It’s been a busy few days across Europe with five national finals giving us five new Eurovision 2024 songs. We saw a surprise act in Germany top both the jury and the televote; an Estonian six-piece relegate Ollie to second place (again); a queer woman of Ethiopian descent defeat Eurovision alum Basim in Denmark; and a Lithuanian favourite make good on all the hype. In Moldova, a Eurovision veteran won a tie-break decided by the jury vote. That’s led to an appeal from the public vote winner….
But does any of this change your rankings for Eurovision 2024? As ever we just have to ask: What’s your favourite Eurovision 2024 song so far?

🇩🇰 Denmark: Saba with “Sand”
Remarkably, Dansk Melodi Grand Prix marked the first time that Saba appeared on stage as a solo pop singer. She’s instead spent her career in musical theatre. But she took to it easy, working a beautiful light display as she served non-stop voice. Ahead of the competition she described her song to our Simon: “‘Sand’ is about losing control. I’m singing, ‘slipping through my hands’ …like sand. I like that picture. I think we all know that feeling in a way.”
🇪🇪 Estonia: 5miinust x puuluup with “(Nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (küll) midagi”
When Eurovision rolls around and viewers are drifting to sleep, Estonia will no doubt wake them up and shock them in the process. This peculiar mix of techno, folk and dance got Estonians moving. They had plenty of inspiration as the group delivered some viral choreography that will look even more impressive on the big Eurovision stage. It carries an anti-drug message with lyrics like, “We avoid pleasure substances, let the rich people do it early in the morning…the candies took away these sad-faced scumbags.”
🇩🇪 Germany: Isaak with “Always Running”
The bookies ignored him and fans did too. But when push came to shove, Isaak won Das Deutsche Finale 2024 in a very big way, coming first with both the people and the jurors, despite the near universal assumption that Ryk would take the crown. In January, Germany’s Eurovision broadcaster said the song “is an example of how the emotional depths and exhilarating highs of a song can take listeners on a unique musical journey.”
🇱🇹 Lithuania: Silvester Belt with “Luktelk”
This song has been on loop on Lithuanian radio stations for weeks and it’s currently sitting at the top of Lithuania’s Spotify charts. It has a mainstream sound underscored by the dark and subversive, making it ready for the club — and whatever happens after. Silvester has been drawn into the first half of the first semi-final. He told us in Vilnius that he isn’t afraid to open the semi-final. “It doesn’t scare us,” he said. And it shouldn’t: This song is stage-ready!
🇲🇩 Moldova: Natalia Barbu with “In the Middle”
She took Moldova to a Top 10 finish at Eurovision 2007. And now Natalia Barbu is hoping to do it again. Her song is a call for intimacy and understanding. And while the lyrics in the verses seem rather basic — “I want you to be happy…my beautiful angel, a work of art…I know your heart is filled with love” — the chorus has an enchanting quality. It honours Moldova’s musical history with a beautiful la la la la la.

Well, this just happened today. I was eating in a diner restaurant, and I heard James Newman’s 2020 Song My last breath play over the speakers. This is in America and it’s a song from a contest that was canceled!
I quite liked that song. I liked a lot of 2020’s songs actually, what I great ESC we missed!
Lithuania is my personal winner of 2020, but maybe it might get a second chance to broach top 5 this year.
Mine too! I don’t know, Silvester is one of my favourites… but it is not so much my cup of tea as On fire was. I still listen to it quite often, I love that song. Much more than Discoteque.
On fire will always be my all-time favorite Lithuanian eurovision entry, even though the contest was canceled, but Luktelk will probably come close. While I like on fire more than discoteque, it’s only by a narrow margin, and I’m still proud that the latter made it into the top 10 in 2021. I hope Silvester belt does make it into the top 10, Probably somewhere between fifth and 10th. Heck, even if he gets sixth place again, it will at the very least knockdown We are the winners from 2006.

LEAKED…
the Israeli song for ESC 2024 is…..“October Rain”. And the EBU gave their blessing to that song. It will be in English with 2 sentences in Hebrew.LEAKED… We Will Rave by Kaleen. And Kaleen was such a queen to not take down the demo version which is everywhere on social media. It will be a banger with lyrics in English.
You start to wonder how many of those songs were leaked on purpose as part of the PR. Belgium, Austria, and Netanyahu’s autocracy were all accidentally leaked in a matter of days. Who’s next in line to fake leakage?
Tbh I think it is really a leak for Belgium ? If I understood correctly it’s an error from belgian radio… and I’m not surprised anymore with this country (my country). It’s the kind of stupid thing that we fail.
At least the leak happened only one day before the release date. For Austria we’re talking about more than a whole month.
Some of these leaks are clearly done on purpose, some countries love to create useless and fake hype. Yeah of course a radio making an error lol we all believe in that.
Silvester! Lithuania
This sort of poll is a waste of time until all songs are released. I suppose next week people will desert Lithuania for Belgium. Like I said already people here are so fickle.
Ryk from Germany would have been my No 1, but… Isaak touched masses more, solid work, in my top 10. My Top 5: 1) Italy 2) Ireland 4) Denmark 5) France,… Ukraine dropping due to religious Touch though usually I do appreciate Alyona Alyona’s and Jerry Heil’s art.

My 5 favourite songs so far this year, in no particular order: Lithuania, Ukraine, Spain, Italy and France. Ireland is also up there because of its originality.
? But I must say I do not see a winner yet this year. Or even nothing that could be a winner. Last year this time we already had Cha Cha Cha, for example.
I like years when the winner isn’t obvious. Way more fun.
Still Gate.
Grant Thornton Baltic recalculated votes during the Superfinal of Eurovizija. Some 70K votes were cast in this phase. Silvester Belt remains the winner with 34,691 votes, followed by Shower (20,307 votes) and The Roop (15,046).
During both phases of the final night, 142,191 votes were cast:
No song. So far, the songs range from meh to absolutely excruciating. Even my beloved Italy has delivered badly this year. The public vote system in the semis is certainly having is heavy toll… Not the same contest anymore.

Found it. I’m gonna be honest, it’s good but I’m not a big fan of it for the moment. I wait to see the video clip.
It sounds solid. I’m not 100% sold yet but it’s definitely in my Top 10. The last minute can be staged in a way that would look epic, so I’m rather optimistic about its chances, although it doesn’t have that certain ‘winner’ vibe for me.
I’m gonna be a good little girl and wait until it’s officially released.
Honestly don’t get why people here call Lithuania a bop, like it’s fine but a bit all over the place and the chorus seems kinda tedious. Italy song has much more interesting instrumentals and stellar production

I voted for Lithuania and France. A few interesting songs this year, but there’s a huge wave of average boring ones.
Norway is still my number one!!! Closely followed by Italy.
I know this is an unpopular opinion but I am finding this to be the weakest year since I started following Eurovision in the noughties… the only song I like is Ukraine. The others aren’t all bad but they leave me cold.

This is my 33rd Eurovision season and I find it a good one. Not the best, but still very enjoyable with some really strong songs and almost no bad ones. The worst season is always the 2002 one for me and that’s gonna be very hard to beat that.
Still to early to tell, only got half the songs.
Same here. Only Ukraine deserves a win so far. However I hope the countries that didn’t reveal their entry yet will have something good to present.
If Israel will drop their song and it will be a winner song, I will scream!
The fact that Israel now 3rd in the odds without even a song.. says a lot.. the expectations are high.
It’s all about which countries get the attention and therefore people bet money. That’s simply how odds work. Israel is getting attention for many reasons obviously, and this might or might not change in the following weeks.
They choose a good singer, but the song tho… I waiting to know what it will be.. it is all about the song now, they will need a VERY strong song this year.. I wonder if it will be..
I think it’s more about politics and Israeli nationalists betting high. It won’t do that well.
I remember that people said that unicorn will be a NQ.. but in the end it finished 3rd with 5 times 12 point from the juries!
And this year Israel have a much better singer.. and maybe a much better song.. so anything can happen
Poland picked Luna in the meantime. It’s an OK song that for now goes somewhere in the middle of my list, but can be elevated live since Luna seems to be a good performer. In any case it’s a nice change of pace for Poland in Eurovision.
It is boring.. as for now this is the weakest year

I count how much I like a year from the number of songs I put in my playlist. I have 10/18 so far -might or might not add Luna- which makes a good year for me. It’s subjective after all, so just say you don’t like the songs!

I think it’s Spain for me for now followed by Lithuania. Poland just announced and it’s really good so this closes my top 3 for now:)

We’re halfway through and I’m pretty happy that most of my favorites won their respective NFs! 🙂
There’s a lot to unravel, but if anyone’s curious:
My top 5 (in no particular order): Italy, Norway, Lithuania, Estonia and Slovenia.
I also liked: Latvia, Ireland, Luxembourg, Czechia and France.
I feel indifferent towards: Denmark, Germany, Malta and Moldova.
I didn’t like: Spain, Ukraine, Albania and Finland.
All the songs are pretty good so far!! This is shaping up to be an amazing year at Eurovision and I know Sweden will do a great job with the cameras, stage and vocal mixing. France, Estonia, Norway, Ukraine and Ireland are my favourites so far!
Estonia and Lithuania have come to slay.
And it’s the first time since their debuts exactly 30 years ago that both Estonian and Lithuanian are sung at eurovision at the same time.
Don’t forget Latvia! The Baltics are best!
Latvia did miss a hat trick not sending a song in Latvian so we could have had all three Baltic languages at Eurovision for the first time, but you can’t have everything.

Lithuania
As of today, Lithuania is topping the poll. We’ll see if it lasts for long. People love it when an underdog country has a good song that could potentially do well.
Lithuania is also doing well in the odds which is good for an underdog country that doesn’t have traditionally many supporters betting money on them. I don’t pay attention to odds otherwise but some signs can be helpful to identify trends.
I just checked, Lithuania is 8th in the odds at the time of this post. Same position the roop were in 2021. Granted, I also don’t give a damn about odds period, but it’s always cool to see Lithuania in the top ten of the odds,
Latvia is my winner
Dons, Isaak, Slimane, Gåte, Nebulossa and Silvester are my favs.
Mustii song is kind of already out, it’s not bad but nothing outstanding either, it feels like a melfest song, 3 quarters of the song feels very long and samy and the last quarter is more interesting but is very very repetitive at the same time, he repeats at least 8 times in a row the same sentence…, and again all in english…I don’t know I didn’t click with it sorry but good luck to him.

As so often mentioned – lackluster field so far. A couple of songs I couldn’t be paid to listen to again. Only one I’ve liked enough to go to the trouble of downloading at this point – and a whole lot of middling to forgettable stuff.
Fully agree, nothing particularly exciting in this bunch so far.
ESTONIA I think after last year, many people tried to copy Finland with ‘the Kaarija Effect’. This is when we have a fun televoting friendly song that combines multiple genres. Out of all the songs so far that have tried to do this, I think Estonia does it the best.It’s not a direct copy of Kaarija and instead blends Electro folk with rap, creating an exciting new experiment that satisifies BOTH old and new listeners. My top 3 are (in no particular order) Lithuania, Norway & Italy.
The rest fall somewhat lower for me. A lot of my favourites crashed out in their respective national finals. I’m happy I got to hear them and make them a part of my Eurovision playlist though so I’m not sad 🙂
Where are the bops… The only songs I added so far are Sand and Mon Amour. Dancing with Demons, Damdiggida, Sinceramente or Tuta Gold would all have made this year more enjoyable so far.
At least Austria sounds promising, hoping for some female bops from Israel, Cyprus and Greece and for now hoping Sweden will send Maria Sur or M&M or Dotter have a good song

Meh. Stays way to flat for me. I need some good songs with good hooks, but also a range. Might be generic but like we had Tattoo, cha cha cha, unicorn, WTH is Edgar, Blood and Glitter, Queen of Kings. The only one this year coming close to what I am looking for is Sand, and Sinceramente would also be one. Or cyan kicks
Each one to their own taste. From those I’ve only added “Sinceramente” to my playlists, but it didn’t work for me live. I don’t like much any other of the songs you mentioned. And I’ve added many songs to my playlist this year so far.
Overall very weak year so far. We definitely haven’t heard the winner yet…. waiting to hear Australia, Greece, Israel, Georgia, Armenia, switcherland. I’ve heard azerbaijan and it’s not good. Heard austria and it’s ok not anything groundbreaking. I’ve heard cyprus and it’s good (but waiting for the staging to elevate it). I’ve heard the UK and it’s not my taste, I think people will be disappointed. The betting odds will have a difficult time predicting the winner this year…
We will have to rely on the Swedish broadcaster to host a very hight tech contest to help elevate all these average songs. The winner will come down to the live performance and staging. Don’t expect the type of run away winner like loreen or Duncan laurence. There will be 3-5 countries contenders for the win, creating more suspense compared to previous years. Also I’m expecting politics to have a huge impact on the results…
Duncan Laurence was not a runaway winner, he did not win either jury OR televote.
History remembers him as a huge success because of his streaming numbers etc. but that all came AFTER the contest, so maybe the same can happen here who knows.
Jonas, just to remind that though he didn’t win the televoting nor the jury, the odds we’re almost 50% that he would win the Eurovision.
I think they meant the “front runner”. Arcade was definitely the song to beat coming into the contest and even if you weren’t a fan of it you knew it was heading for the win
Exactly. Duncan didn’t win easily but I remember well that when his song came out the hype was real un the Eurovision world. I remember listening to it for the first time and saying: “This is it, this is the one”. In 2021 I had this feeling with Italy but at the same time I thought that it was gonna be tight with Malta. This year I haven’t had this feeling of a front runner yet and I’m not sure there will be one.
Am I the only one who think Angelina Mango is the Rosalia of Italy? Like Rosalia does with traditional latin music, Angelina succeeds to mix modern sounds with traditional italian style and the whole thing is very pro.
Whatever, at this point my top 5 is:
1) Ukraine
2) Italy
3) Lithuania
4) Denmark
5) Norway
Out of the new entries, Lithuania caught my attention the most.
Denmark and Germany are both solid songs in my opinion.
Estonia is fun and the folk elements are interesting. Certainly better than Finland.
Moldova has its moments but it’s a bit of a mess.
Lithuania, Italy and Norway are my Top 3. I also love Spain, Ukraine, Estonia, Slovenia and Ireland. There are a few more good and some average songs and the only song I absolutely struggle with is Finland.
It feels like a very competitive year for me with a lot of variety already, while there are still almost 20 songs left to be chosen or revealed. Whether the year is strong or not is also a matter of taste, by I’m populating my playlists very quickly this year if that’s a sign for me. 🙂
My top 3 are the same as yours. Lithuania, Italy & Norway (not in any particular order).
The rest (for me) are way behind these three. I totally understand other people will feel differently 🙂
Glad to hear! 🙂 I agree that these 3 are on a different level for me too. There’s something that drew me in immediately in all 3 setting an obsession that persists. Spain and Estonia are the only other ones that came close, mostly thanks to their live preformances. There’s a nice diversity this year, which I really like, so it’s normal to expect different opinions from fans.
Outta all of the songs chosen so far, the only one that I’m listening too on loop is the snippet of Dizzy by Olly Alexander. To me none of these songs are really doing it for me. I mean I have my Tops and all but, the UK entry is heads and shoulders above the rest. I know that I’m going to get a lot of have for that but….
