The season of national finals is underway – and we’re not just talking about Montenegro, Latvia and Albania. Sweden, host country of Eurovision 2024, is ready to get the glitter ball rolling with perhaps the biggest national final on the continent: Melodifestivalen. It will take place across six cities in February and March 2025.

Among next year’s acts are no less than three former winners in Måns Zelmerlöw (who is also a Eurovision winner), John Lundvik and Arvingarna, as well as two other Melfest winners on the songwriting side in Loreen and Tusse. They join other returning artists such as Klara HammarströmDolly Style and Scarlet as well as 17 debuting artists in the competition.

Two acts will qualify from each heat directly to the Grand Final, while the third placed entry will go into the Final Qualification held right after heat 5. The top 2 of the Final Qualification will also be heading to the Grand Final in Strawberry Arena in Stockholm on 8 March.

The songs will be released in full one day prior to each show on all streaming platforms.

What happened to my favorite crypto gay duos?.…… Samir, Viktor, Marcus, Martinus………… :-(((((( …….. 90 per cent of acts are females, SVT has clearly lost the p?ot to the angry feminist lobby.

I have a feeling that Måns song is gonna be kinda weak. Because the song is written by Sebastian Atas, David Lindgren Zacharias, Ola Svensson and Måns And if you look at their other songs, it’s not any big masterpieces?? Sebastian wrote Innocent Love (Robin Bengtsson) and Awful Liar (Lisa Ajax) David wrote songs that only got to Andra Chansen or songs that qualified through Andra Chansen Ola have competed as a singer 2 times and qualified to the final in 2010. This is the first time he only wrote a song for Melfest but the other songs he have… Read more »

Maybe revolution won’t be as strong as heroes, but we can’t really determine that until the song is officially out in February. Maybe the songwriters you mentioned might get a lucky break and send something good and strong for once, or maybe Mans might be the only thing elevating it.

But Måns didn’t wrote Heroes. The only one of his own songs that he co-wrote was Hope and Glory (2009). Then he also wrote Erik Segerstedt and Tone Damli’s song Hello Goodbye, which competed in 2013

There are certain acts that are pretty much dead weight here and stand no chance on winning: Linnea Henriksson, Albin Johansén ft. Pa, Adrian Macéus, SCHLAGERZ, Nomi Tales, Kaliffa, Erik Segerstedt, Fredrik Lundman, Malou Prytz, Greczula, Annika Wickihalder, Björn Holmgren, Angelino, Dolly Style, KAJ, Ella Tiritiello, AmenA, Andreas Lundstedt, Tennessee Tears, Saga Ludvigsson, Vilhelm Buchaus, Victoria Silvstedt, Arvingarna & Arwin. It’s a long list and some these acts stand a chance on getting into the final so don’t get me wrong, but their main course is to be “Andra Chansen” material. Others have a shot, we all know SVT is… Read more »

I always thought that since SVT gets their money from taxpayers, swedes would like a bit more visibility on why same people are always getting this opportunity on such a big show each year.

Because not everybody is for Melodifestivalen. There are many artists out there who simply we can’t see in Mello because they don’t need it. Can you see Robyn in it? Or Laleh?
There are Melodifestivalen artists and then there are artists. Which is why Linnéa Henriksson is a surprise cause she already is well established.
As for taxpayers, most know what they are getting with these artists. That is what you are paying for

Robyn and Laleh seem like artists who do not want a song from these usual writers, that’s why. For example Smash Into Pieces have very different songs, compared to their Melodifestivalen songs. Problem is that Melodifestivalen simply neglects anything out of the box. If previous fame is the problem, then it really says it all that Melodifestivalen is for those without a real career. Linnéa Henriksson has apeared in Så Mycket Bättre, Best i test, hosted Melodifestivalen and done pretty much all the possible things you can try before accepting that her career never really took off. At this point,… Read more »

Chart success is important, no matter if we’re talking about an artist, movie or a tv show. No success there means usually that it doesn’t attract people, but I’ll wait and see what sort of a success story we’ll see from Linnéa.

Hopefully she’ll do really well and prove me wrong, otherwise you’d be just full of it.

The question is, are they applying those gripes to other countries, or is it only Sweden that gets constantly criticized? It’s not to say there are no legitimate things to critique about, but I think there is a double standard regarding Sweden and other countries. Why does Sweden gets flak for having the same songwriters and recurring artists in melfest year after year, when some other countries do the same, particularly those of smaller populations like Latvia and Malta? Why do fans stan returning former participants in other national finals like with Montenegro recently, but roll their eyes when they… Read more »

Sweden’s population is 10+ million, SVT receives almost 3k entries each year, but same songwriters stay.

Returning artists aren’t the problem, it’s the fact that same songwriters are here constantly.

It eats all of the creativity, when biggest show in a year highlights around 10 people constantly and their interest in music.

Adding this: Latvia’s population is only 1,8 million and they’ve received songs in previous years this much: For 2025: 96 For 2024: 108 For 2023: 121 For 2022: 130 For 2021: Internal selection For 2020: 126 For 2019: 83 If we add all the received songs from previous years (2021 excluded) it’s 664 song over 6 years, if we divide overall number with those years, the median for received songs would be 110,6. Let’s say Sweden receives 2,8k entries as a median, let’s divide that with Latvia’s median (110), and we’ll see how many years it takes Latvia to get… Read more »

Yes. The original people were part of creating the style, outfits etc. Then the inventor of the concept just didged anyone that had a saying in anythi. It should be like Korean or Japanese acts that are just concepts not specific people. The original members were not really informed about this. Some were just kicked out with short notice.

That is what they said. And that might be true. But there is really no reason to motivate a music embargo these days. Record labels and radio stations still hold a lot of influence and they want to play the songs.
As for even up the field , surely this can even it up just as much if everybody is played before the heat .

Why do I get downvotes. The writing camps are no secret. It’s covered in many places. The deadline is after summer every year. Many of the common songwriters write music together with artists selected by the labels. It’s not an official Melodifestivalen thing. But from these camps comes many of the music that is sent in. I don’t know a certain number. I still wonder about the downvotes when just stating a fact

Revolution does not have a broad usage in Swedish language. It’s centred around blood shed like the French or Russian revolution. Someone using the word in Swedish is probably very young or very left leaning. Also how the word is pronounced in Swedish with emphasis on the last vowel makes it a very bad choice for a title. I think we can be certain the title is in English.

Israel probably wouldn’t be allowed to submit a song with this title

Ok cool for Scarlet! At least all the rumors were true. I see familiar names in the authors: Jimmy”joker” has won the race this year with 6 songs, Thomas G:son 5 songs, Jimmy Janson 3 songs, Laurell Barker and Peter Borström 2 songs each. But I see that 2 Melfest winners have joined the line-up as authors too, Tusse is involved in Angelino’s song and surprise! Loreen too is involved in Ella Tiritiello’s song! It’s interesting. Cazzi Opeïa is back too and is involved in Klara’s song only, it’s interesting too. Now the big names, John Lundvik will appear very… Read more »

The order they were announced in was not in running order but in alphabetical. Running order comes later

Yeah you’re right I just realized it.
Usually they give the running order too when they announce the artists no?
So when we will have it this time?

My bad they usually give the running order at the start of January.

As a line up this is utterly dissapointing, former Idol contestants, washed out dansbands and same songwriters. Medicore, dull and uninspiring.

How many unique songwriters do you recon are on those songs? Often Melodifestivalen rejects are sent into other selections of Eurovision for other countries. Not every Swedish songwriter wants their name to be associated with Melodifestivalen. That’s for sure.

I remember when Poets of the Falls were rumored for this. A band like that could have spiced things up. I’m disappointed, Sweden.

Poets of the Fall is a Finnish band, and they’ve been rumoured to participate in UMK, not Melodifestivalen.

I am one of those people who looks forward to returning acts but only when they do not get a good result for the first time and then come back with a better song. (A perfect example is Poli Genova for Bulgaria). She did not qualify for the first time and then came back and ended up 4th. I honestly don’t understand why a previous winner would want to compete and go through that experience one more time. Especially with a bad song (A perfect example is Rybak). I do like it when someone who had an amazing song (or… Read more »

Mans won when spotify wasnt huge like today, so he need a promotion and whats bigger promotion then winning eac. That’s why he is trying to repeat his success now. Same was with Loreen, had to do esc again because her first victory was in a year when social media (spotify and tiktok) couldn’t help her like it can to people of todays esc. Everything is a promotion for them. No one (but crazy Rybak) would come back to esc only for the love they have for esc.

I don’t agree with you and Euphoria was #1 on Spotify globally. Remember hearing her song at random when I was in Germany. Loreen also participated in 2017 and didn’t reach the finals. Charlotte Perelli returned with a self penned song in Swedish. There are hundreds of reasons to return to Melodifestivalen. And the Swedish audience is what this is about. Not every Swedish artist will win ESC. Loreen is an exception.

People join the Melodifestivalen to have fun, to promote their new tour, new album, new style of music, to tell the Swedish audience they are still alive, to enter the Swedish charts and possibly some of them might want to win or even win the ESC. But it’s 30 acts. Some of which will know even in the press conference that they won’t stand a chance of winning. Reaching the Swedish final so you know your song most probably will be a local hit is usually a quite achievable goal. That’s about it. No one is saying Måns is coming… Read more »

Wonder if any of them were turned away and are now on the “open market” for the likes of Malta to name but one.

Cyprus, Malta, Azerbaidjan, Switzerland often rely on Swedish songmakers for their Eurovision songs or for their National Final songs, even Spain make compete Swedish songs in Benidorm Fest. It’s a big market.

On one hand Im very excited for a Måns return but on the hand is like ‘WHY?’. I mean, he already won the whole thing, he’s a legend… what happened to Loreen is not what usually happens to former winners but anyway I want to know what he is bringing back because he has to be very confident to take this risk

Plus, Mans’s music universe is not as strong as Loreen’s one. She has this unique style and way of singing that made the difference. Mans is a great performer but I don’t see a “basic” pop song do the trick twice. And I say this while he was my ultimate favorite back in 2015. I was addicted to “Heroes”.
Maybe he will come back with something completely different.

From the writers there it looks like it is more folk traditional pop than dance pop. But who knows?
The kind of winning like Loreen did is unique even for Mello and I dubt it will repeat
