Ready, set, slay! Belgium is the first country out of the gate to Malmö and has revealed its Eurovision 2024 artist: Mustii.
Known to mom and pop as Thomas Mustin, Mustii is an actor and singer from Brussels. He’s released two albums and starred in an acclaimed Romeo and Juliet stage show that opened the Théâtre de Liège. He can give as good as he gets. Mustii is also a judge on Drag Race Belgique — the Belgian edition of the wildly popular drag franchise.
Below you can check out his eye-popping performance from the Semi-Final of the show. He most definitely holds his own!
Details about his song will be revealed at a later date. He told Belgian media that the song won’t drop until February.
Speaking to VRT News in Belgium, Mustii admitted that he’s not well-known in Flanders. But he’s definitely made a name for himself in French-speaking Belgium.
“Ever since I was little I wanted to be an actor and not a firefighter or a pilot,” he told the news site. “But I have also released two albums in the meantime. Now I have a double career: actor and singer. I see music as a form of theater by the way. Creating a total act. That’s why I said yes when they asked me for the Eurovision Song Contest.”
So how did he find out about the gig? His team broke the news while he was on the set of Drag Race Belgium.
“I was sitting in the make-up chair and I was still tired, someone from the team came to me in my whisper in my ear. I had to let it sink in.”
Mustii described his music as “pop with a dark edge” and said that he’s influenced by everything from new wave to rock.
“I contrast pop with fragile subjects, I like to play with them. My last album, for example, was a homage to my uncle who had schizophrenia.”
The EBU shared his official bio:
“In 2017, he landed a lead role alongside Mathilde Seigner in the French TV movie Je Voulais Juste Rentrer Chez Moi, in which he played the infamous Patrick Dils before playing Hamlet in 2019 under the direction of Emmanuel Dekoninck.”
“Alongside acting, Mustii has made a name for himself as a singer. With two albums to his credit, 21st Century Boy and It’s Happening Now, successful tours (selling out the Ancienne Belgique on 3 occasions) and winning the ‘Revelation of the Year’ trophy at the D6bels Music Awards, Mustii is known for seducing audiences with his captivating voice, which is both powerful and fragile at the same time.”
“Next year is set to be his busiest yet as not only will he represent Belgium at the Eurovision Song Contest in Sweden, but he’ll also return as a permanent judge on Drag Race Belgique (Season 2) and star in Michiel Blanchart’s next film La nuit se traîne alongside Romain Duris.”
What do you think? Are you familiar with Mustii’s music? Do you think he can top Gustaph’s result? Let us know down below…
Interesting choice, his cool and contemporary music might do well with both the televoters and jury’s. But what will happen if the Netherlands picks Joost Klein’s song , given the fact he’s so popular in a growing number of European country’s?
I don’t trust the Belgium jury, they judge a language not a song, the francophone jury gave zero points to the Diepte by S10 because it was in Dutch, the year before the Dutch speaking jury gave zero points to Barbara Pravi, because it was in French. Countries should be suspended for this kind of behavior. They should judge a song no matter what.
Need to say I absolutely love his voice. Drop any song to this guy, it will sound phenomenal
Fans hating someone they barely recognize with no song released. Classic lol.
Promising choice. “Blind” is a very good song, I agree with Loic Nottet’s comparision.
The draggification of Eurovision
You know he’s not a drag right? He’s gay, open minded and accepted to be part of Drag Race Belgium jury but it doesn’t mean he is gonna come in Malmö dressed like a drag queen. And even if he wants to, where is the problem of the song is good?
NEXT
How appropriate a name you chose! Well done…
Good luck to him but I can already sense that his act will be Käärijä-esque. Even his name looks Finnish. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
His stuff is literally nothing like Käärija and he’s been using that name for years lol
Please check his previous songs. Mustii has absolutely nothing to do with Käärijä.
Next year challenge: reveal your representative for 2025 just after the Grand Final results 2024.
The Esc Gods who decide everything love to see that motivation for their “contest”, Eleni Foureira, Duncan Lawrence, Noah Kirel among others were all announced very early and all got very good results so I see you Belgium, it’s clever knowing that next year Eurovision is precisely in the Esc Gods country!
Then the countries sure to be in the top 5 next year: Italy, Sweden, Belgium.
And for the bottom 5, the big 4 as always.
That’s Eurovision… predictable isn’t it?.
you know that the big four doesn’t exist since 2011, right?
Lol really!
And ad Ukraine in the top 5
He has an interesting vibe, reminds me a little bit of Loic Nottet.
Interesting how they’ve gone for someone related to Drag Race. Could be because of the audience shared by both Drag Race and Eurovision? I wouldn’t like them to be linked at all, there are too much stereotypes about Eurovision by now and one can’t argue the LGBTIQ community has taken over the contest in recent years.
Drag Race seems like a rather small part of Mustii’s biography— it’s only run for one season at this point— probably being pushed by the broadcaster for the cross-program synergy, I’m guessing. It doesn’t bother me at all, but it’s clear from this thread that it gives rise to stereotypes that aren’t borne out by the music.
he’s better than Loic
Feed Me is super catchy
New Becoming gives me goosebumps all over
good chances my votes are going to Belgium i think, me likey likey this style a lot
When you say the “one can’t argue the LGBTIQ community has taken over the contest”, are you referring to the fact the contest is queer-friendly and trans-friendly, that multiple contestants in a given year may be LGBTQIA+, or are you suggesting it’s too “flamboyant” and you don’t want to see the proud queerness that’s seen in Drag Race on stage at ESC?
It worked last year for Belgie to send a Old Gay Man , Sending the Twinks like Eliot has not seems to work . But Good Luck Belgia
oh god learn english
what do you even mean?
How rude . How you know its English that is not my First Language.? Get your Eyes and Ears checked asap
English isn’t my first language either.
But tbh, your first comment literally says everything about you.
I don’t think that Eurovision is the right spot for you
Please don’t judge people on their English skills, unfortunately good education isn’t available for everyone. I hope in 23/24 People will stay respectful over here, last year I left early because of all the hatred?
When you are 43 Bejda, you won’t be saying it is old.
Ok Fatima but when I’m Old , I will be still Beautiful because I will get Plastic Surgery and my Rich Husband will pay for this .
Blanka, is it you? You’re nasty like her, you seem to like plasric surgery like her and well… your pseudo.
Old gay man ? He is 42 …..is that old ?
Yes
Mustii is about to continue Belgium’s Top 10 streak and I am so there for it!! I love the way he conveys his strong personality through his music. Personally, I’d also love to see him sing in French, so he can be himself 100%. Bonne chance Mustii!!
It’s too early to talk about a top 10 ranking at this point , let’s wait for the song first ??
people here comparing him to MBD or even Gustaph have clearly not listened to any of the songs Mustii has released. they literally have nothing in common.
His music is amazing and more my taste than gustaphs and MBD’S. People need to stop comparing everyone
Michael Ben David vibes… uh oh
Actually, not really. Here’s a short video featuring snippets of his songs. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8fVLAEmxS0I
and why do you say this? They’re from 2 very different countries and cultures, they look completely different, they sound completely different. And they seem to have quite different personalities as well.
Unless it is because they’re both queer that makes you make this comparison and say “uh oh”. Wouldn’t be that, would it?
I think trying to repeat last years entry rarely works. Yes they are different but its still a flamboyant camp singer. That worked this year but may not work next year. But I wait for the song until I judge
Agreed!
Well, I don’t think you can call his music style “camp” per se. People said Gustaph was a copy of MBD, just because he so happened to be gay. People sometimes…
Well it was not a copy, but both were really flamboyant camp. Similar style. Difference was that Gustaph brought it class and accesibility where as Michael just was ” look at how faboulus I am”.
I’m not sure I’d call either camp.
he has literally nothing in common with Gustaph, whose style was basically flamboyant 90’s pop.
Mustii is dark pop with depeche mode influences.
I get some Talk Talk vibes at times.
Ah, nice, I’m not crazy here.
Benzine: Unavoidable question, what are your influences?
Thomas: My dad is a big vinyl eater, he played me Jethro Tull , the Jefferson Airplane , the Rolling Stones , and then I opened up to the 80s, bands like Talk Talk , Tears for Fears , Depeche Mode (… especially for the character of Dave Gahan ), Iggy Pop , Grace Jones , David Sylvian , Scott Walker … I like tense, fragile voices…
https://www.benzinemag.net/2022/04/18/interview-mustii-pour-moi-la-musique-est-une-filiation-de-lacting/
Gustaph and Mustii are totally different when it comes to their music. They’re not repeating last year only because he’s lgbtqi
Same here, so far I agree with you, will it be special enough, that’s the question, but for now I’m curious about the song, and all other songs to come ??
Girl, we have heard 0 seconds of the song. We’ve seen 0 seconds of the performance and staging. Just because Mustii is queer and a judge on drag race doesn’t mean we’re getting an exact copy of Gustaph.
Once again, Belgium announces the first artist for Eurovision. I had expected that they were going to internally select, but I thought they would be using the voice winner.
Getting the vibes of Alen Chicco. Well, if that is not us, happy for Belgium. I naively hope he will be voted for the song and show he brings, and not because of his inner identity, though.
Here’s Mr. Eurovision get to know video on Mustii so you can get a taste of his music style. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8fVLAEmxS0I
He’s very pretty 🙂
Hope he won’t sing as drag singer there.
What would be the problem?
I don’t think he will. I’d also prefer if he didn’t because 1. It’s been done more than once so it’s not really bringing anything new or original and 2. I think it runs the risk of distracting from the actual song/performance and some will just view it as a drag act or the guy singing in drag.
Also it’s very inauthentic.
Are you saying this because of Mustii being a judge on drag race? Just because someone is a judge doesn’t mean they actively perform in drag themselves. And even if he did, is there a concern with a drag performer singing at ESC?
I’m not a fan of his music, but his live vocals, music videos and overall aesthetic is great.
I really enjoyed Belgium’s Eurosong this year, why would they scrap it after a very successful result? Gustaph, Cherrine & Gala Dragot all had songs that were worthy of placing top 10 in Liverpool. Surely Mustii could’ve just participated in a NF, It’s not like he’s a national superstar and Belgium needed to cancel Eurosong for this opportunity.
Belgium has two participating broadcasters. They alternate every other year. The French speaking broadcaster always selects internally. Eurosong will be back in 2025.
Belgium has two broadcasters (Dutch and French language) who do the participation every other year. The current broadcaster, therefore, has nothing to do with the National final (they probably didn’t even broadcast it)
The French broadcaster could easily do one. I normally like the entries they send though.
French? Really?? Dude …
Agreed. Belgium’s NF was one of my favourites last year and an example of what to do for struggling countries at Eurovision.
2023 selection proved to be a success. No internal selection for 2024? Borinnnnnnnnng.
There was an internal selection. And they internally selected Mustii. Many other countries also internally select an artist. Many have in the past and many will in the future. Don’t necessarily see how this is “Borinnnnnnnnng.”
love this choice, very Hozier influenced
his live vocals are simply sensational too
we are in for a treat from Wallonia
Micheal Ben David 2.0 enjoy your non qualification Belgium
Didn’t you say the exact same thing about Gustaph…*eyeroll
Who says that their songs are similar? And that their behaviour is the same?
Funny how last year the exact same comments were made about Gustaph. I guess he proved everyone wrong that a classy ‘camp’ song can still get a high ranking 😉
His song was very catchy and jazzy and he performed it well live. Why don’t we wait until later to defend this guy?
Am I the only one who didn’t think Gustaph’s song was ‘camp’ first and foremost? It’s main appeal was that is was sung well by an engaging performer. I know, I was two back from the stage in semi 2.
I remember him and his outfit, but strange enough I couldn’t remember the song. But it’s just me I couldn’t even remember Loreen’s
The more I read your comments the more I realize how ignorant you are.
Please don’t put yourself above others, calling other people ignorant because they share a different opinion is disrespectful.
They said that about Gustaph too…
Gustaph had a 90s inspired song and this type of music has become popular again. I don’t expect Mr Mustii to make something similar.
Michael Ben David 2.0? Not even close! Before judging someone, get the to know the artist better….I learned that too…
Hot take: MBD was good. Not sure about this guy.
but he didnt’t qualify. So he must not have being that good
With this kind of act, I’m worried the personality will come before the music… but I like that “Shame” song. I’m optimistic.
After listening to him for 45 minutes or so, I think they’re doing him dirty by leading with the ‘Drag Race judge’ bit. This guy is good.
Exactly my thought!! Just listened to his two albums…if he would enter the competition with any of about 7 songs from these two albums, he would be in it to win it…!
He cant ,the song must be released during Eurovision 2024 seasons. Those song from the album were released wayyyyy before.
He is best known by many in Europe as a Drag Race Belgique judge. That doesn’t mean he does drag, and I’m confused as to how stating his job title is “doing him dirty”.
It’s copy-paste time:
“Drag Race seems like a rather small part of Mustii’s biography— it’s only run for one season at this point— probably being pushed by the broadcaster for the cross-program synergy, I’m guessing. It doesn’t bother me at all, but it’s clear from this thread that it gives rise to stereotypes that aren’t borne out by the music.”
He’s been releasing music– really good music!– since 2015. And acting too. Identifying him first as a Drag Race judge trivializes him. It’s relevant to mention, but not the most important thing. It’s like third-paragraph stuff.
It’s once again Belgium who is the first to reveal their artist x)
För those who interested: 21st century boy….GREAT SONG!!!!
yes, first song i listened to when i googled him just now, very great song indeed
good looking guy as well
No way! He’s been in my top wishlist for Belgium since last year, and it’s really coming! His discography has been very impressive so far. I’d especially recommend to listen to “Simple Slave”, “21st Century Boy”, “Alien”, and “Skyline”.
well belgium got one of their best results last year with a flamboyant gay man past the age of 30 so i can see why they’re keeping the same formula
That’s the only thing they have in common. Musically. Mustii is very different from Gustaph.
I wish him good luck with a good song. I like his voice
I only know Thomas Mustin from several francophone TV series and specially as the talented actor from Je Voulais Juste Rentrer Chez Moi but his musical stuff seems as attractive and promising.
Whilst a lot of people will be celebrating that we are getting a diverse ‘drag’ act for one of only a few times at Eurovision, I am hoping he is true to himself and performs without as much of that as possible since he looks dashing and professional without it anyway. With the exception of the song from Norway’s national final last year and some of the 00s songs, there are very few drag or ‘colourful’ acts that have done well or are deserving of being mentioned in my opinion. I am hoping Belgium can keep it classy like they’ve… Read more »
I’d encourage you to reflect on your presumptions of drag and whether you actually are hoping he is “true to himself” if you’re also specifying how you personally think he should look and act (i.e. “without as much of that [drag] as possible”).
By the way: Mustii is a judge, not a regular drag performer.
Announcing before the official season even starts. We are being spoilt again.
And the ESC 2024 train is officially moving!
The excitement is back with this announcement, hopefully Belgium can keep their spot in the top-10 with this act
Can he bring Priyanka? You know, the Winner of Canada S1 where she beat Rita who’s Belgium’s host.
She’s the only one without a playlist in my Spotify she fits in and I’d love to add her somewhere.
Nikki, you know that can’t do that after what happened in Montreal.
