Picture: Ruud Baan for AVROTROS

He has been involved in the Netherlands’ Eurovision efforts for more than two decades and back in May he famously said “F*ck the EBU” to the press. But now Cornald Maas is arguing that the Netherlands should not withdraw from Eurovision 2025.

The Netherlands has been a stable force at Eurovision ever since the very start of the contest. However, ever since the country’s entry was disqualified in May – becoming the first nation ever to face that fate – Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS has been non-committal about whether the country would return to the song contest.

Commentator Cornald Maas has now made up his mind regarding the Netherlands’ participation. He thinks the country should go. In a red carpet interview with Shownieuws, he said:

“I think the best answer is to participate and to cater for a good entry. That’s a better answer than staying at home, sulking, preaching to the choir, adding to your own annoyance for another year while the caravan moves on.”

“I think that you should always take part, because Eurovision isn’t the European Broadcasting Union. That’s what I’m critical about, not about Eurovision itself.”

Earlier this summer, Twan van de Nieuwenhuijzen resigned as AVROTROS’ Head of Delegation after just one year. Before his tenure started, it seemed like he intended to stay on board for several years. In addition, the selection committee disbanded. Unlike in recent years, the broadcaster has not yet announced a submission period or process.

Instead, AVROTROS has remained firm with their demand for changes among the EBU’s top management. A decision about participation is yet to be made.

What do you think? Should the Netherlands take part at Eurovision 2025 in Basel? Do you agree with Cornald Maas’ words?

Yeah but do we want back this country of female abuser apologists?

No, we don’t.

I don’t want them back. Let that spoiled child of a country get no access to our beloved contest. The tr4sh took itself out. Let it be where it is.

You’re full of trash , if The Netherlands wants to participate it’s none of your business. If you don’t like it take a hide. You only focusing on female abuser. Does it ever occur to you that women abuse men too, they are even worse and people don’t talk much about it , if you can get over the subject, I guess you need to go to a shrink for help. You are Sick!

You what I rather save energy and times for something more important, for example cheering and support the Dutch entry if they participate than wasting it to an uneducated person like you. By the way The Netherlands, the Dutchies , AVRO TROS and Joost Klein say hi !

Mansplaining how I must behave…. Take your comment and shove it deep where I think. I may sound dumb to you, but at least I don’t side with violent men threatening women and disminishing the gravity of their acts. Especially the ones who insult Eurovision in their concerts, the one that gave them exposure. But anyway, my full of life parents and I say hello to that lonely man without his. They raised me well to be polite, at least.

I never post here but I can’t ignore this. You can’t just insult someone because he doesn’t have parents like that.

My Dad died when I was 16. I know what it’s like to lose a parent and having people like you boasting about having yours making fun of a man who lost both of his as a teenager? Who do you think you are?

I’m sure your parents would be ashamed if they saw what you post online.

You’re saying I have a sad life yet you’re the one who has nothing better to do than spread hate online to try and annoy people?

If you don’t see the irony in that then I feel very sorry for you.

At least my father is still alive. I don’t need your pity. I have both my parents.

And how ironical. Where were you when thousand of Dutchies here were being pain in 4sses complaining abt the contest and threatening the woman that called out Joost ? Suddenly you wanna wrute when a woman gets mad but not when men had horrible behaviors towards women. Go cry to your dead father.

You are the only one pushing this man versus woman agenda. I’ve not spoken about the whole situation and I’m not going to bother. He was cleared, it’s over. Everyone should just move on.

I called you out because of your disgusting behaviour. It doesn’t matter if you’re a man or a women or any other gender, comments like yours are just not called for in any capacity.

Wiwibloggs really should introduce a way where comments can be reported as some of the comments I’ve seen from Ellen and other people on this site have been nothing short of disgusting.

I want this website to introduce moderation for over a year – even longer now.

But they like interaction and optimising, and ragebaiting helps this a lot.

That’s why they keep problematic users like Anonymous91, Bejba and Ellen. There is a big of moderation though, they did not approve the comments where I criticise Wiwibloggs.

I don’t know what country you’re from, but the chances of you coming from a country more advanced than the Netherlands in terms of just about everything are very slim. Insulting a whole country when the country in question is one of the best in the world in terms of social progress, economic management and ecology makes me laugh out loud. Few countries can claim to do better. Go hide yourself.

Best country my 4ss. A country of abuser apologists, that’s what it is. Just get out of this contest since AVROTROS wanna do its diva and not confirm its participation. We don’t need this toxic Dutch energy. Hopefully this nation will drown and disappear in years. Karma will come

I think they will be there next year, same for Ireland and Iceland. It’s sad if you ask me. I’m a big Eurovision lover but for the good of the contest I would be ready to sacrifice one year if it forces EBU to take real actions. I would have loved to see a lot of countries withdraw for 2025 so that the competition can’t happen… even if for the very first time the final will happen on my birthday :’)

Mr Maas calmed down apparently…. so now it’s let’s go to Eurovision with a good entry and let’s always participate and no more f.ck Ebu… of course Mr Maas, inconstant more?

No, the Dutch delegation was very angry after last year’s dq, but now it’s time to move on. Mr Maas is not the broadcaster so his reaction might be premature, let’s wait for the outcome of the talks between AVRO/TROS and the EBU

Ok they were angry for reasons, but their anger resulted in what so far?
The Netherlands participating in the next Jesc, The Netherlands participating in the next Esc?
In that case what was the aim to insult the Ebu, what was the aim to say we will sue Ebu, if after nothing in fact.
Don’t get me wrong I want The Netherlands to participate absolutely, I love The Netherlands personally, but behaviors like Mr Mass and some others don’t give a nice picture.

Mr Maas was angry, Eurovision is his heart and soul, we all say things we don’t mean when we are angry, people should learn to forgive and forget, especially now we know nothing serious happened.

I don’t like this guy in the slightest, but he does have a point. There’s no point getting all stuck up in the past when the others are clearly moving on. While I think the EBU really needs a big slap in the face for all they’ve done wrong in the 2024 edition, I think the Netherlands withdrawing would have no real effect on the bigger picture. We might as well just stick around and send something good, enjoy the positive vibes of Eurovision, and try our best to improve the situation to the best of our ability. …Maybe with… Read more »

I agree and I want The Netherlands in Esc 2025, but in that case, don’t act childish, don’t insult, don’t say f.ck Ebu publicly if 3 months later you change your mind. Mr Maas has a nerve problem I guess but seriously this thing is becoming ridiculous now. Acting like that he doesn’t do a service to The Netherlands but totally the opposite… sometimes just shut up it’s better.

After Eurovision Joost performed in Sweden again, in the USA, in Canada etc. Currently he’s in Japan and no incidents were reported. The pressure is always very high behind the ESC scenes but this year it was extremely high. Let’s hope it will normalise next year.

He’s not the broadcaster, he works for the broadcaster as a ESC presentator and he’s part of the Dutch selection comittee, but his opinion doesn’t matter that much.
