with his captivating voice, which is both powerful and fragile at the same time.”

“Next year is set to be his busiest yet as not only will he represent Belgium at the Eurovision Song Contest in Sweden, but he’ll also return as a permanent judge on Drag Race Belgique (Season 2) and star in Michiel Blanchart’s next film La nuit se traîne alongside Romain Duris.”

What do you think? Are you familiar with Mustii’s music? Do you think he can top Gustaph’s result? Let us know down below…

Interesting choice, his cool and contemporary music might do well with both the televoters and jury’s. But what will happen if the Netherlands picks Joost Klein’s song , given the fact he’s so popular in a growing number of European country’s?

Sandra
Sandra

I don’t trust the Belgium jury, they judge a language not a song, the francophone jury gave zero points to the Diepte by S10 because it was in Dutch, the year before the Dutch speaking jury gave zero points to Barbara Pravi, because it was in French. Countries should be suspended for this kind of behavior. They should judge a song no matter what.

You know he’s not a drag right? He’s gay, open minded and accepted to be part of Drag Race Belgium jury but it doesn’t mean he is gonna come in Malmö dressed like a drag queen. And even if he wants to, where is the problem of the song is good?

Next year challenge: reveal your representative for 2025 just after the Grand Final results 2024.
The Esc Gods who decide everything love to see that motivation for their “contest”, Eleni Foureira, Duncan Lawrence, Noah Kirel among others were all announced very early and all got very good results so I see you Belgium, it’s clever knowing that next year Eurovision is precisely in the Esc Gods country!
Then the countries sure to be in the top 5 next year: Italy, Sweden, Belgium.
And for the bottom 5, the big 4 as always.
That’s Eurovision… predictable isn’t it?.

He has an interesting vibe, reminds me a little bit of Loic Nottet.

Interesting how they’ve gone for someone related to Drag Race. Could be because of the audience shared by both Drag Race and Eurovision? I wouldn’t like them to be linked at all, there are too much stereotypes about Eurovision by now and one can’t argue the LGBTIQ community has taken over the contest in recent years.

Drag Race seems like a rather small part of Mustii’s biography— it’s only run for one season at this point— probably being pushed by the broadcaster for the cross-program synergy, I’m guessing. It doesn’t bother me at all, but it’s clear from this thread that it gives rise to stereotypes that aren’t borne out by the music.

When you say the “one can’t argue the LGBTIQ community has taken over the contest”, are you referring to the fact the contest is queer-friendly and trans-friendly, that multiple contestants in a given year may be LGBTQIA+, or are you suggesting it’s too “flamboyant” and you don’t want to see the proud queerness that’s seen in Drag Race on stage at ESC?

I don’t think he will. I’d also prefer if he didn’t because 1. It’s been done more than once so it’s not really bringing anything new or original and 2. I think it runs the risk of distracting from the actual song/performance and some will just view it as a drag act or the guy singing in drag.

Are you saying this because of Mustii being a judge on drag race? Just because someone is a judge doesn’t mean they actively perform in drag themselves. And even if he did, is there a concern with a drag performer singing at ESC?

I’m not a fan of his music, but his live vocals, music videos and overall aesthetic is great.

I really enjoyed Belgium’s Eurosong this year, why would they scrap it after a very successful result? Gustaph, Cherrine & Gala Dragot all had songs that were worthy of placing top 10 in Liverpool. Surely Mustii could’ve just participated in a NF, It’s not like he’s a national superstar and Belgium needed to cancel Eurosong for this opportunity.

Belgium has two participating broadcasters. They alternate every other year. The French speaking broadcaster always selects internally. Eurosong will be back in 2025.

He’s been releasing music– really good music!– since 2015. And acting too. Identifying him first as a Drag Race judge trivializes him. It’s relevant to mention, but not the most important thing. It’s like third-paragraph stuff.

Whilst a lot of people will be celebrating that we are getting a diverse ‘drag’ act for one of only a few times at Eurovision, I am hoping he is true to himself and performs without as much of that as possible since he looks dashing and professional without it anyway.
