Fifteen countries will compete. But only ten will advance to the grand final. Welcome to Semi-Final 1 of Eurovision 2024.

The first show in this year’s contest has some big hitters. It includes the bookies favourites to win the entire contest: Croatia’s Baby Lasagna and Ukraine’s alyona alyona & Jerry Heil. But beyond the odds table, it offers a wide mix of genres and styles — from the “ouija pop” of Ireland’s Bambie Thug to the moving balladry of Serbia’s Teya Dora to the WTF 90s euro-dance of Finland’s Windows95man.

The first semi will be their first reckoning — and in a televote only system.

Eurovision 2024: Semi-Final 1 line-up

Running Order

During the semi-final allocation draw, the fifteen countries were drawn into the first half or second half. Producers are now deciding the precise running order based on making the most interesting show (considering things like visual flow) and also practicality (the time and difficulty of moving acts and their props on and off the stage).

First half

🇭🇷 Croatia

🇨🇾 Cyprus

🇮🇪 Ireland

🇱🇹 Lithuania

🇵🇱 Poland

🇷🇸 Serbia

🇺🇦 Ukraine

Second half

🇦🇺 Australia

🇦🇿 Azerbaijan

🇫🇮 Finland

🇮🇸 Iceland

🇱🇺 Luxembourg

🇲🇩 Moldova

🇵🇹 Portugal

🇸🇮 Slovenia

Automatic qualifiers

These countries will perform their acts in full during the semi-final. However, because they are all automatic qualifiers, viewers will not be able to vote for them. Viewers in these countries will vote in this semi-final.

🇸🇪 Sweden

🇬🇧 United Kingdom

🇩🇪 Germany

Now we want to know what you think. We’ve got two polls below: one to name the winner, and one to name the 10 qualifiers

Who should win Semi-Final 1 of Eurovision 2024?

100% qualifiers: Ukraine – massive diaspora will help it qualify no matter what. Croatia – in all televote semifinal this is a sure qualifier Serbia – underrated by fans, but this is so obvious and beautifully staged that there is no doubt. Probable qualifiers: Finland – its crazy, its party… it will get a favourable spot in the running order for sure. Australia – I have a feeling this will be the last song in the running order because of its message. And there must be a didgeridoo on stage… points points points! For me, this is the easier Semi Final to call. Croatia and Ukraine will sail through to the final. Slovenia and Serbia are underrated at the moment and should get more votes on the night. Lithuania should be okay if the staging is powerful enough. Honestly I’d put Luxembourg in 6th, though no-one has ever voted for them in ESC before (because their last participation was pre-1997), so we just don’t know if anyone will notice Luxembourg in the semi. So Luxembourg is a complete unknown (but my 6th place). That leaves four. It’ll be whatever is fun on the… Read more »

Why is Luxembourg so underrated? It’s such a good and catchy song (and at least mostly in French!!) that deserves qualification way more than for example Poland or Cyprus (who sing completely in English!). Heck even Azerbaijan deserves to qualify more than Poland and Cyprus. Sry, I just can’t find anything original in Poland’s and Cyprus’s entries and DO NOT understand the love for those songs. They would have very low chances to qualify if it wasn’t for the weaker Semi-final. Also Ireland is divisive, but I can see them qualifying based on the 100% televote, it will be memorable… Read more »

How do you know that? Finland is not doing well in any polls. They are outside qualification in both the above poll (the “who should qualify” one) and the ‘My Eurovision’ app one – 11th place in both. I still expect that they will likely qualify in an only televoting format, but they would have no realistic chance if the format was 50/50 based on the current data.

The polls are completely irrelevant for Finland. I think they are irrelevant anyway, because every year we see fandom pushing in one direction and then during contest we get completely different things and someone “gets robbed”. I still remember how it was for Je me caise, I literally stopped following everything because it became so toxic, and I was so glad she failed miserably, because of her fans, not because of her or the song, the song for me was mid like it ended up, but it was hyped like best thing ever yas queen you slay we need it now… Read more »

I don’t understand the rationale that the polls are “irrelevant for Finland”, when Netherlands for example is doing much better with a similar song. I do agree that the fans often get some things completely wrong – I had the same exact experience that you had with Destiny last year with Blanca Paloma. And of course there is also the opposite phenomenon, with songs such as “Trenuletul” for example that got completely disregarded from the fans to end up placing very high at televoting. Where I disagree with you (and others) on “No Rules” is the entertainment factor – I… Read more »

I don’t know if this SF is weaker, but in the second SF all possibilities are in circulation. Here I see 5 countries that are sure finalists (Ukraine, Croatia, Finland, Lithuania and Serbia) and anything can happen for the remaining 5 places.
Unfortunately I see Iceland and Australia as NQ but the remaining 8 are all in play.
*For Finland and Serbia, I don’t think they can be in the top 5 of this SF, but I certainly don’t see them below the top 10 to pass

I would add Moldova to NQ as well, If they dont do the usual Moldofication to their staging. It’s not particulary loved by the fandom, and I doubt the casual viewers will be fond of the song as well. All the other ones are borderline, except for the ones you mentioned as sure finalists, but I would like to think Slovenia has also pretty good chances to qualify.

Moldova almost always gets through. Remember Doredos at this stage? Sitting at the bottom as well, hated by fandom, and boom, they crush the televote with amazing staging.

Pons

Well they usually do well when they have an uptempo song, like in the case of Doredos. But when they sent for example Anna Odobescu with Stay or Natalia Gordienko with Prison they didn’t qualify and most likely wouldn’t have qualified with Prison. Unfortunately people associate Moldova with fun, upbeat and ethnic songs so when they send a ballad, it will likely not qualify.

For me, Moldova is my q, but even when I look at everything, I still think they have some possibility for q.
I can personally see what Natalia wanted to do with the performance, but the Moldovan selection looked very poor, both the scene and the camera work, and in Sweden it will all be different.
I don’t want to compare her with DoRedos, because Kirkov was behind them, but I don’t out Natalia.. I can even see her above Serbia and Finland, but she can certainly be below

I have 10 obvious qualifiers which usually means something shocking will happen 🙂 NQs for me are Poland, Cyprus, Portugal, Iceland, Australia. Poland has a weak overproduced song and her live vocals don’t sound good. Unless she finds her mojo and have an amazing staging (and I see something literate from this which will probably kill the chances even more), she is out. Poland even with amazing performers don’t get great results, remember Ochman and Michal Szpak who would both easily win if they represented Sweden for example. Cyprus has a generic overproduced girl bop, that lost the race in… Read more »

My personnal qualifiers: Ukraine, Lithuania, Portugal, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Ireland, Cyprus and the 2 spots left are contested by Poland, Luxembourg and Azerbaijan.  My predictions: Ukraine, Lithuania, Croatia, Serbia, Finland and Cyprus are pretty sure qualifiers. Slovenia and Portugal should qualify too as they will sing during the second half that is full of mediocre songs (not bad but forgetable). I’d love to say that Ireland and Poland will qualify too but it’s impossible that all 7 songs from the first half will go through. Maybe Ireland as it is very remarkable but I’m not even sure 😐 It gives… Read more »

Lithuania and Ireland are the ones I’ll be supporting the most in this semi. There are some other good songs s as well, but I’m obsessed with these two.

I hope that presence of English and Australian televoters in this semi will help Bambie to qualify *fingers crossed*

What about Scottish, Welsh & Northern Irish Televoters? Did you mean British?

Favorites: Croatia and Lithuania

Other songs I play a lot: Australia, Azerbaijan, Cyprus, Finland, Luxembourg, Poland, Slovenia and Ukraine.

That would be 10 songs.

I don’t dislike Portugal, Serbia and Iceland either. I just don’t listen to those songs as much as the others.

As for Moldova and Ireland. I hardly listen to those two songs.

These are my preferences but I think the 10 qualifiers will be different lol.

By now we haven’t seen the live performances of the entries, yet that might be crucial and change a lot. Poland was in my TOP 5 until I’ve seen her performing live. Maybe it were bad vocals due to the sound mixture at the event.

Yes, I saw that clip too. Never judge from a video taken from a mobile phone. That’s a rule.

I feel like the semis this year are more balanced in terms of quality.

My SF1 qualifiers are:
– Serbia
– Croatia
– Ukraine
– Portugal
– Slovenia
– Luxembourg
– Lithuania
– Ireland

My last two places are uncertain. Poland, Australia, Finland, and Azerbaijan are all possibilities.
Cyprus, Moldova, Iceland to go home. I feel sorry to say this, because Natalia and Hera are both ESC royalty!

Lithuania gave an opening for the Semi-final in 2021. Give it a break. Plot twist, I see Croatia opening this semi.

I can totally see Cyprus opening this semi, although Lithuania wouldn’t be a bad opener and wouldn’t harm their qualification chances. It will likely affect their ranking though (similar to Norway last year) and this might mean a worse place in the final running order especially if they draw 1st half. Croatia will probably get to perform somewhere between 5th and 7th.

Maybe these polls could include the name of the song along with the country. I don’t always remember which country has which song but a title brings the song immediately to mind.

I agree about Ireland, this is not to qualify despite the support from some eurofans.
