The Netherlands’ Eurovision 2024 singer Joost Klein is going from strength to strength. After smashing Duncan Laurence’s streaming record in the Netherlands and topping the Spotify Top 50 at home, the “Europapa” singer has proven that he can deliver when it matters most: LIVE!

On Thursday the Dutch star performed his song “Europapa” live for the first time at 013 Poppodium Tilburg. It’s the largest popular music venue in the south of the country.

If you’ve been on the social media site formerly known as Twitter or any Eurovision-related message board, then you already know the verdict: Joost absolutely killed it.

Joost Klein performs “Europapa” live for the first time at 013 in Tilburg

The venue stipulated “no phones” on the night, helping keep the performance a surprise for the masses outside of the venue. The black and white video starts with a voiceover that reminds the audience of that rule — while also promising great things to come.

“Welcome to the new world,” the narrator says. “What you are about to witness is beyond human comprehension. Please respect the no filming policy. During this show you will feel emotions. We only have this moment. Right here.”

Throughout the video the audience sings along, creating a powerful wall of sound that shows just how much Joost is loved in his home country.

Vocally he really nails it — his voice sounds strong, resonant and completely at ease. He’s been practicing his breathing technique and it really shows. At no point did he seem winded or struggling to keep up. In fact, the rap sounded vigorous and energetic. And he even managed to cram in lots of personality through cute vocal inflections and selected emphasis.

Occasionally the word “Euro” came out a bit froggy. But you get the sense it was deliberate and playful.

So how are you feeling about this? Do you think the audience outside of The Netherlands will respond in a similar way?

That is not live lmao. The video recording was from a live, but the audio itself is either a pre-recorded one or a live vocal that went through a massive post process edit. You can really tell that it’s not totally live because the audience’s screaming was drowned proportionally to the music and how static his voice sounded. Doesn’t change opinion that it’s a trashy song. It’s like they’re trying what Kaarija did but just went out with something that’s not even half as fun.

he also did a sec show where u were allowed to film, there are recordings of it on yt and it still sound like this, its not pre recorded. And also, that smth is new or a bit diffrent doesnt mean its a “kaarij rip off”, its not trying and it doesnt want to be one. Joost has always made music like this. The song also has alot of meaning too it, unlike your life

The forum is not for Eurovision fans anymore it’s for people who want to complain and hate each other’s song. It’s very toxic. I’m curious what other people think about the songs, but maybe it’s better not to know… There is too much disrespect, such as calling songs Trash out of jealousy, lower than low.

Honestly, I decided I was not on board with this track until I see the performance. For me, this is kinda Konstrakta-like song where you need performance to grab my attention, and now that I’ve seen this I totally get the hype. Potential winner if he manages to this in Malmö.

Eurovision is a tvshow, not a concert. Everytime an act try to make that concert feel they fail…voters dont reward that. Keep eye contact with camera, don’t shout out the host city name to engage the audience…it never pays off in votes.

Haha, David effing Hasselhoff? That’s an eighties spoof, and completely different from what Joost is trying to do. The genre he is paying tribute to is called happy hardcore, and some gabber in the breakdown as well. Typical Dutch 90s music. He also stuck a bit of Scooter in there, in the intro. I can perfectly understand that if you’re Croatian or whatever you think “what kind of cr.p is this” and that’s fine! Then just don’t listen to it.

So what? Stop name dropping as if it guarantees a good song. The best artists in the world release meh songs from time to time. We seen it in Eurovision as well (UK this year?). So having a big name behind a song doesn’t ever mean that the song is good.

That’s a good point. Olly Alexander is miles bigger name than Joost Klein, and his song is also “mid”.

I can understand your concern with the staging, but this particular performance isn’t meant for cameras but for the live audience (who are already existing fans), and he’s said they have something different prepared for May. What I think it does shown us is how much fun he can have with Europapa on stage, and how much energy he’ll bring.

Overall, I think the song is a lot of fun, with an undeniably memorable hook. It also has a message and a heart, and says something about Europe at a time when people do need a reminder to come together.

Churchbells and the world famous streetorgans( draaiorgels, ya know from the old fashioned dutch postcards with the tullips and windmills. Groeten uit Holland) are plaing Europapa. Nice comments in the media and alot of positive energy in our Lands. We are having fun already. That hasnt happened for a long time with a ESC song. Even with Duncan in 2019 there used to be lesser… Read more »

Im aware of the big attention worldwide Europapa and Joost is getting.
I have a strong feeling that the track is more populair with casual ESC viewers than with the traditional ESC fandom online.

#TeamJoostKlein are very smart in what they are doing.

He will qualify for sure. Could it win??
Maybe, he is sure a contender.

The pre-fun with the dutch ESC24 is very nice and postive.
So we will see.

Joost is special. I cannot remember the last time an artist had this much impact with so many people in the pre-contest period. This song is going to absolutely blow up in Malmo. He deserves it for creating a piece of magic.

He seemed out of breath singing his verses and I think the voice transition before the gabber part is not allowed during Eurovision as everything had to be sung live.

Still my fav tho. Good thing there’s plenty of time of improve.

Everything does not have to be sung live. Andrew Lambrou clearly cheated on the most difficult part of his song last year. Although I guess aaaaaaahhhhhhh is not considered an actual lyric which is why he got away with it.

No, it’s not necessary to sing everything live. That rule has been scrapped. And of course he can’t sing that part, it’s done with a sampler. His voice is basically used as an instrument.

None of the cha cha cha chants were live last year, nobody cared, nobody criticised… and they were even more important to that song than a few papapapapas. You’re right, Joost will be fine.

The lead vocals can not be pre-recorded. So if Käärijä had moved his lips during cha cha cha chants he would have been forced to do those with only the help of his one live backing singer. There can be backing singers behind the stage who are counted in the 6 people on the stage. Käärijä’s backing singer has told that there were 5 microphones in the room where she was working, so last year there was at least one solo artist who had 5 people singing the same parts. Btw Käärijä was the only artist last year whose backing… Read more »

I think a few of the jurors looking for ‘vocal capacity’ might have cared, Jonas. Quite possibly enough to make the difference between first place and second.

Will he end the song like this in May, without the part about his father?

No. He performed the song for the selection committee with the outro, in fact that’s what convinced them to choose him. But in this concert he did the longer outro version, later in the show.

Can’t imagine that happening. He cut down the outro to make the song exactly 3:00 mins. That’s deliberate. I love the full outro by the way, it makes the whole thing come together so much more. He also did multiple versions of Europapa at the 013, one with the full outro.

@Roy Moreno, why he should stop pushing this topic?
The israeli fandom is doing exactly the same thing.
They hijack whole treads for that matter. Pushing their entry.

Its very disturbing and taking away a huge part of having fun with ESC24.

I just looked at the translation of the lyrics into English. While it certainly has nice moments such as “Let’s come together”, “Fortunately, I don’t need a visa”, and telling a story about a road trip throughout Europe, it also has its dark shadows – meddling in politics. I assume it has something to do with more and more right-wing governments being elected in Europe (including the Netherlands!). It cannot be just another coincidence this year. As an asylum law specialist, I find this song politically toxic and dangerous. While I agree it’s great that the European Union is acting… Read more »

You cant judge others as being naive if they dont fit with your narrative.

Everybody speaks about not making ESC political when Israel sends in a heavily disputed entry.

You are doing it now.

I think you misinterpreted the message of the song. It’s about letting go of memories of his childhood and the passing of his parents. He always says he loved Eurovision growing up, because he used to watch it with his parents. The references are just a nod to those memories and his love for Europe and Eurovision. It’s a personal song, not a political one.

Yes, I know now, but people who watch it for the first time at Eurovision don’t know.
But hopefully they will just go with the flow of the fun, and then it has a good chance to win.

When I saw the video for the first time with all the EU flags I thought: what’s this? And then the fire at te end… is this a metaphore for the end of Europe? Europe into flames? Then I read the lyrics. He doesn’t care for paella or fish and chips. And then the image of the Dutch windmill into flames. My 2nd interpretation was: oh, he mocks the European Union. That it is a supranational power that burns all national traditions like paella and Dutch windmills. But that doesn’t seem his message. I read the about his parents and… Read more »

Indigene 1992 is literally about the Maastricht Treaty, the very foundation of the newly hatched EU. It won. Suspiciously, the U.K. jury gave it zero points.

I have tried to explain to you multiple times that there is no such thing as an “EU flag”. That is the flag of Europe, it represents the whole continent and the EU adopted it only 30 years after its introduction by the human rights organisation Council of Europe.

Why are you going on about the EU? Joost never mentions the EU in his song. There are 44 countries in Europe and only 27 of those are in the EU. One out of three European countries participating in Eurovision aren’t an EU member either. You’re taking it way too literally. The song is about Joost his father telling him to push boundaries and reach for the sky. He used the concept of nations borders, which are drawn and redrawn by men, as a metaphor.

It’s wild! That’s funny it reminds me the hard rock concerts when the audience started doing pogo.
I guess the audience will have a big part in his esc performance but this pogo in the esc audience not sure lol.
He seems to be good vocally, though this vid doesn’t really show a raw live performance but it’s more like a produced music video but whatever he will put the fire in May in Malmo for sure so good luck to him!
