Norway’s VG newspaper is reporting that the EBU narrowly avoided what could have been “the Eurovision scandal of all time” thanks to last-minute crisis talks.

According to VG, six countries were poised to withdraw with just 25 minutes left before the grand final. The countries were: Switzerland, Norway, Greece, Portugal, Ireland and the United Kingdom. That would have resulted in a 19-country grand final — and left producers scrambling to fill more than 18 minutes of content.

However, Greece’s broadcaster ERT has now denied that it planned to withdraw. Speaking to the Eurovisionfun web site, ERT said: “We never discussed or considered withdrawing from the competition for any reason. The publication (VG) is incorrect at least when it comes to Greece.”

The countries that threatened to withdraw shared grievances regarding at least two major points: the large-scale security apparatus for Israel and “the behavior of the country’s delegation during the week.”

Israel has previously refuted any wrongdoing, saying that its team faced “unprecedented hatred” because of the fact they were from Israel.

Six countries were set to withdraw from Eurovision final 25 minutes before show

Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet says “the entire final day became one long crisis meeting” for the EBU and host broadcaster SVT.

It’s unclear what was negotiated and why the six countries found participation acceptable in the end.

Magnus Børmark, the guitarist for Norwegian band Gåte, told VG:

“Our common point was that we did not want to participate in Eurovision for it to be used and branded as part of Israel’s war propaganda machine. We participated to create a space where we can unite in music — in a political situation where everyone chooses sides and hates each other.”

Magnus previously told Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten that “withdrawing was on the block until the last second. We eventually had constructive talks with the EBU. Things were just good enough to carry on.”

The “Ulveham” performer said that the tense atmosphere forced artists into a political role, placing an heavy burden on everyone’s shoulders.

Large protests around the city called for the EBU to ban the country from the event. The EBU has consistently said the song contest in a non-political event and a competition between broadcasters and not governments.

“It seemed as if there was one set of rules for Israel, another for the rest,” Magnus said. “There is something wrong when you experience it. The artists should not have to have a crisis meeting with the EBU,” he says.

What’s wrong with you guys?
We’re meant to support Eurovision and what it represents.
Let’s all just unite by music..
We could. Eurofans destroyed the spirit this year, not EBU.
Even artists took advantage of the anti-Israel situation.
I would personally support all broadcasters to participate (including Russia and Belarus), should they adhere to the rules. Let’s *ucking unite by music…

In an ideal world I would agree with you.
But when the bad guys use this as a platform for their own agenda and propaganda (remember the Olympics in Berlin in 1936, Sochi Olympics and so many other examples), the silent majority has to stand up and say enough is enough. That is what really could destroy the ESC.

Most of them signed contracts that were keeping them kinda tied to the hip with the entire process and frankly, if you were in their position, would you be willing to pay the broadcaster a potentially massive fare for breaking contract? + you really gotta get the broadcaster to step out or otherwise they’ll just find a replacement act for anyone who decides to say no to Eurovision even if they could afford to pay the fine. The broadcasters are the problem, not the artists.

Bambie Thug was not even mentioned in this article yet you guys keep talking about them. Why do you continuously single them out? Bambie Thug went to Eurovision because the Irish people voted for their song, Doomsday Blue – that is the “one reason only”. While there, Bambie behaved in an exemplary manner that won many new friends and fans. Bambie Thug brought a creativity that was the highlight of the Eurovision and was seen cheering on and supporting the other contestants who had all become friends in the face of obvious persecution from the delegation of one other country… Read more »

“Our common point was that we did not want to participate in Eurovision for it to be used and branded as part of Israel’s war propaganda machine. We participated to create a space where we can unite in music — in a political situation where everyone chooses sides and hates each other.” Well you did participate even though you said you would withdraw if Israel takes part…same for Finland which has suspiciously been quiet. Anyway, we really deserve to know more about this incident, if true. I don’t think Greece would have withdrawn given how they did not protect Marina… Read more »

Because KAN is a public broadcaster, dependent on a government responsible for war crimes and whose leaders are under investigation by the ICC. George

The Greek public broadcaster doing anything to shut down the expression of an artist’s voice, is kind of of disgusting. I don’t personally agree with Marina’s actions but I’ll defend everybody’s right to be themselves and express their disapproval anyway they want (as long as it’s not harmful to others)
We like to say that the contest is not political, yet we have public broadcasters acting like their governments puppets, across Europe.

Marina was there to represent Greece. She has every right to have an opinion and express it, but it should be on her own time.

George

That’s one way to see things. But what’s exactly the reason not to do it while representing Greece? Are we gonna confuse her own opinion with the whole country of Greece/ Greek government? Cause that seems to be the biggest problem with people disagreeing with her doings. Isn’t it “just an artist” and “not representing her country’s wrongdoings but just herself “. Seems like a double standard to me.

Ern
Ern

Reply to  George

OK, but I’m talking specifically about Greece. The Greek broadcaster is paying for Marina to be there, and she needs to be mindful of that fact when she participates in Eurovision-related events. As far as I know, ERT did not authorize her to speak about Israel/Palestine, so her pretending to fall asleep at that press conference was unprofessional. It made Greece look bad, and likely affected her outcome in the contest.

But you can’t ignore the fact that the juries ranked Israel 12th, which is of course higher than other 14 contestants. Yea, some of them didn’t vote for Israel because it’s Israel. There is one more explanation: maybe they didn’t like the song much, or maybe they did like it, but they thought there are 11 better songs.

It was just songs competing against each other, experiencing new cultures and artists, I never cared about the countries at all. If it was only political, then we would have the same results each year. Of course the songs matter. For example: the top 3 in 2002 were Latvia, Malta, UK and Estonia (joint 3rd position). While in 2003 those countries were all bottom 5.

At the same time we all read and said a lot about neighbouring countries exchanging points. We also said it’s all about sympathy votes, for example Ukraine 2022.

It is crucial to define what is political, and to accept the fact that it will always be part of the show.

On other blogs / forums were the moderators/editor have a positive attitude, or were non-Western people are reacting, the atmosphere is much nicer. If you don’t like a song or staging so much, you don’t mention it, or in a… Read more »

What do you mean? all fans from all across Europe are drama queens, it doesn’t matter where they come from.

No, Ukraine got many positive comments from people in Russia and the same goes for the comments between people from the other countries i mentioned. Much nicer and supportive atmosphere.

This wiwi blog and also certain ESC youtubers like Gabe, United, etc.
cause and thereby attract tension.

Maybe the ones i saw were not the real hardcore eurofans then, but just nice people who liked to discuss the music and songs. But those were mainly from the East part.

So you are saying that the real ESC blogs and fans all have this drama toxic behavior? What a bubble to be in..

There were some ESC youtubers I enjoyed this year.
Creative mature people like music composers, designers, photographer, stage designers, such as camera man and stylist Jan and Eli. Mature, creative people with an open mind.
But also some young people with a mature and sensitive mind.

So people saying and excusing themselves that all fans are toxic drama queens, maybe should come out of their bubble.

The avg Westoid loves westplaining. Darren, for example, an Irish, loves to westplain those who don’t agree with him, and claims to be anti-racist but surely he’s discriminated against Poles, Latvians, Romanians and Lithuanians in Ireland (they complain about Britons doing so to them but they’re no different to Eastern Europeans)

I’ve no issues with Poles, Latvians, Romanians, Lithuanians etc in Ireland lot of Mexicans here too btw those I met where lovely people and never have I discriminated against any of them?
Like, where is your misinformation coming from? Do you suffer from confusion too?

You’ve assumed a lot about me, big accusations without evidence. You don’t know me at all

Something me they were probably coerced or forced not to withdraw by the EBU. I mean, the artists are all under contract so they must have persuade the delegation one way or another before that emergency meeting happened.

The 5 artists were probably threatened with massive lawsuits and fines from the EBU if they chose to withdraw.

Or it was just an irielevant threath again, just like when they wanted to boycot Eurovision months before,
but then they think about the publicity and 100 million viewers and quickly came back.

Just watched a disgusting interview with the Israeli entrant Eden Golan who cheered it was “karma” that Nemo broke his winning trophy after he snubbed her for not responding to her congratulatory message.

Someone should tell Eden Golan that Neemo doesn’t owe her anything. What an entitled Octopus she is.

They need to be gone forever. They have no place in eurovision. Their values are antithetical to what Europe and Eurovision stands for

All the former Israeli contestants do that. Like it’s a right of passage. They shoould all be rounded up and chucked in a cell for war crimes. I’d be happy to throw away the key.

Really praying if I come back to this site next Eurovision season that we’ll have done something about the blatantly NB-phobic comments or the trolls/botting that occurs here. Reading comment sections was my own mistake in the first place, but there could be a community here that is ruined by the worst offenders, and until the Wiwi team does something about it it’s very upsetting to be a part of.
