TALI – “Fighter” (Luxembourg Eurovision 2024)

Review: TALI – “Fighter”

Pablo: Luxembourg’s back and with such a banger of a song! “Fighter” is a solid piece of flowery French pop that sounds bound to inundate French radio and cross boundaries to other countries’ streaming services at the same time. The way the chorus is structured is pretty unique and, while it may have had a nicer impact in a full French version, the language mix is well integrated and pretty fun. I am hopeful that this familiarity factor and worldly appeal is the key that’ll take them to the final.

Score: 8

Georgia: Luxembourg’s return to the competition after years of absence brings with it a light, summery pop song with French and English lyrics. While it’s undoubtedly radio-friendly, it faces a challenge standing out from the rest of the dance songs in this year’s Eurovision lineup. Despite its catchy nature, it may struggle to leave a lasting impression compared to other more distinctive entries in the competition.

Score: 4

Sebastian: Another song, another theme of resilience and rising up. What is very commendable is the almost flawless blending of French and English with a beautiful blending of French and Middle Eastern sounds, which is perfect for the Israeli-born Tali. The vocals are breathy and alluring, and the production is eargasmic. The theme is, however, unfortunately generic, and Tali does need to sell the performance more in her physicality. With a lot of hard work and perseverance, we can see Luxembourg’s return to the contest after 30 years well and truly worth it.

Score: 6.5

Deban: Although “Fighter” is Eurovision by numbers, it is counted with sharp accuracy. Seamlessly transitioning between French and English, structure and improvisation, Tali makes every second of her three-minute latex-clad appearance count. This slice of pop perfection should comfortably advance to the Eurovision Grand Final and help cement the reason for Luxembourg’s highly anticipated return.

Score: 8

The girly bop strikes again with Wiwibloggs. Anything shiny really.

It’s sad that Luxembourg decided to come back with this lame song. Hopefully next year, they’ll bring something strong.

I am so happy Luxembourg returned and so sad that the great Luxembourgish legacy is so badly represented with this wanna-be Fuego meets Chanel. Kudos only for not forgetting to sing in French… 4/10

Always nice to have a country return to the contest, and especially nice when its one with the historical success that Luxembourg has had. There were definitely challenges this year when it came to their national final, as their approach was seemed short-sighted and it ended up with a particularly poor lineup of songs. There was a clear stand-out song with the potential to do really well with Eurovision juries but, they chose “Fighter” instead. With the involvement of Dardust, you expect some top-level production. It’s there somewhat. While the percussion does have a nice, professional sound to it (the… Read more »

I see “Fighter” as the musical equivalent of the taste of Marmite. (Some people love the taste, while other people can’t stand it.) So let’s look at the grand return of Luxembourg and try to understand why I think this song divides opinion on taste. This song has a Dembow beat throughout. (So that’s from Jamaica or Panama or Latin America, depending on who you ask.) Because this beat is so specific, it creates a false impression that the tempo is relaxed and is at around 90-94 BPM. But if the time signature is 4/4 (not common time), then actually… Read more »

It’s listenable but I forget about it a lot. I think this would be a qualifier with juries but televote only I’m not 100% sure how many people’s #1 this is to vote for it.

No more Jews in Eurovision please. The Israeli fans are toxic fanatics. Mae Muller destroyed the UK’s chances last year and then attacked indigenous British people. And not Tali has assaulted us with this monstrosity.

Great to see Luxembourg back but this song isn’t the best. It’s fine but maybe a bit generic. It’s a borderline qualifier for me.

I like it, will be interesting to see if Luxembourg can qualify considering that smaller nations seem to struggle a bit with the fully televote semis

Agree with Deban, it’s so neat the way she switches from French to England and back. Also I love the pause in the first part of the chorus. Both points noted and remembered from the first listen.

17th place – Luxembourg I love this song! For some reason it’s so catchy to me and I love listening to it! Tali’s voice is pleasant and the song overall is nice. However I do think there is many things that need improvement. First of all, the staging and the outfits. The staging they presented in Luxembourg wasn’t that impressive and was too dark in my opinion. The outfits were a bit too basic as well. The choreo was nice but I think Tali should move more. She’s way too static for a song that has a good rhythm. If… Read more »

This straddles the line between dance-pop and something more singer-songwriterly, except that Tali is not a songwriter here, so it comes off as more anonymous than it should. But the lyrics are pretty good and the tempo is jaunty. It kind of felt like Luxembourg was on training wheels this year, but they brought in some ringers like Dardust, and ended up with a return that I think is more than respectable. I’ve got it in 22nd place (and I like all the songs that I have above this line).

The song is solid and catchy, but the production sounds very cheap, almost like a ringtone. Still it’s a better full package than half of this year’s entries and I hope Luxembourg does decently for the sake of their future participations.

Yeah. I like the pace of the lyrics, and the French part of the chorus… But agree about the music. It needs deeper tones, electrohorn ‘squawks’ etc. as the instrument panel is indeed very ‘ring tone’; hollow sounding.

Good term BTW… I couldn’t think of a term to describe a lot of this year’s music tracks… ‘Ringtone’/hollow/thin is where I’m at. Sweden, for example, has my favourite music track (deep and long notes), but one of my least favourite vocals (too nasal/light). They don’t meld.

I was a bit underwhelmed when the Luxembourgish NF line-up was revealed. I still think there were better options, though. Krick would have bring a better result for Luxembourg even though both two would have struggled to qualify but “Drowning in the Rain” reminds me a little bit of “Alika’s “Bridges”. Choosing a generic danceable and uptempo song just to appeal the televote and the die-hard, diva-lover fans isn’t going to work. As much as I want Luxembourg in the final they better go for something more groundbreaking next year. They have very good artistss and bands. Check the band… Read more »

I get why some people like this, but I personally find it meh. I turned off the revamp because it just didn’t do it. Maybe too mainstream and generic for me, doesn’t leave me excited.

Unfortunately, it’s a very unimpressive comeback. The song is very mediocre and sounds totally anonymous, with no identity. So did most if not all of their NF. They picked one of their two best shots although now, I’d definitely prefer “Drowning in the rain” because it had at least a bit more flavor. I either want something really Luxemburgisch like their interval, or some bought French evergreen like in their golden days. This ain’t it, not even with Dardust.

36) Luxembourg – Great to see Luxembourg back, however this song for me is one of the weakest songs this year. Don’t get me wrong, I like the French parts and the choreography, but aside from that it just does not excite me in the slightest. I had a bit of hope when the news of a revamp broke, but “revamp” was a bit of an overstatement, instead being a slight tweak. 3.5/10

This was definitely a “blink and you might miss it” type of revamp. I definitely was expecting a lot more.

LUXEMBOURG – Five times champion and one of the founders is back, and I am happy to write my first Luxembourgish review ever. Luckily, it’s a positive one. Putting aside that Krick should have won, Fighter is a bop! Among several girlbops this year, this and Italy (coincidentally produced by the same guy) are the most creative ones. Fighter combines the elements of the classical chanson with those of a mainstream pop, and it flows surprisingly well. There are many twists and turns in the composition, pauses and drops, with several little hooks. The usage of both French and English… Read more »

I really enjoyed the Luxembourgish national final back in February. And Tali deserved to win. Her song and performance were the best among all the entries.

2 months on, I still find the song intriguing. It’s no masterpiece, but it serves its purpose; it’s dance and energetic, and it has those little French touches I love.

Perhaps Tali is a bit inexperienced, but her performance was good enough. I feel she will do the same on the ESC stage and qualify.

Good luck Lëtzebuerg!

Nice mix of keys and genres – it’s chanson-y, it’s playful, it’s suspensful and it’s bilingual. It’s definitely not easy to sing and dance and do a tv show and represent your country for the first time in Eurovision in 30 years all at the same time. All the best to Tali and her team in Malmø <3 I hope Luxembourg will qualify.

Otherwise kudos to Tali, she was *dignity personified* on stage at the London “party”, a true artist throughout <3

That can be said for several songs this year. I only need one hand to count the vocalists that could legitimately be called ‘powerhouses’. But then, there are only a couple of songs that necessitate actual emotion.

It’s really fun to see Luxembourg back in the contest after little more than thirty years, but this song just doesn’t do much for me. It’s pretty difficult to sing live so TALI does that pretty well, but her choreography being as stiff as it is is an absolute hindrance to the entry’s chances. This song needs to compete with other girlbops this year and so far it’s a serious uphill battle. I like that it mixes English and French, the revamp ‘cleaned’ the song’s messy backing track up quite nicely, but all in all it’s still relatively forgettable. It’s… Read more »

It feels like a demo. I expected something between “Hoida Mut” and “Ça M’ennuie Pas” before I listened to it. So this overall does not seem like a finished song.

35TH PLACE: LUXEMBOURG: I am happy to have Luxembourg back at the contest by I am hugely disappointed by their song and is among my least favourites of the year. ‘Fighter’ is a really generic girl bop and I never liked the aesthetic of either the music video or the live performance. It is certainly one of the weakest Dardust works I have heard. If it wasn’t for the fact that Luxembourg is a returning country this year, I would believe this would be a candidate for an NQ.

Agreed that this sounds very much like a “phoned-in” effort from Dardust. It’s just not interesting to listen to and that’s so unlike him.

36. Luxembourg – TALI – Fighter – 4/10 – the vocal seems to be fighting the instrumental in this track, I find the two quite disconnected, especially in the verses. The chorus is then quite uninspiring and over-familiar and the vocal run is a little grating. It’s not terrible but it is a track that I would never choose to listen to in my own time. I didn’t find the live presentation very appealing either. To be clear, I don’t hate the song even if it is very nearly at the bottom of my list.

Similar thoughts in that I don’t hate it, but would never seek it out to listen. It’s a fine placefiller as a Eurovision semi finalist, but the worry is, as a returning country, it’s probably going to take a place in the grand final away from a much more deserving song.
