If you watched Gåte’s live performance during Semi-Final 2 of Norway’s Melodi Grand Prix, then you know that there was a lot going on. Smoke, a spinning stage, lasers, fog, attractive mesh clothing — they were giving you everything.
And behind the looks and theatrics was a very complicated story, which the band explained to our Anne after they qualified to the final.
“It’s a medieval ballad and the story is about a young maiden with an evil stepmother…she transforms her into a wolf and bans her to the woods unless she kills her own brother…”
Notice that we left a lot of ellipses there. This story is complicated. Watch our interview to learn more.
Do you think they can win it all? Do you hope that they do? Shout out in the comments below!
Hope Norway won’t retire so this entry could have the chances to win it all
This song isn’t appealing and by far not a winner of ESC. Screaming, it lacks melody. Non qualifier more likely.
Their entry is really, really, really good. I was surprised by their stage presence and the song on their semifinal. What a moment! However, I prefer KEiiNO’s and I think they would have a much bigger chance in Eurovision. ?
Keiino has no chance at Eurovision, they’ll get nothing from the jury.
Gåte is without any doubt the most out of the box of all the MGP contestants. Maybe one of the few acts in the NFs that can challenge Olly Alexander for the victory in Malmö along with 5miinust x Puuluup.
We haven’t even heard the UK song yet?
I think they are clear winners so far. They have the package. I heard Norway is using some kind of technical and for the voice. Is that the case then her voice might be less impressive in Malmö.
Gåte is one of the bands using no autotune whatsoever. She’s just that good. They’re known as one of the best live bands in Norway for a reason.
Nothing against them but the song has 0 chance to succeed in Eurovision. This is just too much. Maybe it could qualify for the final as it is now 100% televote in the semis and public tends to like chaos more than juries but still I’m not sure the public would be easily convinced.
And yeah basically she screams.
That being said, the song is far from being bad and I recognize its uniqueness. But I trust my guts that are usually right and I think this would not be a good choice for Malmö.
Could happen a Spain 2023?
I think it could do well, but if not, so be it. Results aren’t worth sacrificing identity for. There is no doubt that Norway would be “represented” by this.
Of course the artists shouldn’t sacrifice their identity. And if Norway wants to send them to Eurovision then so be it. I’m not saying Norwegians aren’t allowed to vote for them. I just think it wouldn’t be a wise choice imo.
Thing is, we don’t have another good option. Like we know exactly what will happen with Keiino, they’re sending a much trashier song than they did in 2019. Anyone who thinks they have a chance with the jury is kidding themselves. Gåte is exciting and different from anything else. It could top 5, it could not, but I’m completely certain Keiino won’t top 5.
I don’t understand complaints about “screaming” or vocal cracks. This is art. Emotive expression, not a scale test. I love it.
It HAS to be Gåte for Norway this year. This is unique and professional.
For me it would be the best norwegian entry since 1995.
This will never qualify for the final if it goes to ESC. She screams.
I remember a Albanian entry consisting nearly only of screaming finishing 5th …
I like this song very much. It’s great. I hope that this song will be the winner for Sweden.
Literally so incredible. Haunting voice, captivating performance, and intriguing lyrics. I love the Norwegian language too. Definitely could contend for top 5 if it wins MGP
How overrated is this? Their performance is boring. It’s the same from start to finish and her voice cracks in some places. I love this genre as a scandinavian myself, but this feels like a B- movie.
I completely agree. The performance is very static and i don’t like those shouty vocals at all.
Knowing you, it would come from Sweden you would say it’s a potential esc winner. Overrated means nothing, people love it that’s all, and as a typical eurofan you can’t stand the fact that something is loved.
I guess I have to accept they are gonna win MGP even though I don’t like their song at all. To each their own taste but I’m genuinely curious if this will do well on Eurovision. Well at least a lot of the fans seem to like it. ??
Just wish I did too lol ?
I respect Margaret and Keiino for their previous entries, but judging just on the songs in this year’s MGP, it has to be Gåte for Norway. Amazing performance – Ulveham will go very far in Eurovision and challenge for the top.
