Portugal’s Eurovision 2024 national selection is kicking off this Saturday, and it’s a crowded race. Over the course of three weeks, 20 artists will compete in Festival Da Canção 2024. The competition will feature two rounds of semi-finals on February 24 and March 2, and will culminate in a grand final on March 9.
This year’s edition will be extra special, as 2024 marks the festival’s 60th anniversary. Throughout the three shows, RTP, Portugal’s national broadcaster, has invited a number of former participants and winners to celebrate the festival’s storied history by performing as interval acts. What’s more, this year marks the first time in the festival’s history where all the songs will be performed by their original composers. Talk about an epic singer-songwriter line-up!
We asked you to tell us who your favourite act was upon hearing all the songs last month. Now that the full results are in, let’s see what you all had to say.
Iolanda is a favourite to win Festival da Canção 2024
Out of the 20 acts that will be competing in the semi-finals, our readers are most excited to see Iolanda. Her fado-influenced track “Grito” picked up a respectable 25% of the total votes, or 360 votes.
With so many strong artists in the race, our readers showed their love across a range of entries. Coming in at second place is João Borsch with his electro-bop “Pelas Costuras”. The song garnered 15% of the overall votes, or 216 votes.
Not far behind was Filipa, who achieved third place in our poll. Her dark pop track “You Can’t Hide” earned 11.39% of the overall votes, or 164 votes.
Together, these top three entries dominated the poll, making up more than half of our readers’ total votes.

Anyway it is an interesting song but definitely not for Eurovision
Bem longue dacqui is favourite right now, it brings me to a happy place. I don’t have much faith on its qualification chances, but that’s not what we should be judging by.
Leave it to those typical eurofans to overrated the generic song in English from Filipa… This is Portugal, they’re never sending that, not when there are already plenty of much better options in this lineup, stop forcing your own tackiness onto Portugal, eurofans!

Only if we had no other good choices. This year will be Iolanda or Joao 100%, they are our best chances, great vocalists and performers. People will be sleeping on Portugal at ESC once again but we cooking.

I wish No Maka ft. Ana Maria will win. It’s the song with the best international appeal – a kind of continuation of Maro’s “Saudade, Saudade”, as others have also noted. Jan Bors’ excellent review of the song instantly notes the quality and international appeal of the song, which would make a good result in ESC.
My fav is definetely João Borsch. It would be refreshing to see Portugal sending him to Eurovision. Iolanda’s song is great, nice instrumentation but it has never really clicked with me, so I’m team Pelas Costuras! Good luck Portugal!

This is a news website. Some of the contributors proudly consider themselves journalists. So they are not supposed to only report what they “like”. Taste is definitely not a journalistic criterion. If they do so, then they are doing a crappy job.
It is what it is, they’ve always been biased. Since their taste of music is considerably different from mine, I don’t give any credit to their opinion. Anyway, I really love FdC ‘s vibe, and many of the songs shown there have quality ( regardless if I like the song or not). At least it is very different from most national selections where we hear and see the same style over and over and over…
João Borsch and Filipa have the best songs in my opinion and could be much better live.
After last year’s underwhelming result, I believe both juries and televoters will go for something melancholic, fado/folk-inspired or sad-indie kind of song, believing that that’s what works in Eurovision for Portugal. None of the songs in this year’s lineup is competitive enough, I’m afraid. João Borsch might be able to deliver an interesting/unusual live performance. Let’s see! Fingers crossed.
I’m still shocked that Mimicat managed to qualify. Her voice was not good. And she couldn’t sing.
