The Eurovision Reference Group is an executive committee that controls the running of the Eurovision Song Contest, writing the rules and making decisions about the format. Formed of the Eurovision Executive Supervisor, the Heads of Delegations of three countries, and Executive Producers of previous contests, it was this group that permitted Israel’s inclusion in Eurovision 2024 with “Hurricane,” after requesting multiple revamps to remove politically-charged lyrics from the song. But now, a former member of the Reference Group has spoken up and said this was the wrong decision.

Miša Molk is a producer and television personality who has worked extensively within the Slovenian Eurovision delegation. She was also a member of the Eurovision Reference Group from 2001-2009.

Appearing on TV programme Odmevi, Molk was asked by host Igor Bergant whether we are witnessing the beginning of the end of Eurovision as we know it:

“I think we’re close. Although deceiving you with the words of bread and games is deceptive and very misleading. It is also humiliating to those who have no bread, who have no roof over their heads, who have no water, who have no life. For this reason, I think that it can no longer stand in this form and that this glorification of war crimes through music is shameful.”

Molk has previously called out the “feigned apoliticalness” of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which organises the contest. Adding to this in the interview, she said the bans on flags and Palestinian symbols didn’t address the root cause of the issue, which should have been solved by not allowing Israel to participate at Eurovision this year.

“There were very many bans, yet the most necessary ones were not in place: The ones you might expect, i.e. that Israel would not participate or that the event itself would be cancelled this year. So there were many possibilities. The EBU has tried very hard to prevent any conflicts, oppositions, but…

[interrupted by Bergant: “Didn’t that actually cause more of them?”]

“Yes, some anger and internal rebellion […] Seeing the hatred and suffering on Earth. With this, we descended into the dark side of life, which can also be real, but the Earth has escaped us in the meantime.”

To conclude, Molk was questioned about the future of Eurovision after the controversial events of the 2024 edition, and whether Slovenia should be part of it.

The former Reference Group member gave a warning that the desire to compete and put on a big show means many will be too quick to forget the despair that surrounded this year’s contest. Since the Israel-Gaza conflict could likely still be in a similar position come May 2025, Molk noted that next year’s event would see a return to the same mistakes if action isn’t taken on the matter.

“Of course, the leaders and those responsible here will decide on Slovenian participation. […] We forget very quickly, we forget too quickly, we love to compete, we love to guess, and we love the spectacle. And since the world isn’t going to change much until next year, and I wish it would, we’re probably going to get back into the contest of bread and games.”

What do you make of Miša Molk’s comments about Israel’s participation at Eurovision 2024? Let us know in the comments below.

If it were a normal fair competition, only music would count, not politics. Why wouldn’t Israel take part? The jury’s open boycott of Israel and Ukraine and great favoritism towards Metler violate the Competition rule. The result should be canceled because there were irregularities and violation of the regulations

Israeli outlet Ynet confirms Eden Golan’s televote advertising campaign was organised by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Yep! It’s confirmed! Astroturfing at its best. From the article: “The support Golan received from the European audience was preceded by a campaign by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the government publicity office for Eurovision fans, in which the Israeli representative addressed them in French, Italian, Spanish, German, Czech, Latvian, Estonian, Albanian, Georgian and English – and asked them to vote for her.”  “The videos taken by Golan were uploaded to a dedicated YouTube channel and received more than 14 million views. The campaign appealed to audiences selected based on a careful analysis of the voting patterns of countries… Read more »

When other countries did it they were heavily criticized. When you read comments such as, “I don’t even know what ESC is but I will answer the call to vote for Israel.” “I’ve never watched the ESC before but I will vote for Israel.” It all just makes you wonder. Besides Israel never hides the fact that its Parliament each year votes for a budget.running into millions to pay social influencers, propagandists etc to put forward Israeli interests and for silencing opposition. So many wouldn’t put it past it that people were actually paid to vote.

I don’t think that Israels participation was the biggest problem. No the biggest problem was, that there was more show than music. It was disgusting to watch Spain and their pathetic performance with 2 fat men dancing half naked. Not to forget UK. That was really shameful to watch. I am happy they got a very deserved 0 points from the public. Next year I hope we will see a Eurovision for the whole family and with focus on music and singing.

Wise words, the EBU made the wrong call this year. If the contest is truly apolitical than allow Russia and Belarus to come back next year. Belarus did the exact same thing Israel did with regards to sending a propaganda song. I also don’t remember many people having sympathy for the Russians who got booed for representing their country, and let’s be honest, Russians don’t have democracy so don’t even really have the same influence over their countries decisions that israeli’s do.

There was absolutely no glorification of war crimes whatsoever, the hysterical response from the “fans” and artists is absolutely unreal. The artists had the power to boycott and withdraw and they all chose to perform, very hypocritical of them all really. The sustained bullying campaign of a 20 year old Jewish girl just because she comes from Israel has been really eye opening. Well done for absolutely spoiling Eurovision this year with your unwarranted hysteria. Honey, you don’t give History lessons to me. In my country we also opposed the establishment of a communist dictatorship after overthrowing a fascist one. If you want to cultivate yourself, read a little about the Hot Summer of 1975 in Portugal. I’m old enough to hear the phrase “silent majority” from people like U.S. Senator Jesse Helms, a huge bigot, racist and segregationist.

Honey, noone is giving you history lessons, i was just refering to amazing similiarities between present-day and historical forms of totalitarian “antizionism”. And a small advice, cultivate yourself before telling others to do so. We Czechs had 40 hot summers because of the communist filth. so I know what i am talking about.

The comparison is apt: Russia and Israel have a very deep, dark relationship. Even the Israeli singer this year was born in Russia. You probably don’t want to draw attention to the oligarchs who stole from the collapse of the Soviet Union and who are now settled in Israel. Roman Abramovich, Eugene Shvidler, Mikhail Fridman, Boris Berezovsky, Vladimir Gusinsky, Vadim Moshkovich… the list goes on and on…

Arabs are semites as well, since Israel doesn’t value innocent Arab life and commits war crimes in g4za and steals land in the West Bank, it’s clear they are the anti-semites.

Eurovision was born after World War II and in the middle of the Cold War, its objective was to promote a common European identity, at a time when the continent was seeking to rebuild itself. So from its birth the festival was politicized. “As it appears in its bases even today, each song represents the public television of a country, mind you, not an artist, not even a musical style. If it were a song contest it would be another talent show more, as they exist on so many televisions. Each song represents the public television of each country, and public,… Read more »

If you’re filled with so much hate towards them, you’re clearly blinded and lack the empathy to see the g3n0c1de happening to them. It doesn’t matter if they’re slaughtered because you don’t like them anyway, and openly admit that.
So you can’t openly call this virtue signalling and whitewashing t3rr0r1sts when you don’t like them to begin with.
You don’t recognise the problem because you’re so hate filled.

How about all these fools clamoring for Turkey to return to the contest? Are they familiar with Turkey’s human rights record? Neither Azerbaijan, France or Turkey have a Jewish minority and thus aren’t interesting for antisemites. It’s the same principle as these confused kids never criticising Egypt for keeping the border with Plstine sealed closed, even though literally right next to Rafah and could be used for evacuation or at least humanitarian aid. Not a single word against Egypt comes out of these people’s mouth, because Egyptians aren’t Jews.

It’s worth remembering that as we type about a pop contest, practically no food or aid has entered G a z a for a week. There is a manmade famine there at the moment. A group of settlers called Tzav 9 are currently sitting in front of aid trucks, refusing to allow them to pass. The Israeli police will not move them and the Israeli intelligence services tell them where the trucks are going. They’ve attacked the aid trucks before and scattered the food across the countryside. The truth is that Israel is an outpost for Russia in the Middle East which, for utterly insane theological reasons, has been funded and armed by the West. Everything about the regime, especially under Netanyahu, is straight out of the Russian playbook. I think the West are waking up to that.
