It’s been ten years since Conchita Wurst stormed the vote at Eurovision 2014 in Denmark. Flash forward a decade and now he’s going to #JoinUs at the London Eurovision Party for a very special 2024 performance.
Austria’s number one bearded drag queen is guaranteed to bring goosebump-inducing vocals and a heartwarming story as he rises like a phoenix for us on stage in the British capital.
Who is Conchita?
The Austrian drag superstar, real name Thomas Neuwirth, rose to fame as under the drag moniker Conchita Wurst.
Born in Gmunden, Austria, Neuwirth first pursued a music career through a reality TV show Starmania. A brief stint as part of a boyband ‘Jetzt Anders’, Neuwirth turned his head to Eurovision. It was his second attempt in Austria’s national selection that brought him to the contest.
Conchita won the Eurovision Song Contest with “Rise Like a Phoenix” in Copenhagen, 2014 with a total of 290 points. Countries across Europe gave points to Austria, so for many it was a sign of a significant shift in queer acceptance. Graham Norton later remarked “there were Eastern European countries voting for Conchita, and you realised that actually horrible governments don’t reflect on a horrible population. People are good and it’s a shame that legislators don’t keep up with that.”
Neuwirth comes to us hot off the heels of helping choose Germany’s entrant for this year as part of ‘Ich will zum ESC’.
London Eurovision Party 2024
The London Eurovision Party is the biggest annual Eurovision event in the United Kingdom.
The party will see a majority of artists from the year of 2024, but joining them will be some Eurovision alumnis too. This year the party celebrates its 15th edition at Here at Outernet in the UK capital.
Here at Outernet is a large concert venue right in the beating heart of London. It is known for its artistic styling and modern spaces. The London Eurovision Party will provide an excellent chance for a British audience to see their favourite acts before the contest itself.
I’m more disappointed with Conchita going because I’m not! Why do my favourite entries go but I don’t?
I don’t get what she really did for Germany this year? “Nothing!” is the real answer. She didn’t cast any good talents for the Wildcard preshow.
Feels like it was just a trick to promote herself and have a reason to be on german TV shows again.
After “Rise Like A Phoenix” 10 years aho- nothing highly valuable has come in regard to music.
Rise Like A Phoenix would be an envied highlight of most careers.
Looking forward to seeing another stunning performance from Conchita.
One hit wonder. Not anything more for a whole decade ….!
Well, apart from the 24 singles, three albums, endless guest apoearances and various tours.
