Dutch Eurovision commentator Cornald Maas recently told Dutch media that he wants the Netherlands at Eurovision 2025.

And we now know that broadcaster AVROTROS has until November 1 to make its final decision about participation.

AVROTROS confirmed that it had been granted an extension to decide by the EBU in a statement sent out on Thursday morning.

“With EBU Deputy Director General and Director of Media Jean Philip De Tender’s visit to AVROTROS, the dialogue with the EBU has started. To give this constructive dialogue a chance to succeed, AVROTROS has requested to postpone the decision to participate. The EBU has granted an extension until November 1, for which we are grateful.”

As you’ll recall, the Dutch are divided over whether the country should participate in Basel following the disqualification of their act Joost Klein on the day of the grand final. In July the broadcaster said that its ongoing issues with the European Broadcasting Union meant there was only a small chance of it participating.

Earlier this summer, Twan van de Nieuwenhuijzen resigned as AVROTROS’ Head of Delegation after just one year. And unlike in recent years, the broadcaster has not yet announced a submission period or selection process for the contest.

Instead, AVROTROS has remained firm with their demand for changes among the EBU’s top management.

no more Just Small, but we need Karen Flowers (Karin Bloemen) in 2025

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XmsErfIcv4

if this isn’t enough reason to take a risk with such a megatalented queen mommy of dutch music, such a great cover of that iconic nelly song she did last night

Karin Bloemen? No, dated and too much drama

Kovacs, a Goldband /Maan combi, Rondé, Sophia Kruithof for instance.

he’s a troll, of course he is interesting in participating, for the sake of the attention it brings him

i know his kind of people 😉

he is not a real dutch musician, unlike other fabulous artists like Karin Bloemen, Flemming, Chef’Special, Blaudzun, Kane, Froukje, Yves Berendse, Ancora, and so on, that list is a very long list, enough to make many competitive national finals tbh

All this mess started by the EBUs double standards. According to the list of participating countries for 2025, nothing will have changed and so we are in for the exact same tense situation again.

I said it in May and I shall say it again now.

EBU needs to grow a big pair of swinging balls and absolutely sort this mess out properly.
I’d rather have Netherlands in next year than the other one.

The EBU has said all a long that Israel is not getting kicked out and it’s as simple as that. No country has threatened withdrawal like the way they did with Russia so people need to just accept it. Either withdraw or stop crying about it.

I think the only way the country is getting excluded if the host city or nation decides that them participating is a big security risk, the host broadcaster refuses to pay for the security needed, or when KAN starts to appear not independent from the government to the extends the EBU can’t ignore it. That last one is probably the easier justification EBU uses why Russia and Belarus are banned, the same concerns are there about KAN, but I cannot have a full opinion about that.

I’m kinda curious how the Netherlands not participating for one year is going to affect the contest. I heard they are the unofficial Big 6.

Jonny

“Unofficial big 6” ? What does that even mean. Till 2013 they had a long run of NQ. And they also failed in 2015 and 2023. Doesn’t look like anything to me.

But after the long NQ- streak a second place, a first place and a (possible) stolen top 5 ranking in 2024, not that bad in comparison with some other countries

In 2000s it was Turkey. That was the first argument Turkey have that they are paying as much as or more than the big 5 so why are they not included. Then it was Russia.

Both affected viewing but not much more

I think I have a theory of why Netherlands is given an extension— I don’t think they have a delegation team, or at least a full one, at this point. If they ever do decide to participate in 2025, they need a lot of time to rebuild it and September 15 is not enough time to create a new team in a short amount of time.

No, we have a different delegation for jesc, also broadcasted on kids channel zapp/npo3, different commentators too, radio dj Bart Arens and one of our recent jesc entries Matheu Hinzen, they are much much better than Cornald, like 10000% better

Different delegations!? You have a different HOD and a different Head of press for the Esc and the Jesc in The Netherlands? I didn’t know
Rules of the Esc:
“A country’s delegation will typically include a Head of Press, the contest participants, the songwriters and composers, backing performers, and the artist’s entourage, and can range from 20 to 50 people depending on the country.”
A delegation is in fact one HOD, one HOP, the artists and the people involved in the act but nobody more.

Arrf it makes 4 months since the last edition and you still can’t say yes or no, really? And 50 days more than the others will change something? Come on… The Ebu representative came to Avotros for what then? Not to discuss? Just to say we give you 1 month and a half more and that’s all and he’s gone? Sure… You had 4 months to discuss and to decide, but what did you do during this time then? And 3 days before the official deadline you wake up, “oh we should discuss now but we need 50 days more… Read more »

You got it all wrong, it was the EBU who refused to talk about the events of ESC 2024, and now they finally realise that they could lose the country that pays the most after the big 5, now they finally start to talk. So yeah makes sense that the EBU had to extent the deadline.

JESC preparations were already started before the end of ESC 2024, so it makes sense to compete.

The Ebu refused to talk?! Since when? During 4 months they said no no we don’t want to discuss with you The Netherlands, you’re too bad? …. And 4 months after the Ebu remembers The Netherlands is the one who pays the most (since when though?) so they make everything to keep The Netherlands now in. That’s a hell of a theory… Well I repeat I want The Netherlands to participate absolutely it’s not my point, but you really think that Esc couldn’t happened without The Netherlands money? And why The Netherlands would pay more than the others, than Sweden… Read more »

The EBU refused to talk since 11th of May and I mean really talk, not those statements saying we did nothing wrong and we stand by our decisions. It says so in the article that the dialogue has just started, so yes 4 months later. In order to leave participation as even an option the EBU simply had to extend their deadline. I didn’t say NL pays the most, I said most after the big five. The fees are based at the principle of the the strongest shoulders carry the most weight, meaning GDP. If you look on the list… Read more »

Ok, it makes more sense than these weird theories at least.
They could have anticipated a bit since 4 months though.
In which way Joost guilty or not, results of the police investigation etc has something to do with The Netherlands participating in 2025? I mean Joost himself doesn’t represent Avotros, he represents himself.
2 ways to see the thing in fact:
Joost took “in hostage” all The Netherlands with his behavior that brought The Netherlands disqualification.
Or The Ebu took “in hostage” The Netherlands by disqualifing Joost, and so deprived an entire country of competition.

Ofcourse they are 3 different entities and ofcourse they interfere with eachother in making the decision about participating. Why? Because they are all Dutch! You clearly have no idea what happened in NL after he was disqualified, the entire nation loved the song, I dare to say even more than Arcade, all generations loved it. So when Joost was disqualified it left everyone with the question why? Literally for weeks media followed everything and came nothing closer to answering this question. Except for statements from the EBU saying it was the right call. And now we know how disproportionate that… Read more »

The EBU cannot and should not ban KAN from the contest. There no “negotiations” needed. AVROTROS has to decide if they can accept this or not. But if the decide to take part next year they should stop making drama.
