If you’re a fan of Melodifestivalen, then you’ve probably, at some point, been annoyed that you couldn’t stream your favourite song after hearing it compete in the semi-finals. In the past you could stream the eliminated songs, but not those that had advanced to the final. Well all of that is changing with Melodifestivalen 2025 thanks to new rules unveiled earlier today.

Melodifestivalen 2025 songs will be released the Friday before each semi-final

For Melodifestivalen 2025, each of the six songs in each semi-final will be released on the Friday before the show. That means fans can fall in love with the songs before ever seeing their live staging. If they’re still in love with the songs after the live performance, they can then throw ’em their vote. After the show, fans will no longer have to search for illegal uploads to re-live the songs. They’ll be able to listen legally and without any stress.

Only third-place songs in contention for “finalkvalet” round

Producers are accepting song submissions for Sweden’s biggest TV show between 23 August and 14 September. As ever, thousands of submissions will be culled to just 30 songs, which will be introduced over five shows. The public’s top two favourites from each show will advance to the 12-song grand final.

Those two remaining slots in the final will be filled by a new process. Rather than giving both the third and fourth place acts a second chance of making the final, only songs that finish third in their semi-final will be considered.

At the end of the fifth show, the third-place finisher with the highest score will automatically advance. The public will then vote for their favourite among the remaining four third-place songs and the winner will advance to the final.

What do you think of the new rules? And why do you think they were introduced? Let us know down below…

I rather prefer to skip the semifinal. Rather have four heats with three finalists in each, still 12 songs in final. That would be competetive.
But I guess the record labels have something to say;)

I guess they can’t drop a semi final due to possible contractual obligations for a six episode show.

Anything they do will be pointless until they fix the main issue: 10 composers who keep coming back and recording most of the final songs. All songs look alike, quality is average at best, originality lacks hard, nepotism at its best. BAN THOSE BAD, MONEY HUNGRY, UNORIGINAL COMPOSERS!

They can’t ban anybody on the base that they have several songs, that would be discriminatory and go against the idea that it is about the songs

Instead, you support that production that is discriminatory toward other composors, interesting

And the “leftovers” flogged off to the likes of Malta. I have a horrible feeling these 10 composers will flood us with shouty country and western songs of which there are far too many around just now.

They need to finally start diversifying their songwriters. We don’t need 6 people writing all the songs in the final. Their semi format also sucks. It’s obvious they follow a pattern
1. Opener filler act that gets 3-5 place
2. Comedy act that is filler
3. Indie new artist that NQs
4. Maybe a New artist with a bought song
5. Old/legend act
6. Big returning artist with a pop song

Whether you like it or not Sweden have a good way of producing and selecting quality POP songs. Thats what i look and listen for. What i totally disagree with at the finals the manipulation at the finals of the Swedish producers relating to the running order. Bring back the EBU random draws.

Changes come, but songwriters and producers being mainly the same year to year, has made the overall song quality very average.

If it is about the song then it is about the song . They can’t turn down songs because the writer has three songs

its about the song? since when

i thought it was about which artist got the most connections within SVT?

since Loreen is up most producers’s arses, even more than ABBA

this year should be the year of Dotter or Klara Hammarstrom, and preferably my rich equastrian schlager masked singer queenie Klara, i love equastrian athletes in general, i still think she was robbed in 2022, with that beautiful musical theatre execution of run to the hills

Dotter and Klara Hammarström have had their chances. Dotter is really nothing special. Time for new names.

The whole show seems to go around certain group of people, and it limits any chances for anything new; and like Anonymous91 said, it’s all about connections.

It is about the songs still. It is about finding the song that appeal to all groups that is why broad pop songs usually win.
Of course there are newcomers but it will never be only newcomers, it is not Idol.

With Sweden, it is prop first, song second.

Back in the days it was easier to qualify. Now it’s more easier not to qualify it seems. Which is probably why they keep changing rules, to make qualifying a prestige honour and to ensure top songs in final. Could ne really exciting
