On the day Cyprus confirmed that Silia Kapsis will sing at Eurovision 2024, the Eurofandom braced for a triple threat. Silia, a singer, actor and dancer, seems poised to deliver an eye-catching stage show in Malmö.
And if you doubt her ability to move — you really shouldn’t — then check out this clip from the recent Dance Around the World solo competition at the Australia Dance Festival.
Nodding to Barbie mania, which has swept the world following this summer’s blockbuster hit, Silia let the rhythms and sounds of Aqua’s “Barbie Girl” take over her body
Silia showcased her playful side wearing pink trousers and a fitted white top as she vibrated across the stage as if she’d just absorbed several megawatts of electricity.
The choreography seemed to depict Silia as a doll coming to life with stop-and-go motions at the start, like she was a marionette being yanked about. But as the performance progressed she took full control and proved that Barbie is most definitely ready for the party!
We aren’t surprised. As the Cypriot team made clear just a few weeks ago when revealing her as their artist, she’s a seasoned performer. They wrote:
“Silia has danced with world-renowned choreographers, performing in their global dance showcases in Australia and the USA, was selected for the ImmaBeast Dance Company in Los Angeles, danced with Stephen tWitch Boss on the Jennifer Hudson Show and was featured in a dance documentary produced by Taboo from the Black-Eyed Peas. Throughout her dance career, Silia has also been awarded numerous awards and scholarships including the prestigious BuildaBeast 2019 Sydney Scholarship.”
Still don’t believe them? Then watch her burning the dance floor to Cardi B’s “Hot Sh**” to choreo from the incredible Matt Steffanina.
top 5 confirmed for Cyprus!
I’ll be the first to admit that I know nothing about dance, but I find the kind of dancing in these videos too aggressive and jarring tbh. I didn’t enjoy Noa Kirel’s dance-break for the same reason.
I agree… it is performative movement, but does it count as “dancing”? Not sure.
I do know some things about dance, and what I get from this is that she has a lot of technical skill (those jerky kinds of motions are called isolations and they are hard to do cleanly especially in succession like that). However, each of the two choreos in the clips above show a couple of cool moments where the dance really works with the music and the flow of the dance… and then she just defaults back to the same few stock moves for the rest of it. It gives one trick pony vibes. I am inclined to think… Read more »
Barbie Girl was part of the 2001 interval act in Copenhagen let’s not forget.
One of my all time fav performances. Aqua hits were just great and so was the staging along with Safri Duo
