The road to Malmö is well underway, as Slovenia becomes the latest country to reveal their Eurovision 2024 artist and song title.

Raiven, a mezzo-soprano singer, author, songwriter, and harpist, will represent Slovenia with her song ‘Veronika’. You’ll have to wait to hear the song: it won’t be revealed until 2024.

Raiven is renowned for her ‘popera’ style of music, which fuses elements of pop music and opera. She’s a familiar face to veteran viewers of EMA, Slovenia’s national Eurovision selection format until 2022. Who remembers Črno Bel, Zažarim, or KAOS from over the years?

Those songs finished second, third and second respectively. Her consistently highly placement confirms her position as a Slovenian fan favourite.

In a statement Raiven said that representing Slovenia is a matter of fulfilling her childhood destiny:

“Representing Slovenia at Eurovision is a stepping stone I envision for my career’s progression. When I told my mother I was going to Eurovision, she said she knew I would be standing on that stage one day. She knew it since the first time we were watching this music spectacle together – I was five years old.”

The song itself is based on Veronika Deseniška (or, Veronika of Desenice) a well-known figure in Slovenian history and folklore. Raiven describes her song as ‘the symphony of the Sirens’ and draws upon not only Veronika’s supposed witchcraft, but the stories of several legendary female figures from across history.

“Veronika was one of the first three songs I created for my upcoming EP Sirene, and from the beginning, I participated in its creation as a producer,” said Raiven, who, as in her previous works, is credited as the author of the music and lyrics.

“Veronika” will be premiered by Raiven in a special show on RTV Slovenija on January 20, 2024.

“Veronika” will be included on her upcoming EP “Sirene”, which is set to be released on February 17, 2024. The songs that she will place on this EP are based on exploring the stories of iconic women from different historical periods. Raiven will bring the symphony of Sirens to her audience at a concert in Cankarjev Dom on April 21, 2024, celebrating a decade of musical creation and research.

By the way, something the article doesn’t mention and was announced today: ballet dancers from the Slovene National Opera will be part of her performance. I think we should expect something ethereal.

Raiven’s not very popular in Slovenia because she comes across as very stuck-up in her interviews (in one of them she described people who didn’t like Kaos as “commoners”). She’s been heavily promoted by the national broadcaster for years now but you rarely see her mentioned in any non-state-owned media. It’s no secret she’s dreaming of a huge stardom but with that kind of off-putting energy she emanates it just isn’t happening anytime soon. Her debut album was actually very good but she later stopped working with the team behind it – she complained of those songs not being true… Read more »

Darling, she has a style and nothing is wrong with that. And she is well known in Slovenia, not only heavy promoted by RTVSLO. I don’t know if you’re from Slovenia but I’m telling you that Raiven is a MUSICIAN with talent, all her songs have meaning and Veronika is based on a real person (If you are Slovene you know who is Veronika Deseniška) and why not produce her own music if she can? Should she have Raay producing her songs? NO! So don’t be jelaous and envy if her music is not your cup of tea. I believe… Read more »

RAIVEN!!! goes to Malmö!! it finally worked out and since 2016 she should have been there a long time ago, at Eurovision in Slovenian colors, I am very curious what she is preparing for Eurovision in Malmö, or maybe Electro opera Raiven feels good on stage and you can see the camera work is excellent with her, I am satisfied with the decision of RTV SLO

P.S. what is important is that Raiven is also a psychotherapist

It has been a long time since we’ve seen Slovenia break the top 10, if Raiven can make it that high. Wouldn’t it be cool if we have a lot of underdog countries do very well at eurovision 2024, maybe somebody winning for the first time?

That would be perfect as it become a bit boring to see same counties win. Someone new would be a breath of fresh air!

Her first attempt, ?rno Bel, was by far the best and should have represented Slovenia in Stockholm instead of Manu. Might have gotten Slovenia to the final. I did not like her last attempt, Sebi was the right winner there. So, I suppose it could go either way. I’m ready to be amazed. A little criticism for the broadcaster though: I feel like these internal selections are a cost cutting measure. The fact that they had originally planned a tiny NF with only 4 songs instead of the usual 10-20 before canceling the NF altogether supports that assumption. Also, I… Read more »

It depends on the song and internally selected artist. It also shows that they were confident Raiven would EASILY win.

Actually no, it doesn’t show that. It shows they made their choice internally.

I swear, the voting this year was so bad. 16th in the televote. 19th with the juries. But then, 21st overall. Like, come on, at least put them in the top 20.

The Voice of Reason

There were like four or five rock songs this year. They all cancelled each other out in the televote and then there was KAARIJA who stole votes from them and MULTIPLE countries. In the end it was worth it to ensure Kaarija won the televote.

Countries award points to 10 different entries. Käärijä took a whole of 12s, that still left lots of possible 10s, 8s, 7s, 6s… I don’t see how he stole any votes. Countries wanted him to win pretty much unanimously. There’s lots of space left between 2nd and 21st.

Ooooh! What a GREAT choice! Raiven was on my ‘ones to watch list’ for about year now since I saw her amazing performance of ‘Kaos’ which narrowly missed out at going to Eurovision in 2019, Trumped only by Zalagasper, but if they hadn’t participated with Sebi, you could tell Raiven would have EASILY won! Her songs are unique, catchy, dance-filled and competitive. She has so much potential and I wanted to see her at one of the future EMAs. However, i’ll easily take this! With broadcaster funding, I expect something GREAT in Malmo! And the topic of the song seems… Read more »

Slovenia is really stepping up lately, they know exactly what the fans want, we are being spoiled for the 2nd year in a row haha I do feel bad for all those artists who submitted entries for the national final only for it to get cancelled again, but at least they can keep these songs for possible future NFs as long as they don’t release them And let’s be real, the way Slovenian public be voting sometimes, it’s probably better if the broadcaster chooses the main favorite just like that, there’s no way of being sure that Raiven would win… Read more »
