Public spats, on-air booing, contestants concerned for their safety — the reputation of the Eurovision Song Contest has taken a beating over the past week. And much of that stems from the behaviour of the European Broadcasting Union, the very body that’s supposed to protect and promote the competition.
That’s the message we’re getting from Stig Karlsen, the widely respected Head of Delegation for Norway’s broadcaster NRK.
Norway’s Stig Karlsen addresses Eurovision 2024 scandals
Speaking to Wiwibloggs on Thursday morning, Stig encouraged the EBU to communicate with all stakeholders in order to find a way forward. He also explained how damage to the Eurovision brand hurts national selection shows all across Europe. We’re publishing his words in full below.
“There is no doubt that the reputation of the Eurovision Song Contest has been significantly damaged this year, and it is now crucial that the EBU quickly takes action. The EBU needs to stop blaming the delegations and artists for the scandals that surrounded Eurovision 2024, and acknowledge the core problem. They need to be more humble and take responsibility for the damage done. They should return to the office and start communicating with both the broadcasters, the general public and the fans. I believe everyone wants a constructive dialogue, and to find ways to bring the Eurovision Song Contest back on track. We owe it to the millions of people who believe in unity, diversity, peace, love and the celebration of life and music. We owe it to everyone!”
“If the EBU makes wise and necessary moves to secure the values of the concept, then it should indeed be possible to get this situation sorted, and the process of healing can begin.”
“The reputation of Eurovision goes hand in hand with MGP and all the other national finals. What the EBU does now is crucial for the future of Eurovision and the national selections as well. However, they need to act quickly. Time is running out for the broadcasters that conduct national selections. Right now, it’s a tough task to get artists, songwriters, partners, and team members to engage and commit to the project.”
“NRK is holding internal meetings as we speak. The next step will be to carry these discussions over to the EBU.”
Do you agree with Stig’s analysis and suggestions? Do you see a path forward? And how have the controversies been covered in your country? Let us know in the comments box below.
There we are. More concerned with honesty than making oneself look better than one is.
If I were Stig I’d be more concerned about my own delegation’s low placing
So true. This years Eurovision was a big mess. T
Hot take: Mr Karlsen is part of the problem too
OK, so let’s not talk about the delegation & artists.
What about the judges? I thought their job is to be as honest as possible, not political, to vote for vocal abilities, lyrics, etc.
And yet the Nowrian judge declares – he will not vote for Israel no matter what.
Where is WIW TO COVER THAT?
The public is more political than the jury
A case could be made for either to be more political than the other tbf
The jury boycotted Israel and Ukraine and gave few points to Croatia. All this because they wanted Metler to win. The result should be canceled because the competition rules were broken. Wiwibloggs should write about the violation of the competition rules and the open boycott of Israel and Ukraine by the jury. Please cancell the rigged result
Few points to Croatia? The came 3rd with juries with more than 200 points…
Please cancel out this rigged result as one country was disqualified.
For now as it seems for a very minor incident.
This whole contest was the biggest SHEIT show on earth.
And now we get back to our daily news.
Don´t be pathetic please
There’s no moderation on this website? You keep trolls like this Bani person spreading hate and propaganda. Or this anonymous91 guy speaking whatever just to piss off people. Have fun at your KAN fanclub. I thought it’s Eurovision forum
For once this guy utters something agreeable.
F the EBU
EBU has been on contrary too kind. All the artist who have signed that political letter should have been DQ in the first place.
Let’s censor free speech. How democratic of you.
Israelly for sure…
From the Slovenian press release: Television Slovenia is therefore asking the EBU for data on the voting of the Slovenian audience, not just the number of votes, but exact data on how the Slovenian audience voted. The overall result raises some doubts, especially the large number of ‘new’ voters online, which have not been there before. Among other things, Television Slovenia demands more precise explanations from the EBU regarding the exclusion of the Netherlands; reports by some media that technical means were used to replace the actual sound image of what was happening in the hall; on banning the EU… Read more »

You’re wasting you time. We’re living in the Matrix. What our eyes are seeing isn’t true.
According to his lawyer Jan-Åke Fält in Aftonbladet, Joost denies any wrongdoing. This is in contrast to what was resport earlier in the media that he had made an incriminating statement.

* to what was reported earlier
A thing I can say is that I’m not directly living this conflict and the way I live is not impacted. I therefore can’t understand anything. The only thing I know is that I will never support a country that commits a g&nocide in complete impunity. I don’t support any of the two sides tbh. And as it seems it is impossible today to voice an opinion in Europe, I will take the easy road. Do whatever you want with your sh!tty lives but keep it in your country. Keep the blood on your hands.
I basically feel the same and wanted to keep it strictly to my music preferences since it’s supposed to be a music competition. But Eurovision lovers and haters alike proved the opposite. They are two peas in a pod, really. Politically, I mostly support my country not being involved in any war, directly or indirectly. We have enough problems
I more or less agree with you, Tino. And I find it extremely annoying that nowadays some people expect you to choose sides. Almost like in a football game, where you can choose to support one team or the other. I personally don’t support any of the sides in That conflict. The only solution for That conflict is peace talks. War is not the solution. But, in order to find a sustainable solution, both sides would have to respect one another and would have to accept to make concessions. The problem is: in That conflict both sides are so blind… Read more »
“Two sides”
That’s the misconception. It’s billed as the Israel H a m a s War, but most victims would probably disagree with that labelling.
There are several sides. I stand with the civilians on both sides who are the victims of this tragedy. On the one hand we have the descendants of those who were massacred, whose land was stolen and who were locked in an open-air prison over the last 75 years. On the other, we have a population under constant attack by t3rror1sts, whose government is more interested in protecting the crimes of the leader than the lives of the hostages.
I understand your position. The problem is that in the real world everyone ends up suffering the consequences of these conflicts. Even far away, we have to deal with a huge number of refugees and displaced people, radicalized groups and terrorists. And in this particular conflict, we Europeans are to blame. It was the Europeans who were responsible for all of this, from the Holocaust to the disastrous way in which Palestine was partitioned.
This man has no shame of reverting the roles.
France. Man shot by police as he tries to burn down synagogue.
This whole thing is so awful on so many levels.
And may I say the roots of this were plenty in Malmö arena as well as this community right here. I am not joking.
I understand. To varying degrees of alarm. It’s totally possible and valid to criticize Bibi’s policies and actions without stoking hatred, but sadly too many are unable to.
I’d say it’s in behavior of country Israel. I was neutral until i saw what kind of people they are in Malmo
Israel should never have participated. Any country at war whether victim or aggressor should not take part because their very focus is using their propaganda machine which contradicts what the song contest stands for. A lesson taught , I just hope this is brought to the table .
Has anyone saw on YouTube coverage of Eurovision from pro Israel media in US and everywhere else. They are shredding Ireland representative. It’s really hard to watch. I knew she will receive backlash. Also representative of Greece and Netherlands. It’s really hateful, I don’t see any way Israel can participate any more, not even mentioning of winning. Hatred is real y’all
Nevertheless there was also childish behaviour from the contestants against Goland, especially from Satti.
Regardless, i was shocked that Eurovision created such hatred. This year edition is toxic swamp
It’s disgusting the treatment they are getting. Sky News Australia has been the same. They were supposed to just ignore the comments directed to them by the KAN commentators. But they spoke out and apparently shouldn’t have.
Yet if the media was being so hateful towards Eden, they would be labelled as antisemites.
The double standard is glaringly obvious
Bambie for Executive Supervisor
I wouldn’t even say no.
Awful. Bambi is getting it everywhere. Israel, Catholics, Carola. I may not agree with their stance, but they single-handedly picked Ireland from the Eurovision ashes and should be immensely proud. It was inspiring to watch.
I don’t support any hate for anyone. Not for Eden not for Bambi. Do you really think it’s nice to single out one person and ridicule that person. Have you ever been bullied? Do you know that feeling? What can that do to your mental health? I believe deep down even Eden doesn’t support that behaviour, she is beautiful girl and she has her life in front of her. Hate brings nothing but pain
Exactly. The people who claim to fight injustice the loudest didn’t even see Eden as a person. She was nothing but pleasant and I will remember her more fondly than anyone else this year. I also think she deserves to do Eurovision again under more normal circumstances, if she even wants to. Nobody knows what this experience truly did to her.
That’s not true. Many of us have been clear that the problem is the Israeli government. It was also said that Eden per se didn’t misbehave, but other members of the delegation did. If KAN really cared about Eden, they would have withdrawn from the competition rather than exposing her to the tsunami of criticism, but for them it was more important to continue with the charm operation. I’d say it’s another case of a stakeholder not taking the artist’s best interests into account.
Stig should replace Österdahl.
The French HoD, I like her.
I would prefer someone of another geographic area. The Nordics have held the position for a long time.
At this point Israel delegation is the only one not complaining post-Eurovision.
The other contestants saw through Eden Golan. Using hatred and division of other faiths to score points Israel points with Europe’s right wing. No wonder they wanted nothing to do with her.
Ironically, BBC just reported that the Israeli broadcaster KAN complaint they faced “an unprecedented display of hatred.”
Lmao, Cry, cry, baby. I don’t know which is more pathetic, KAN or EBU?
Well, they did face a lot of hatred, nobody can deny that. But while I personally feel that Eden Golan is not to blame for Israel’s war politics, I also wonder: what did they expect? They know how the world views their actions in Gaza at this point in time, and still decided to participate.
I’d say, because it has been more a political mission: Israeli Ynet confirmed that the government organised the promotion, while their mouthpieces then claimed after the reveal of televoting that the “silent” majority of Europe and the world supported Israel. Let alone the original name “October Rain.” So it feels pretty much a blatant propaganda.
On the other hand, their participation may not be that hated. But the propaganda mentioned above, the delegates’ formidable behaviours against the others, and EBU’s shameless double standard much worsened the situation. Many more neutral fans are pushed away and get angry towards them.
That’s a lie.
Oh… Aren’t to they:

The bots are working hard. Downvote extravaganza!
They always come on in the middle of the night, when all of us normal people are sleeping, so they can downvote, and post sh!tyy replies, that we can’t see, to make it look like we’ve been owned.
It’s a lazy tactic
Absolutely mental that Österdahl gets to decide on his own about disqualification and that a delegation can’t even appeal his decision or to court. Participants are completely at the mercy of the whims of one man! “If disqualification of a song/Participating Broadcaster is decided during the Event Weeks (including during the live Shows themselves), the ESC Executive Supervisor, shall be solely competent to pronounce any disqualification falling under the grounds mentioned under Section 2.6.3 (a) (i) and has sole discretion to decide whether or not the Chairman of the Reference Group is to be consulted depending on the circumstances.” “There… Read more »
Where did you get that? Link please.
I do not believe that Osterdahl decided this on his own. Maybe he wasn’t even part of the decision. This was EBU board of directors for sure.
In such a dark year we probably needed a blast of Damdiggida.
nah that sh!t would flop even more…

Lol no the majority of Ireland does not support Israel. Neither in the televote nor in opinion polls.
Random and unrelated question: is there a video of Nemo returning to Switzerland after the victory? (Could not find anything in YouTube)

Thanks!
Better. Nemo is already preparing the opening act of ESC2025. It’s all done. SRG SSR don’t need to worry about anything:

Bonus: if Celine Dion can’t make it, he’s already got that covered.
KING. I truly hope we see many changes and this isn’t just a firework.
When will the EBU come clean and give a full press release concerning the disqualification of Joost Klein?
They have said nothing. It’s scandalous actually.
When? Never willingly. It will have to be ripped out by the delegations.
Man, I love Stig. He always hits a nail on the head when it comes to addressing issues and problems. Probably the best HoD out there

Brilliant! I like you. 🙂
It’s time that the delegations and especially the artists stopt bullying Israel’s contestants.
They should read the room. They’re not welcome while their government is committing g3noc1de.
It’s time the Israel delegation members stop harassing others and film them without consent.
exactly!
It’s time for Israel to sit the contest out for a few years.
Here are my suggestions:
1. Keep any country with an ongoing ICC case against them out of the contest. We do not need glorification of war crimes with music.
2. Assume everyone is innocent unter proven guilty. If they are found guilty later then you can disqualify them later.
3. Give personal space to performers and artists. They are not your slaves EBU
Innocent until proven guilty. Nice sentiment, but do people stick to it? Woody Allen etc.
so innocent until proven guilty doesn’t count for your point 1? Disqualifying later can also have its issues. What if the DQ is the winner and already prepared hosting next year? Also nobody will care if a 2nd or 3rd or 20th place will be disqualified later. The show and the result ended and people will remember it that way. Croatia 1999 is still remembered as 4th, despite Sand’s best efforts to get their points revoked.
I am convinced: If Joost came top 5 and the EBU disqualified him in June, it would have no effect. The Dutch would think “we came top 5” with him.
Who won the jury vote in 2019?
We will never know. Do you?
Sweden!
I think the fandom remembers it as N Macedonia though.
Another sorry mess.
Did you count the San Marino fantasy points? Do they make a difference?
Sweden won the human jurors vote. The Belarus and San Marino fantasy pints tipped it for Macedonia, though. Due to EBU incompetency, the “Belarussian” robot points were awarded backwards with Israel getting the 12. Resulting in Tamara missing out on her fake victory. Luckily, it was restored to her the next day… just too late for television audiences to see.
Aaaah… memories.
points
We are nuts for coming back to this every year and actually expecting a fair voting. I swear I’ll learn,
Wasn’t that Norway? I remember being happy my country Netherlands won, but secretly I liked Keiino way better than Duncan Laurence.
Televote yes, but Sweden/Macedonia topped the jury vote!
The DQ country could still host, just have the winning act banned from performing during the shows, like interval etc.
or they could host in a neutral country like last year.
It could be done.
Everything could be done. But excluding the only reason you’re hosting Eurovision also seems like a rather bad story to tell and not in the spirit of contest. Then again, it might be too late for the spirit anyway.
Agree with all of this.
It’s only logical and really surprised didn’t come from the top.
Takes commentators on an ESC fan site to come up with that.
3 easy fixes for Eurovision
Without wanting to be nitpicky, it’s ICJ. ICJ for countries, ICC for individuals.
Funny how 2 and 1 are actually so very contradictory. You have to find another way to make your exclusion of Jews sound intellectual.
Stig Karlsen might have a point on this, but he’s also the guy who brought in autotune to MGP and did his best to eliminate juries.
If an EBU vacancy does arise, he will NOT be getting a reference from me.
sadly, this is exactly the kind of replacement I expect. But I’m still convinced Martin will survive this and be there for his full tenure. If he hasn’t turned the contest into full playback by then, Stig is the guy for the job. The jury elimination would have my vote but with full playback I won’t be watching anymore so it won’t matter. and he fits the pattern: Swedish-Norwegian-Swedish-Norwegian. After him, Björkman and the robots.
Noel Curran is Irish, and married to Eimear Quinn. The total opposite of autotune, no live instrument etc. I had hope for him, but alas, no more.
Eimer is iconic though.
Hands down best Irish winner.
I love Eimear. Brendan Graham wrote GREAT song. I just wonder would it stand a chance today.
Easily Top 10 with the right performance. It’s a timeless piece in my opinion.
Probably our only winner that still stands up.
1994 still stands up.
(Even though they were sitting down)
God there was a time we where good at this…
Ireland scored higher than Italy this year. Nobody saw that coming a year ago.
True, true.
We’ll see how things go next year though, I won’t shout renaissance just yet 😀
More of a chance than oo aa just a little bit. Secure last place for the UK.
Ooh Aah would have won the 1996 televote had it existed. The Voice finishing around 21st.
Nah. 21st is a huge exaggeration imo. It wouldn’t have done so badly.
Oh, I think it would. The televoters voting for Ireland… again… one year after a three-in-a-row? Highly unlikely. Loreen v Käärijä x 100
1996 year of good memory. Very proud of Lúcia Moniz, singing “My heart has no color”.
And isn’t he like the big boss of Martin too somehow? Nothing came from that guy and should know better than all of us.
*he should know
Right. Somebody had to GIVE that job to Martin.
Ireland gave it to Sweden and said go wild. The irony.
Curran is probably more responsible than Martin for this whole s%!&tshow. His luck is that he is less visible.
Eimear should divorce him.
Karlsen is said to have explained “how damage to the Eurovision brand hurts national selection shows all across Europe”. I believe some people should examine themselves before throwing stones in glass houses. For the second time in four years, Norway just barely qualified for the final, in which we finished in last place, our twelfth out of 61 participations. On average, we have now come last every fifth time we have participated. A record, of course. Not a bad word about Gåte, who gave everything, but had obviously ended up in the wrong festival. The point is that… Read more »
Kato,Great to hear from you so clever and smart words.we are the real fans without any toxic,in our days there were only love.
Best wishes from dudi in Israel
“We owe it to the millions of people who believe in unity, diversity, peace, love and the celebration of life and music”.
The most poignant part of his statement.
Correct and right.
EBU need to address that elephant in the room.
I’d be more impressed if he had made any specific suggestions. I think the jury show should be eliminated. Juries can and should vote on what the rest of us see. It may be technically more difficult to process those scores, but it would mean far less stress on the artists, particularly those in the second semi, not to have to rehearse twice on the Friday.
Removing juries, as long as you have possibility to organise orchestrated political campaigns to get votes (and almost win Eurovision: I am talking about Israel this year) would make Eurovision dissappear. Juries must stay although they are not great either.
But I didn’t say remove juries Aga, just get rid of jury shows.
He has previously campaigned for significantly reducing the power of juries. It was his big bugbear that he brought to last year’s EBU Eurovision discussion meeting.
The jury saved Eurovision this year. I never want to hear about fools asking for its abolition again.
I think people forget about the years where the same countries finished in the top 10 pretty much every year because of the public vote.
I learned long ago never to trust organisations like FIFA, the IOC or the FIA. Somehow, naively, I thought the EBU would be somehow better all of these and would do the right thing when faced with challenging decisions. The fact that FIFA and the FIA kicked Russia out before the EBU did after the invasion Ukraine suggested that the EBU was just another corrupt and rotten international organisations. The last week confirmed it. And now in the aftermath, they’re trying to find someone, anyone, else to point the finger of blame at. Rotten to the core. But don’t worry… Read more »
I am happy that my country doesn’t have to organize this sh!tshöw next year.
I think Finland was incredibly relieved that it didn’t have to host this year.
Yeah, if you want to do your country a favor then the second place was the best one.
Luxembourg sure picked a special year to come back. I wonder if they have buyer’s remorse.
See you in 2055, Lux.
See that, Croatians? You’re in luck! Marko is a hero and you don’t have to deal with collateral damage.
I don’t think the EBU are corrupt like the other organizatiobs you mention. Just incompetent.
Maybe not corrupt, but certainly rotten and awards incompetence.
Sad that the people who are best able for the top jobs rarely get them. This is true in so many fields.
Oh yes, I used to work in banking and constantly saw untalented but well-connected people or constant self-promoters succeed in climbing the ladder.
Aren’t you being a bit naive?
How so?
EBU not being corrupt.
Maybe. Not Sepp Blatter Qatar 2022 levels of corrupt.
Dutch media have been digging in the Eurovision Regulations. Two things that shocked me:
• It is not possible to object to disqualification. Decision is final.
• Martin Österdahl is entitled to decide on disqualification all alone, without having to consult anyone else.
Source: RTL dot NL
Is this really true? He’s basically a dictator then. Not the the interval didn’t exactly make that point anyway.
It’s what RTL is saying. They’re a serious tv network. Here is the article (in Dutch): https://www.rtl.nl/boulevard/entertainment/artikel/5450878/ebu-reglement-eurovisie-songfestival-nederland-bezwaar
I’m surprised but I’m also not surprised.
How can one man’s say carry so much say? In an organisation that represents the broadcasters of Europe, we arts of the Middle East and North Africa? That’s actually baffling.
What!?!?!? Is this true? Do you know where can we find those regulations?
If true, off with his head! That twat must go.
I’ve been scouring the Internet, but can’t find them. Which is a weird and frankly kinda suspicious thing in itself.
Have you tried asking ChatGPT? 🙂
Croatian fans homophobic comments crowned this years controversial contest, I wonder if EBU was blackmailed by CERTAIN company..
I am about to loose interest in the ESC. So I don’t see why artists, songwriter, composer etc. should be interested into the ESC anymore at this point to be honest. So I see Stigs problem to organise an MGP. It’s till late autumn to have all the acts together? So time is ticking for the delegations.
To be fair to the EBU, it was their decision for Israel to compete. Like it or not, all the delegates had to turn up, respect the decision had been made and perform. Or choose not to go. But to hypocritically agree to go, disregard and disrespect the EBU decision and then make a nuisance of themselves (ie Ireland) was deceitful and attention seeking. It was Bambie Thug and the other pronoun pretending cry bullies who caused the toxicity and stress.
“Pronoun pretending” please take your anti lgbtq bullsh*t away from Eurovision.
Eurovision isn’t a gay pride festival. Yes gays love it but they are a tiny part of its viewership. It is a song contest and traditionally speaking a family event. It was inevitable that having so many narcissistic, desperate for attention, uninformed virtue signallers would lead to toxicity. Bambie Thicko talked about peace love and tolerance but demonstrated the most hateful , spiteful and intolerant behaviour there in my opinion. If she didn’t want to perform with Israel then she didnt have to go. End of.
Eurovision would be nothing without its gay fans, so please stop disrespecting us. If you think standing against ge no cide makes you a “narcissistic virtue signaller” than there is something wrong with you. End of.
Gays love it I said that. They don’t own it though and actually this year it lapses too far into the seedier side of gay culture with some of the questionable presentations. They weren’t standing up for anything. They were disrespecring the competition rules and seking attention. It’s called narcissism.
Why do you always have to shoehorn your LGBTQphobia into every subject?
The “seedier side of gay culture” meaning what exactly? Men dancing with other men? Men wearing revealing clothes? Did you complain about Cleo from Poland in 2014? Or any of the scantily clad women that have participated in Eurovision for years (I love them and am not criticising them, but it’s interesting that Eurovision is now a “family show” when it suits people)
You sad little person. How miserable your life must be.
“Gay” and “family” are not mutually exclusive. Do you think gay kids grow up in the jungle like Mowgli?
Yawn
You will receive Bani’s treatment:

The “SiLeNt MaJoRiTy” everyone…
It’s interesting how such a bigoted brain, who uses inflammatory rhetoric towards LGBTQ+ people enjoys Eurovision and commenting on a site like Wiwibloggs (which is predominantly LGBTQ+)
Like what are you hoping to achieve here? Haven’t you got a rally or book burning or something to go to?
Ah was waiting for my stalker to show up. I am not bigoted. I am gay you moron. I am expressing an honest opinion. This year showed some of the worst excesses of gay culture particular in the behaviour of certain delegations.
I don’t stalk you Patrick, but when you just put your stupidity RIGHT THERE, I just can’t help myself.
Eurovision isn’t showing the worst excesses of gay culture, you are, you’re a try hard. Trying to be far right as a homosexual lol you’re one big contradiction. You know the “SiLeNT MaJoRiTy” hate you right?
PLEASE COULD THE MODERATORS INTERVENE TO HAVE THIS PERSON REFRAIN FROM STALKING ME AND HARASSING ME ON THESE FORUMS. THANK YOU

Gay people can also be ignorant morons. Gay people can be homophobic, conservative, bullies, egoists, and just plain stupid.
Equality for all!
You can be bigoted and honest at the same time (you can also be gay and anti lgbtq)
Patrick, do yourself a favor and crawl under the rock you crawled out of. Most of us are not ready to put up with prejudiced remarks towards members of the community.
“acknowledge the core problem”
Speak it out: the inclusion of Israel this year
One thing that says it all: “Eurovision 2024 scandals”, there wasn’t just one, but several.
I’ve lost a lot of interest and respect for the EBU, the contest and many of this year’s contest, they were all talk but NONE of them had the courage of their convictions, most of them just see ESC as a vehicle for exposure and self promotion so why throw that chance away, then again maybe they shouldn’t have been put in a position where they had to speak out, Israel should have been told to sit it out this year.
