They’ve been a fixture of the Top 5 of the betting odds ever since the release of their Eurovision 2024 song “The Code.”

And, following a stellar performance at the Eurovision PrePartyES in Madrid on Saturday, Switzerland’s Nemo has finally climbed to the very top, becoming the favourite to win the Eurovision Song Contest.

Eurovision 2024 odds: Switzerland the favourite to win

Two weeks ago, on March 14, the Swiss star Nemo had odds as low as 15/2, which placed them behind Croatia’s Baby Lasagna, Ukraine’s alyona alyona & Jerry Heil and Italy’s Angelina Mango.

But following a dynamite performance in Spain, the non-binary icon has seen their odds slashed to 7/2, jumping Croatia, Italy and Ukraine in the process.

Nemo’s performance in Madrid was among the most talked-about of the evening. Many were surprised, even startled, that sweet-faced Nemo was able to match the in-your-face, full-throttle energy of the studio cut.

“The Code” snakes through rap, drum ‘n bass and opera. It’s fun and unconventional — but it carries an important message about self-acceptance and showcases the perseverance many people need to live openly and freely.

For Nemo, cracking the titular code reflects the journey of learning they were neither male nor female. As they sing: “I, I went to hell and back/ to find myself on track/ I broke the code/ Oh, Oh, Oh…”

Using binary code as an analogy for black and white, male and female, Nemo unlocks their truth: “Somewhere between the 0’s and 1’s/ that’s where I found my kingdom come/ my heart beats like a drum.”

The rest of the Top 10 remains largely in tact. Croatia, Italy, and Ukraine all performed in Madrid, and each of them have maintained a spot in the Top 4. The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Greece, Sweden and Austria round out the Top 10.

What do you make of all this? Can Switzerland take it all? Let us know in the comments box below.

Did you know? The idea for the “Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson Européenne” came in 1955 from Marcel Bezençon, then Director General of the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SRG) and Chairman of the Program Commission of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). So it would be nice if the contest were to be held in its “birthplace” again after exactly 70 years.

Agree. It is sad people now days do not appreciate music. They only vote for the weird, different or “funny”. A singer with amazing vocals won’t be voted but dude without pants or boy in grand-mama’s gown gets the votes. EBU should change the name of this competition to Eurovision Circus Contest.

It’s far from being trash. A bit shouty and hysterical at the beginning, yes, but it picks up quite nicely in the second half and leaves quite a good impression in the end (at least the studio version). After hearing all the songs for the first time, studio versions only, and ignoring the odds completely, I’d say this would land somewhere in top 10 – all things taken into consideration. With equal competition it would’ve been different. As to the others, Belgium (by far) and Norway impressed me the most, Slovenia and Italy were also nice. Malta is the most… Read more »

Ok, I have to say this. It has been a loooong time I haven’t seen so many non-sensical comments. I see that everybody supporting Nemo has been downvoted. That means one of the two (or both). Eurovision fans have completely lost their sense of a good song and just want a quick fix of a joke, like drug addicts. Or (and) fans are turning LBTQI-phobic and embracing that stupid narrative of the so-called “gender ideology”. Either way, be warned: You are not welcomed!

He’s a good singer and I thought his live performance was quite strong, but the song to me is just too messy to be a winner. I do like certain parts of the song, but some parts also feel like they don’t really belong there.
Then again, I don’t see either Croatia or Italy win as well, so it’s definitely going to be an interesting outcome this year.

I really don’t know! I feel like this year the winner might be somewhat of an outsider. Croatia or the Netherlands would make sense, if I wasn’t sure the juries don’t want them to win. Maybe Greece or Belgium if they get the staging right? I don’t think the juries and the televoters will agree on the winner, so it feels like anything can happen this year, very exciting 🙂

As a gay man, you are in a position to understand what being gay means. You are born that way, it was not a choice or result of cultural grooming. You just are what you are and that’s that. Some heteros still fail to get that, because it’s beyond their familiar comfort zone.

I think it’s a shame if WE then turn around and do the same to another group. We can’t just draw the line where suits us, and refuse to consider anything past it.

I actually find the concept of non-binary to be quite gender conforming and that’s my only issue with it. No issue with Nemo whatsoever, may people be whatever they want to be and express however they want. I just don’t like the idea that a woman with traits that are traditionally seen as ‘masculine’ or a man with qualities that are traditionally seen as ‘feminine’ need to identify as ‘non-binary’. I would say that one of the good things of progress is accepting that both women and men are no longer trapped in gender stereotypes we were living before and… Read more »

Sorry to dissapoint you, but it really is extremely difficult to understand. I can understand not feeling comfortable with your gender assigned by birth (or finding it unbearable) or hating gender norms and not feeling like you fit in any of the stereotypes but I can’t understand feeling neither like a woman or a man (same way that I can’t understand not feeling like a human). Having a sex and a gender is a reality of human experience and anything that goes beyond it is hard to understand simply because it is not part of it.

It can be hard to understand. I appreciate that, and get your point. A few years ago, I was part of a small awareness campaign on a university campus. We handed out pronoun pin badges that people could wear to show support. A surprisingly big number of well-intentioned students went for “they/them” pins, and based on what they said we could see they really did not get it. Just because a boy paints his nails, or a girl had short hair, that does not make them NB. It’s a lot deeper and more complex than that. Education and understanding on… Read more »

Can you explain how is it then? You are mentioning it’s much more deep and complex and I would really like to understand. I was called non-binary once and I found it completely misplaced, because when it was elaborated it was merely a suggestion that I can’t be a woman if I’m androgynous and displaying ‘masculine’ traits – my choice of profession and assertiveness. I completely understand anyone who is indetifying as transgender but I just can’t understand the motivation behind calling yourself non-binary. I find the term quite unsettling too, since it strongly implies other people are divided to… Read more »

Hm, to be honest, I’m not really sure if I am up to the big task of explaining it. I can say that it is nobody else’s job to assign you a gender. You are a woman, and perfectly comfortable with that label despite any “masculine” traits you may have. A non binary person weight not be. The label does not sit right with them, they feel restrained. That the term does not fully describe them. Exactly, being a male or a female shouldn’t come with a label and most of us feel restrained by such constructs. Other people’s expectations of us should not define who we are any more than our gender should define or trap us. You seem to think non-binary is a state of being people are forced into? There are still very masculine butch lesbian women who don’t align with being non-binary. Being non-binary doesn’t mean androgyny or a mix of both masculinity and femininity because it is not a rigid third gender, everyones expression of non-binaryness is different because it’s an umbrella term for several different things instead of one rigid binary third gender that you seem to treat it as.

I disgust the participation of Eden representing a country commiting Warcrimes, a huge onslaught and the biggest Humanitarian Crisis in our recent time.

The biggest mistake by the EBU letting them participate at ESC24!!

But we cant say this openly isnt it?? As you pumpkins might feel offended……………..??

Its disgust. i completely agree with you Iv***

There wasn’t any ‘tolerance’in voting for Bashar competing in the Icelandic national Finals.

“It is you having troubles and not accepting people who are different and feel differently”- end of quote.

This edition is toxic from the start already unfortunately.
So don’t make false accusations to others not playing in your field.

It is an extremely weak year. But that is not the reason. The reason is that the average quality of the songs is extremely low. BTW Eurovision has always been queer. The difference is that today it’s more visible.

There are still a lot of things that can happen. By now it was only the eurovision bubble watching the entries.
But if the EBU wants to win someone they can do that by using farming techniques, Sound, camera, mixture…

I think he might lose about 100 points because of the dress. He is a unique artist, this is what viewers connect to. Yet, this is still a contest and he’s there to compete. The dress only distracts from the lyrics, even the vocals and song. It’s great he has his own agenda and he is who is, but maybe just a different outfit.

I think you’re right that a different outfit, even a different dress, would help. This particular dress is a bit ugly and doesn’t fit well. It’s not exactly the taste level of Conchita, who looked immaculate in 2014 and always does.

I was so happy to see Nemo rise to the first place in the odds, it doesn’t necessarily guarantee a victory, but quite often, the odds are right. I loved “The Code” from the very first listen, it’s my absolute favourite, a masterpiece in my personal opinion. PS. I don’t really care if Nemo is non-binary, I just love the song, it’s neither a deterrent nor an incentive, but some people can’t see past Nemo being non-binary.

Malta 2021.
Favorite in the odds until the first rehearsals where France took the lead, before Italy eventually became the ultimate favorite.
I won’t take any odds for granted until – at least – the rehearsals.
The odds are usually wrong until this point, with a few exceptions (Netherlands 2019, Ukraine 2022 or Sweden 2023).
Nemo might win, or lose.
I think that Croatia, Ukraine, Belgium, or even France and Israel are still very strong contenders.

It was abot time that the odds change as genuinely did not think Croatia stands a chance with juries. If you look at the team Nemo is working with, from songwriters to choreography, you can see they’re pulling all the stops to win this. And they can. The song is not to my personal taste in honesty, overproduced and trying too hard. Still prefer the story behind Baby Lasagna and their song, friend nominating him for the contest, being on a spare list and only in the country final as somebody else pulled out. Seems like a genuine and down… Read more »

Hm.. Ok, I completely respect singer’s talent, don’t get me wrong. The talent is obvious but the song… Personally, I don’t get it. I’m very much aware what is about and I do respect that, but sonically is one big mess. Melody is all over the place…it feels forced and comes across just weird for the sake of being weird. :/ And yes…there is that dress which I find very distracting and unnecessary. I’m curious how this will appeal to the general Eurovision audience in May. Let’s remember this is only a small Eurovision bubble compared to everything else around… Read more »

I also think it might be a winner (surely he will be high with juries) and probably TOP 5 in public which might give him a victory overall. I am just afraid that he changes his dress:) this one looks like pijaka:) Croatia is definitely overrated, it might be a public dinner but judges won’t allow Lasagna to win the thing. Especially that we have many joke entries this year so I think viewers votes split between many acts. I hope the quality wins over show (looping into Italy, Ukraine or maybe even Greece)
