Eurovision is coming to Malmö in 2024. And now Swedish broadcaster SVT is pouring through a total of 2,624 entries that have been submitted for Melodifestivalen 2024, its national selection for Eurovision.

That’s 200 fewer than the the 2,824 song submissions they received for Melodifestivalen 2023, but more than the 2,530 entries they received in 2022.

No matter. It’s a lot of songs and interest is clearly high.

“The intensive work of the selection process begins now,” says Karin Gunnarsson, competition producer.

She ain’t here to play.

The goal is to produce a hit, and a lovely and engaging line-up. It is extra fun that one of the entries will get to represent Sweden here at home in the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö.”

Melodifestivalen 2024: Producers receive 2,624 song submissions

As you know, this year’s Melodifestivalen will have a total of 30 competing entries rather than 28. And they’ll compete across five heats rather than four heats and a “save me” semi-final.

Karin Gunnarsson will now choose half of this year’s line-up with the assistance of a jury group.

According to the official Melodifestivalen Instagram account: “The other 15 are selected by SVT during the autumn.”

Yet the same handful of names are the writers of the final 28 songs or is it 30 next year?

It’s 30 next year, seems a bit silly to even have this many when around 20 of them are sacrificial sheeps.

If there really is 2 624 submissions where 30 are being selected, there would be a slim chance of seeing even one songwriter in more than two songs, unless most of these are just pure garbage.

Same names popping every year basicly means that the true number isn’t even close to what they say.

Well, there’s no way they’ll win twice in a row so i guess people who believe they have potential eurovision winner will skip the year

And it won’t be one in Swedish which goes on to win. So predictable.

The Melfest entries of recent vintage that I’ve loved have been by Dotter, Clara Klingenstrom, and Ida-Lova from last year… notably two of those were in Swedish, though the Swedes seem really stubborn about not sending a Swedish song.

I would like a song in Swedish and more folk than usual. Jon Henrik Fjällgren and Nordman come into my mind. It would be a great opportunity for something like that now that Sweden is hosting the contest.

A few composers who have stable connection with jury panels will once again be chosen, so we’ll end up with 14 songs writtennby the same old same old group of people, despite their songs were probably not even for best top 100 of that selection. Corruption and nepotism at its best. Swedish people should boycot those songs the moment they come out, and not vote them at all

So, basically, they/SVT/MelfestKaren will “choose” ALL of them.

Good Option for Sweden is to Send Song in Swedish Language to show Culture because he is PreQualified . But Next Year , I think Sweden Should Have to Withdraw Until The Broadcasting Can Handle this Corruption

People complaining about the format that has given them 3 victories between 2012 and 2023. Every other country would KILL for those results. And yes, I would like more musical diversity. But changes will only really happen when they start getting their definition of bad results.

Having said all that, what do I want the most? Your in the final already. Please send Mariette. Give her the chance she so richly deserves.

Exactly! If it ain’t a problem, why fix it?
As long as the result keeps giving good results, which is what SVT ainns for to keep up the interest, it is not going to change

With the juries saving their a** in 2015 and 2023 and being extra lucky in 2012 for having an actual banger of a song.

The official results, which are the only results that matter, confirms 3 wins.
All three entries got enough support from both groups to win, no ” rescue” was needed.
Discrediting any win or slagging off winners as just ” jury winners or just ” audience winners is petty. No one except for people on here, even cares about jury or audience winners.

What happened to Wiwibloggs? For me, this used to be the number 1 Eurovision news site, but those times are long gone. Still no article about Slovakia, who have announced their intention to return in 2025 for like a week now? Nothing on North Macedonia, who are heavily rumored to be back in 2024? This article is like one day behind every other news source as well. Seriously, what happened?

I’d like to see Peter Bjorn and John. They can easily rival any great pop hooks out there, and have interesting lyrics. Sadly because they’re three 50ish men and not 20ish prettyboys they probably wouldn’t stand a chance or even be invited. Sad.

I feel like years when Sweden hosts don’t have the best Melfest as lots of artists probably don’t think they can have Sweden twice in a row. With that said, last year felt like lots of folks opted out cause the rumor was always Loreen having a Euphoria 2.0 entry. So would be interesting who makes it to Melfest this year.

My thoughts exactly, Melodifestivalen 2013 & 2016 were quite weak and winners weren’t that good, but was there honestly anything better in offer? Not really, none of those songs saw life after the contest was over.

Depends how we count biggest, Spotify streams shouldn’t be the main value as different platforms are used in different countries. On Melodifestivalen 2016 none of the songs got longevity, so once next batch comes the old ones have already vanished and this problem seems to get bigger and bigger each year.

There’s a massive amount of songs that have been around for years, sold and released by other artists (Uh oh Anna Book!) and complete mess of songs. The reality is that around 2,2k of these are useless.

Names we’ll see in several entries: Anderz Wrethov, Thomas G:son, Palle Hammarlund, Fredrik Kempe, David Kreuger, Joy Deb, Linnea Deb, Jimmy Jansson, Jimmy “Joker” Thörnfeldt, Peter Boström etc.

Good thing the semifinal is gone but I wish they skip the process of choosing ” second chances”.
Why not instead have four heats with three qualifiers in each? You still get 12 songs in final and they all will be competetive songs instead of just being there. Cause if you are not strong enough to reach top 3 on first impact how strong of a chance do you have?

All of those submissions just to end up choosing the same mid, basic, dated and formulaic English pop songs, written and produced by the usual names.
Are we sure these are actual submissions and not a random number brought by the broadcaster to save face?

It’s practically a given we’re going to see the names Thomas G:son, Joker Thornfeldt, Jimmy Jansson, Joy/Linnea Deb on most of the song credits in the final anyway. If they hit the mark like “Tattoo” I’ll be okay with that, but apparently it’s too much to ask for a Swedish-language song or an entry that doesn’t sound factory-produced. And could we stay away from the cheesy/nonsense lyrics/titles like “Dance You Off,” “a million voices/a million choices,” “it will come a day where we will find a way,” “never give up,” “heroes of our time/dancing with the demons of our minds,”… Read more »

What am I hoping to see in Melodifestivalen 2024? Aside from an obviously well-produced and fun show, I want to see a diverse line-up of songs. I want to see different songwriters behind different entries. I don’t mind seeing someone co-writing two songs, but it would be a lovely surprise if the same 6 people weren’t behind 90% of the repertoire. Moreover, I want to see some unpredictability in voting and running order. While I wouldn’t mind Sweden aiming for a back-to-back, if they deserve to, I don’t want to see them going for a song that is ”obviously designed… Read more »
