Nebulossa – Zorra Benidorm Fest

Hola España! This week we’re heading to Benidorm for Spain’s Eurovision national selection. It all kicked off with semi-final 1 on Tuesday night, where eight acts competed in the first round of Benidorm Fest 2024.

Taking place at Palau Municipal d’Esports l’Illa de Benidorm, the show is being hosted by Eurovision 2014 star Ruth Lorenzo alongside Marc Calderó. Meanwhile, Ana Prada will be in the green room.

I dont want to shade any artist/Song but being realistic Brillos Platinos has no chances of winning Eurovision or ending Up top 10. No Matter the staging, I dont see juries voting for It massively. I think It IS the kind of song that might get some 4,3,2,1s and an ocasional 6,7.
Anyway if he IS the chosen one I am happy.

Well, as I said in a comment below, it’s so funny seeing foreign eurofans complaining about the televote winners not going through while among the Spanish fans the question is: who the hell voted for Mantra?
TVE already said that they’ll try to implement a free voting app for next year. I think that says all.

Yo entendo los comentarios. Desde fuera se tiene que ver raro y no justo del todo. A mi me pasaría igual creo.

I did not know them but on Christmas they were on a music program and they sang another of their songs. I never listen to the radio and not only that song sounded familiar, I even knew the chorus so that means they are known in Spain and might have some fans.

The televote winner Mantra not qualifying is criminal! I felt so bad for the female vocal crying – she won the televote and learned at the same time that she’s not going to the final. Unbelievable. Benidorm WHAT are you doing???

If Nebulossa wins will the ESC rule for no profanity apply for them? Maneskin had to change their lyrics and Citi Zeni couldn’t say “veggies and…” Z*rra is literally the title of the song and is sung throughout, and as a Spanish speaker “it’s not a term one usually hears in civilized conversation” (to quote the great Hermione Granger).

Benidorm Fest isn’t serving us quality this year. I genuinely think it peaked in the first edition and has been going downhill since. You’d think that they would’ve stepped their game up after Chanel placed 3rd, but they’ve done the opposite.

Sofia Coll was the best of a bad bunch in my opinion. None of the songs in this semi were outstanding or deserving to go to Malmo. A huge disappointment overall.

Slomo was a bang average as a song–but EXCEPTIONAL as a total package.
Chanel was a top-level performer, stunning dancer and strong vocally.
These entrants this year have Slomo-level songs without a Chanel to deliver it.

Nebulossa might be a hit in Spain because she sings and repeats the Word Zorra (yes, people are that basic) if instead of Zorra she said something else It would not be such a hit.
Since for non Spanish Eurofans the Word Zorra has no connotations, they see the song in itself and they see how weak it was.
To send Nebulossa to Esc would be sending a song for all the Wrong reasons.

It is true that once the winner of the Benidorm Fest 2024 and, therefore, Spanish representative in Eurovision is known, there is time to improve, change things, look for the best, but last night so many things were missing and there were so many mistakes that it is scary to think what is happening with the Benidorm Fest. No, this is not true. Sofia Coll has been very much hyped by the foreign eurofans, but not by the Spanish ones. For example, she finished first in the Wiwibloggs survey, while the first one in the Eurovision Spain (main Spanish eurofans site), the winner was Almacor.
Same with the rankings you can see in Youtube: for foreigners, it is either Sofia or Jorge Gonzalez (although some go for St. Pedro); for the Spaniards, first is either St Pedro, Almacor or Nebulossa (Sofia normally gets 4th or 5th place after Maria Pelae).

ThorBeta

So it will most likely be between st. Pedro and Nebulossa then? I just don’t think that Almacor will have enough jury points to win.
And also, how did Angy manage to do better than Nebulossa in the televoting yesterday? Is it because of the low viewing figures? That was the biggest surprise for me yesterday given that “Zorra” has gone viral in Spain.

Angy is a very well known person in Spain. She is popular since she was 15/16, she went through some problems… in general, she is the kind of person who is “loved” by the entire country. Plus the performance was very good.
And regarding it being between st Pedro and Nebulossa… we don’t know yet, who would have expected Nebulossa’s performance actually be that good? Everybody was scared that we would have another Fusa Nocta case.

Ah ok it makes sense then. It sounds like it was basically a vote of liking the artist than the actual song. I expect that this won’t play an equally big role in the final, although I guess she will still finish high in the public vote.

I don’t know why Spanish fans haven’t realised it after 2 years of BeFest but the winner is basically determined by the juries, which practically means that Angy and Sofia are out of contention. Nebulossa won semi 1 and until semi 2 takes place they are the ones to beat in the final.

Yes, they should be in the top 2. But as the second semifinal seems to be the strongest one (with St Pedro, Almacor, Maria Pelae and even Jorge Gonzalez and Marlena), it may be that this doesn’t happen this year (if those in the second semifinal have good performances, of course).

I don’t really agree that semi 2 is stronger from a jury only perspective. Sure st. Pedro seems to be the talking point, but Almacor, Jorge and Marlena don’t have jury friendly songs and I think the jury will be reluctant with Maria Pelae after last year’s failure. It all remains to be seen but I think Nebulossa have built the right momentum to win it.

I don’t consider Zorra to be a jury friendly song, still it finished first with the jury in the first semifinal… so, who knows? Maybe Almacor’s performance is good and this jury give a good punctuation to him. We tend to see juries as people who only go for ballads, but it is not necessarily so.

Angy might still have a shot, but yeah jury determines the winner. Let’s not pretend that this is 50/50 system cause it’s not, the maximum numher of points the song can get from televoting and demoscopic jury is 16 points less than it can get from jury.

ThorBeta

No, she doesn’t really have a chance unless there’s another jury in the final (see the Tanxuguieras example). The voting system in BeFest doesn’t allow a song to win unless it’s first with the juries or at least very close to first. Angy was 22 points behind Nebulossa in the jury voting and I can’t see how this will reverse.

The opposite actually! Angy scored better than Nebulossa in two of the categories, so depending on how the second semi final songs score in relationship to them, Angy could actually close Nebulossa’s lead or actually pass them. If Angy outscores a few of Thursday’s finalists (and those finalists outperform Nebulossa), she could still pull out a victory.

ThorBeta
ThorBeta

Reply to  Thin Mint

You are aware though that these 2 categories have equal value to the jury (technically jury has more value actually because they can assign more than 80 points to the first song while if a song wins both demoscopic jury and televoting they get 80 points). Angy finished 3rd with the juries yesterday 22 whole points behind Nebulossa. Than means that if the juries vote similarly in the final -which have been doing in the last 2 years- Angy will need to be at least 2 to 3 places in both demoscopic juries and televoting above Nebulossa to rank higher.… Read more »

The thing is Angy won the demoscópico and was the qualifier with the highest televote. If she got the 40 instead of Mantra it would have put her 7 points away from the lead. I think unless Sofia changes some things in the final she isn’t in contention sadly, but Angy still has a shot. It depends on how the juries behave with the semifinal 2 entries, which seem to be a stronger batch of songs. They could take some points away from Nebulossa in the final. All in all Angy’s not out yet!

Sure, you realise though that the fault of your argument is exactly that even if Angy won the televoting she would have the maximum possible 80 points from televoting+demoscopic but she would still be 7 points short. So where is going to find these extra points? These could only come from the juries meaning that the juries will need to change their minds completely. It’s possible but I wouldn’t bet on it. There is of course also the possibility that Angy will triumph on Saturday and win both votes while Nebulossa will tank both votes (unlikely since they were already… Read more »

For me, the natural thing would have been:

1st – Angy, because she is really very popular in Spain since she was a teenager and her performance was very good
2nd – Nebulossa, because, as you say, it is a viral hit.

So it makes sense that Mantra votes are actually “not natural” because that would have been the expected result.

Best vocals: Noam, Angy Best props: Sofia, Lérica Best songs: Zorra, Sé quien soy Best wow moments: the Butts, Angy and her dancers hugging, Sofia revealing the stairs. Angy won the night overall for me, Nebulossa it was very cool, very sexy, very brothel but I didn’t feel enough energy from the singer, Sofia needs more practice, the voice wasn’t good in some parts. Without a 2nd semi final so only based on tonight I would send Angy personally even if Nebulossa are among my favs but tonight I wasn’t enough convinced.… Read more »

The stairs were the reason why Sofia’s vocals weren’t the best like Mae Muller last year and the male dancers for Zorra didn’t fit with the theme of female and old people’s empowerment.

The pre-recorded backing vocals covering the leading vocalist in most of these competition has become a really annoying pattern in this Eurovision season.

I don’t expect any of them to win on Saturday. Almacor / St Pedro will be the real deal

The last two years of Benidorm had soooo many good songs, what happened??? Everything was so aggressively bland here, I didn’t like or care about anything! Unless they bizarrely put all the good songs in the 2nd semi, I feel like I might just write this year off as Spain going, “never mind, we’re calling Chanel a fluke and we’re not even gonna bother trying anymore” ’cause that’s genuinely what this felt like. Also, lol, I don’t even know why they bother letting the public vote at all when the juries overthrow their opinions every single time. Just give the… Read more »

I feel like Chanel was a one time thing. Last year they should have sent Vicco because EeAa wasn’t exactly an inspiring song based on its results at Eurovision! I also think the new musical director Rayden is having problems behind the scenes!

This was not even a competition. Angy was a level above everyone else this semi. Bizarre how she didn’t win the jury..

I must say I felt extremely annoyed by 0 gender diversity in the hall, couldn’t spot a single girl.

Sofia had very bad stage performance, it was too much and it looks very cheap. Such a shame because it was my favorite (still is – the song). On other hand, Angy was amazing and I’d cry too if I was Mantra, imagine winning the televote and not even qualify to the final. That’s heart breaking no matter if I was a fan of the song or not.

how is Angy’s staging any better than Sofia’s? All Angy did was walk around the stage and hug two dancers… That’s all it takes to gag Spaniards? Sofia danced, sang and had a staging representing Spanish surrealist art and culture, something no other contestant has done yet she gets criticised and called ‘bad’. Sure Angy has a great voice it seems like people only root for her bc she is famous and not bc her proposition stands out.

That was a cool night with the usual Spanish Eurovision drama. Mantra won the televote but didn’t qualify. I felt sorry for the crying girl. Am I the only one to think Miss Caffeina’s lead singer looks a bit like Marco Mengoni??? Angy & Miss Caffeina were my favourites tonight. Good luck, Spain.

Not sure how Nebulossa would do at Eurovision nor how Zorra would translate into the stage.

The right 4 went thru. But it was a low bar. Most of the acts had vocal problems. You have to wander if they watched back their rehearsals on tape. Some of the outfits were cringe and the camera shots didn’t look right.

I hope she’ll be more confident on Saturday, that might be what costed her a bit more jury votes. While Sofia’s performance wasn’t the best the spirit and confidence were quite there.

Vicco got a better stylist since last year…I fully endorse
When the guest acts sounded 1000x better than the contestants–did they finally fix ‘the audio issues’ once the contestants were done singing

Nebulossa deserved to win! Very smart staging, and the audience singing along was just magical. I don’t understand the public vote but for once I won’t complain that the jury in Benidorm Fest basically decides everything!

It’s gonna be between st. Pedro and Angy, but since jury has in practise more power than televoting and demoscopic jury I guess he’ll win unless he flops in televoting.

Could Almacor or the Caliente song or another song from Thursday do well?
