Norwegian broadcaster NRK has told the Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet that it’s letting the European Broadcasting Union take the lead regarding Israel’s participation in Eurovision 2024.

The news comes after the EBU revealed that 37 countries have confirmed for the song contest in Malmö, including Israel.

The country’s participation is highly controversial and a major talking point on social media, with many Eurovision fans saying Israel’s response to the October 7 attacks has overstepped, pointing to the staggering civilian death toll in Gaza. Many Israelis counter that their country was attacked and has every right to defend itself and to pursue Hamas terrorists.

Dagbladet asked NRK whether it had a position on Israel’s participation. Responding by e-mail, NRK’s director of entertainment Charlo Halvorsen said:

“It is natural that questions about participation in the Eurovision Song Contest for a country at war arise. We have not yet taken a position on this matter, but are following what the EBU decides.”

Dagebladet asked the EBU’s press team whether the issue of Israel’s participation had been discussed and received this vague answer.

“We are in the process of finalizing the list of public broadcasters that will participate in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2024. When the preparations are complete, the entire list of participants will be published in full.”

They said they had no comment beyond that.

NRK was among the first public broadcasters who called for Russia to be excluded from Eurovision 2022 following its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Broadcasters in Ukraine, Sweden, Denmark, The Netherlands, Lithuania, Iceland, Finland, and Estonia issued similar statements.

So far no public broadcasters have made public calls to remove Israel, suggesting that their participation is not currently under threat.

It will be such a waste if Israel wins this year especially since it seems all countries try to send their very best. I hope people will vote based on music and not politics.

Dear all,   I strongly disagree with your perspectives. An article in a Norwegian publication, which expresses biased views against Israel, seems to have influenced many of you. It’s disheartening to witness the propagation of such hate.   I urge you to delve into history, expand your knowledge, and reconsider your stance towards the only Jewish state.   The ongoing conflict isn’t merely about land or a clash between Israelis and Palestinians; it’s a battle against a terrorist organization that holds its civilians captive. Let’s not forget who voted for this group to govern Gaza – yes, it’s the Gazans… Read more »

It’s a complete disgrace that European countries were able to take a firm stance and exerted pressure over the EBU on Russia (and rightly so), and yet they do nothing about Israel and Azerbaijan. This year may be most blatantly obvious but both countries have of course done heinous things for years and then whitewashed (and in Israel’s case specifically) also pinkwashed their image in front of the Eurovision audience. I’m not the biggest fan of taking it out on the artists themselves, but the press & fans in the arena should make their voices be heard if no one… Read more »

Speaking of labels, why are those held by H a m a s called “hostages”, but those held by Israel are called “prisoners”? It seems that people have some image of what a terrorist looks like, and a well-spoken well-educated well-shaven man in a suit and tie is not it.

But even if they do accept them as member, they would have to air the Israeli act, all the LGBTQ+ friendly content & other permissive acts – which is not something they’re likely to go along with.

Im boycotting Eurovision this year if Israel is allowed to participate.
We rightly expelled Russia, now we must do the same with Israel. They will no doubt submit a eurofan pandering “bop” but we must make a clear stand.
Eurofans must not live in their own little bubble and accept the participation of a state that openly declares gen0c1de, and is committing abhorrent crimes against humanity.
It is Palestine today, who will it be tomorrow?

Saying it’s Israeli hatred is a lazy comeback. There videos out there in the public sphere of Nethanyahu openly calling for gen0c1de by quoting Amalek.
There’s also videos of chief rabbis, who’s also a military commander (but if a conflict of interest there) legitimising the r@pe of non Jewish women.
I mean it’s ALL there if you want to do a quick search for it, in fact I implore that you do.
However if you condone this, then go right ahead and vote for them, then I hope you can sleep easy at night.

Yeah I mean very tactical to put your base under a hospital with the most vulnerable because then your like well they can’t hit us here as it’ll make them look bad. It really irritates me and makes my blood boil that those on the left will ignorantly and blatantly take a blind eye to Hamas, Hamas are terrorists not freedom fighters, also if your lgbt why support an islamic side that will no doubt be homophobic.

WOW so many in the comments has swallowed the western propaganda, i stopped believing in the media outlet about a week in to the war…it is ridiculous how the media is trying to get people on Israels side on this..feel sick to my stomach… no Israel should be banned to participate 2024! They have committed war crimes worse than Russia and therefore just like Russia and even Belarus get suspended from participating. If they participate then EBU is ok with apartheid and racism.

“As a result, the entire nation was made to wander in the desert for 40 years, until almost the entire generation of men had died.” That’s Joshua 5:6 for you. Anna Karenina is indeed correct stating the irony in your comment. You came to the lands of Palestine and colonized, it was never Palestinians who came settled in your lands because you had no land – you were banished from Egypt. Facts from your own sacral fairytales.

I didn’t say Jews were indigenous to the land, though. That land is no man’s land, if we go down that path. The point is, Arabs have 21 states and Jews only have one (not to mention that there used to be sizeable Jewish communities on most Arab states until the 40s)

Benjamin Netanyahu is the villain here. He HATES public television. He’s already shut down IBA, and wants to do the same with Kan. I can understand a union of broadcasters wanting to stand with one of their own, it is what unions are for.

Just putting that out there as an argument for letting Israel stay, not necessarily that I agree with it.

Arguably no, because Russia is not a democracy. Putin turned it into his own personal propaganda machine, it suits him to keep it open. Whereas Bibi wants to shut down Kan because he is afraid of it.

Fair enough. Although I would argue that probably quite a number of the remaining participating broadcasters are being used as propaganda machines of sorts. Not just AliyevTV.

I too have heard this story. I believe it because of the cover up that happened aboard a US ship in the 1980s. It was sunk by the Israeli navy but was NEVER talked about. Israel are pulling Europe, America and the West’s strings. They have multiple pressure groups in other countries and near positions of power. Just look at the ‘Friends of Israel’ group in British politics! Almost all ‘Conservative’ party members. Not one is saying ‘we need to focus on our own country for a change’. We’re sick and tired of people having ‘special interests’ since the Iraq… Read more »

Israel was attaked and has every right to defend itself. If you ban them you’d need to ban Ukraine and Armenia.

H4ms are ter. ror. ists and Israel has every right to wipe out H4ms, just as the west collectively wiped out IS IS.
Casualties are from H4ms using civilian infrastructure for military purposes, using human shields, and even shoting Gaz ans who try to flee.

I’m surprised then why are you shocked to see many Europeans and Americans becoming less and less tolerant of Islamic fundamentalists who come to the West as asylum seekers just to massively kill them later on. I’d say the West is waking up short, too many fundamentalists were let in, integrations didn’t work, it’s time for them to be sent home with a one-way ticket.
